@Tigress - Loved your prompt. So glad Alistair manned up and made a decision for himself. Gotta love a "hardened" Ali. :)

What I remember about his Awakening comments was about the word budget, only 35,000 words.

[Sorry, I'll catch up on previous pages a little later, I think I missed prompt responses.]

I tend to agree with you Reika. Especially since Alistair makes a comment when you get each item that was Cailan's, but not a peep from him when you get Duncan's sword. I felt that the sword would have made a better gift in a similar fashion that Asala is to Sten. But even more than that, if you do RtO before Redcliffe, there is a disconnect because you do not know about the relationship between the two brothers, so the player could be wondering why all the sudden fascination with Cailan.

As for Awakening, I know it was originally intended for an Orlesain warden, and not the one for Origins. The ability to import the Origins character was added at the end. Otherwise, it was supposed to have that disconnect because the main goal was to highlight a different warden, not the same one.

Yes, here it is from the wiki -

The writing team on Awakening consists of David Gaider, Sheryl Chee, and Ferret A. Baudoin.

I didn't actually think the writing was disjointed in Awakening.  I thought the mechanics were really awkward, and it was rushed out way too quickly.  But there was a lot of the story and the characters that I liked a lot.

edited for screwed up formatting.

edited again - Yes, Storm, I also remember that comment about the word budget.  And I think that's a big part of the problem.  The story and the characters were there, but I was left with the feeling that what we got was more like a skeletal outline of the characters.  I blamed that on the conversation system, but I think the word budget had more to do with it.

I think the problem was that awakening was too short and didn't get nearly as in-depth as we wanted. The writing itself for what it was was fine.

My bad, good point about the budget. It's just that after the initial invasion of Vigil's Keep the entire Awakening left me cold. And most of the side quests reminded me too much of WoW: busywork as cheap filler.

I've never played it with an Orlesian Warden, maybe I'll try that at some point.

I'm not very impressed with Alistair anyway. He's a whining, babbling idiot who can count pretty high.

I've finished Awakening three times, once with an imported character to see what happened with him and Leli, once as an imported Dalish to see Velanna's reaction would be, and once with a fresh Orlesian warden. I have to admit, I actually had fun with the Orlesian warden because I did not have the "missing my friends" feeling to it. And it also made sense to have Oghren start over on approval with the Orlesian warden. Except for the one small part with the imported warden, Oghren acted like they had never met.

Greetings all, :)

Just popped in to put in my 2 coppers' and agree with LadyD - After the lush, full world that Orgins gave us, Awakening just felt rushed. What I especially disliked was that it ended so abruptly.. (spoilers coming up!)

Once you defeated the Mother you just got a few screens of what happened afterwards - no cutscene. No ending scene. Nada. Nicht. Nil. Zippo. But the ultimate insult was the very last one, something to the effect that "One day, your Warden disappeared."

...

Excuse me? Hello? (bangs on the microphone) IS THIS THING ON???

From my rogue's standpoint, ok, he may have disappeared, but not before having some sort of closure with Alistair, It's like they took nothing into consideration of what happened at the end of Origins, other than who would be walking through Vigil's Keep at the beginning of the game - Alistair or Anora.

In another thread, I compared Awakening to a sequel of a motion picture -- entertaining in its own right but nonetheless inferior to the original. I still feel that is so.

Yankee - Hmm, lovely repost. :)

And yeah, it's been awhile since we've had a troll. This one didn't even put any effort into it.

Rage - That does make sense then. Maybe I'll roll up a Leonie to see what it's like. Maybe.

Edit:

@Mage - I've seen better sequels.

I started an Orlesion warden. The combat was more challenging. I didn't take the Genlocks at the begining seriously and they actually knocked me out.

Thanks Yank - love that one

Out of curiousity...isn't Alistair's decision to dump his not-Queen right then after the Landsmeet a decision he makes for himself? And, in-game, becoming his mistress is really a decision you make for him and he allows himself to be talked into?

I have to agree with you in part.  Yes, it is a decision he makes for himself.  What I think people might mean is that in Tigress's story it's a decision he makes for himself to choose something he wants.

It wouldn't make much sence to have the prompts if we were just going to write exactly what is in the game.

I didn't say that you had to stick to what was in game. When tgail said it was nice to see him manning up and changing his mind about dumping her as this was making a decision for himself, I thought that that meant that his initial decision of dumping her was not being seen as a decision he makes himself and, even if people don't like that he does this, I disagree and feel that it is his own decision.

I mean, really. I may or may not be mistaken about what they meant but why in the world would I need to be reminded that prompts can go AU? I'm not stupid. Image IPB

Here is a David Gaider response to things like this *points to above quote*

"Tell you what.

Next time we put in a male lead, we will make sure to make him the
manliest and most stoic creature you could possibly imagine. Just for
you.

He will be so manly he will suck the body hair right off of
John Wayne and make Chuck Norris weep with envy. He will never show a
single emotion, not even at his grandmother's funeral, and will never
utter a single complaint about your actions... he will simply reach out
of the game, slap you across the face and then take over the party.

The
rest of the party won't mind, and neither will you... because he will
be that awesome.  Deep down inside you will resent him, and resent the
fact that every NPC in every town the party enters falls in love with him and not with
you. But that part of you also knows he deserves that love. Even needs it.

I am certain there is not a single fault that you or anyone could find with such a character."

I don't really like that quote. People can not like Alistair (even if they might want to post that elsewhere) or think that he complains or talks too much without automatically wanting him to be the most badass badass that ever lived.

And KoP, you didn't miss the prompt. Regular prompts start up again on the 8th, these are just guest ones.

Re: Awakening ... I think they would've been much better off simply importing any surviving companions from Origins and letting us play a new story.  Trying to acquaint us with a whole new set of companions within the confines of their word budget was a no-win situation.  They were bound to run out of words and leave us feeling unfulfilled.

But again, I guess they were trapped by the multitude of possible endings Origins had.  Nettle would've had to try to get through Awakenings with Oghren and Zevran only.
