Y'know, Strom looks like he could be Alistair's younger brother, Schratty... :)

Happy Friday, all!

Just a quick DA II question - I'm just checking that so far the only bonus pre-order items that are available are the Staff of Parthalan (for signing up to the BioWare newsletter during their summer conference season) and Hindsight (by reading the online comic at the DA II website).

Anyone know of anything else that I may have missed? Thanks!

It's true that some of the elves' condition is enforced by cultural prejudice and by the Chantry.  The crown could begin to alleviate some of this, however.  I would question how good the "civilizing" process is if it only reinforces xenophobic stereotypes.  There are different kinds of advancement.

Sure it can, but this will take time. The big difference is that you don't see any urgency, while I see Ferelden as a backwater that needs to make something of itself asap. In that context of urgency, sacrifices have to be made. Then, when the wellfare of the country as a whole is achieved, can we start focusing on the elves.

Eventually yes, my vision would be a place where it's as much meritocracy as possible regardless of race, creed or class. For the simple reason that I abhor wasted potential. Really the only thing I hate is waste.
Now however, Ferelden can't afford afford this and the sad reality is that the elves now are not crucial to its development, they are too small, show little sign of any particular skills (compare them to the surface dwarves who are master merchants). Regardless of why (and I don't beliebe it has anything to do with racial theories) and what ought to be, this is the reality on the ground and it's something we cannot ignore.

Elves are skilled when given training, have a strong internal social structure, and may have some physical advantages when other factors are equal (nutrition and sanitation).  Not developing them as a resource is foolhardy.

In the long run? Absolutely.
Now? There are more valuable ressources out there to develop and it's easier said then done. Like I said, winners and losers. I'd rather make the elves the losers and not any other group, simply because the elves are the weakest and least crucial for the time being.

Had it been an elven state with human minority, I would advise the very same thing.

Not to get too much into RL history and politics, but the Romans and later the Muslim empires owed some of their prestige and success to appropriating the Greek and Jewish underclasses and using their strengths.

This is different. I know the Islamic example more so I'll focus on it. The Muslims initially were the minority themselves and they couldn't afford to ignore everyone else. The Jews in particular were crucial in helping the Muslims conquer Spain and in manning the garrisons and I presume the bureaucracy (alongside the Christians).
In fact up uhntil the late 8th century, only 15% of the entire Calipahte was Muslim. In Spain, it was around the 10 century that the Muslims became the majority.

Also, the periods of relative tolerance were usually when the Muslim Caliphates / Kingdoms were at the peak of their power. They were wealthy and prosperous and as such had little need to extract ressources in the same urgency as Ferelden, who not only has to reconstruct after the blight but has to stop being a backwater.
That's why I am saying, if Ferelden becomes prosperous as a whole, elven emancipation becomes more likely.

When the Ummayad Caliphate of Al Andalus collapsed, the land that once was the best example of tolerance inh the medieval era also saw the massacre of Jews in Granada. Because of political and economic dynamics (it still remained better than Europe though, mostly because the Muslim lands were more prosperous). It's much easier for people to tolerate others if their bellies are full and if they are educated and if it's within a context of political stability.  Giving rights to people, while very tempting, is not an easy thing to do, especially not in poverty.

And educating people is actually very expensive and I would rather the crown focus on educating the human majority, then the elves. Simply because I would rather have the majority of the population be educated, rather than focus ressources on educating a minority. Can we do both? Only to a certain extent now. Like I said, it's expensive and in the case of limited ressources, we have to set priorities. The elves are not a priority in the larger scheme of things, that being Ferelden's development, which is what a monarch of the country is supposed to care about first and foremost.

Oh sure, they have useless nobility.  But look at what we learn about the noble class of other nations.  50% more uselessness for your sovereign!

But their uselessness is harmless except to themselves.

The genius of the Orlesian system that Drakon put in place is that it forces all the Orlesian nobles to fight each other for the Emperor's favor, while most of them only have titles with no power at all. The banns however do have power and they have armies and they are just as stupid.

So no, Ferelden's system is worse, only becayse its useless nobles actually have power. Orlesian nobles, as petty as they are, are mostly harmless in their pettiness. The system thrives on their infighting and that's the genius of Drakon (comparable to Louix XIV, Richelieu and Mazarin). Ferelden's system does not thrive on the infighting of the banns, which has much larger implications.

You also get the mysterious displaced Prince Sebastian Vael whom otherwise you would have to pay for as DLC.

PS He's hot and has a Scottish accent.:innocent:

What was the name of the perfume in the comercial where they sing, "she can bring home the bacon..."?  Was it called "enjolie"?  The smelly hippies made me think of that.

Because I missed butt shots yesterday:

Thanks, Marie! I read in the FAQ that yes, some of the NPC's will be romanceable in DA II. I'm just hoping that I won't need a mod to romance the one I want this time. :P

@rak - you are correct - the name of the perfume was called "Enjoli" and the commercial jingle went like this:

"'Cause I'm a woman
I can bring home the bacon
Fry it up in a pan
And never let you forget
You're a man."

www.youtube.com/watch  <-- if you want to see it in it's full cheesy glory :)

Coolness, and thanks! I need to read a couple reviews from different people with different perspectives. While some of the new changes and such seem exceptionally nifty, there's alot of other things that don't fill me with such warm and fuzzy feelings.

Though I especially want feedback from anyone who imported a drunk-i-stair save!

@Skadi...It's the Triss hair that will soon be added to the Witcher mod. It's not public yet.
