This. This THIS. Oh Skadi your post is so much full of win. I couldn't agree more. Not to mention that it saves me from writing an essay about the reasons when you have already done that in such an eloquently way. :P

Aww shucks. Thanks! ^_^ It was one of my few recent moments of lucidity, given the season!

@KoP: I was under the impression that the Chevalier are nobility, or at least drawn from the ranks of the nobility, but instead of loyalty to one noble family, or being under the charge of one noble family, they are instead loyal to the imperial court. Sort of like the empress' own pet nobles with teeth, but a sufficient leash that they do not pose problems to her. Also, from what I remember of the Calling (it's been almost a year since read), I got the impression that generally, the aristocracy can and often does exploit their "lessers" whether human or elf, in varying degrees.

I agree, in general, however, about not wanting a totally centralized system or a cradle to grave nanny state, which I find personally repulsive. I would prefer a strong crown/ federal type leadership for dealing with external problems and general internal stability and growth, while having reasonably stable, competant, and somewhat independant provincial/local governments run by officials selected for their competance and ability. And of course, they would need to be people who understand the need for general unity and support for the main government.

As far as the elves go, I disagree with the cheap labor premise, but I can see why you would support such a thing. It is practical enough. However, from my own experience, an unregulated market and exploitation/dependancy on cheap labor has brought benefit to a small minority of people, but problems and a decline in the standard of living to the majority. It certainly has plenty of short term benefits, but long term, proves disasterous. If the elves ever want equality with their fellow Fereldens, they shall have to work hard for it, prove that they do have something to contribute. In order for this to happen, they have to have something to work for, something to look forward to, if not for themselves, then for their children/grandchildren/future posterity. Thus, I would repeal alot of laws restricting them from basic things, like travelling, or where they are permitted to live, or property ownership. I would also enforce existing laws regarding abuse/assault on the elves as I would for the humans. I wouldn't, however, just yet, allow them to have positions of power over humans, as that would be counterproductive, even dangerous, for social order. The opportunity to work towards a better financial future for their posterity, I think, would be enough to start with.

In doing so, I would hopefully create a social climate where ambitous, talented elves could rise from poverty and become useful members of society. Those that don't wish to apply themselves, or wish to have things given to them...well...there's your source of cheap labor. In general, though, like humans, I wish to seperate wheat from chaff, and find those individuals who surpass their fellows in ability and talent, so that they may contribute to, and reap the rewards of a more functional and healthy society.

Sure, it won't be easy or smooth, and you are bound to run into alot of problems with this. Attitudes and perceptions of race are not erased easily or overnight, as we have many real world examples. There will be plenty of people who will actively carry on their old prejudices, or resist the system, and yeah, riots or civil disturbances are almost a given. But I dislike having to periodically purge the alienage, or see potentially bright and talented individuals overlooked and brushed aside for the sake of a very temporary, and fragile social peace.

@ Skadi

Like I said before, using the elves as cheap labour is a short term plan that I do not intend to sustain forever or for a long period of time, because it indeed does have bad consequences. For a simple reason, the elves are a potential market for goods and they can't be good consumers if they don't have money. Cheap labour however will be necessary for Ferelden to recover from the Blight and start its new projects, primarily the navy that I am so adamant about. Then when the economy jump starts, can we focus on improving their lot.

Ideally I would want Ferelden to become what you described. A meritocracy as much as possible, where the skillful, talented and exceptional are harnessed and rewarded for their services adequately, regardless of race, gender, creed.

Ok, now I see what you mean. Yeah, short term, you can't do much except offer them more employment in areas where humans would not be willing to do so for very low wages. If the elves are smart, they will seize upon this and invest in their own future. It will also perhaps provide a good starting point for improved opinions towards elves. if humans see the elves working hard, doing the dirty jobs necessary to rebuild the country, it could be the start on race ralations thawing, and set the pace for the eventual improvement of elf/human relations. Fereldens seem to respect hard work and self-sufficency, and if the elves had the opportunity to do so, even at the bottom of the social ladder, I think fereldens would be more inclined over time to change their views and accept elves as part of general society within a generation or two.

So long as people's sights remain on the long term plan, instead of short term  consessions.

So I have been having fun messing with Alistair.

Damn you for making me love playing an angsty Dalish girl Merilsell, Amera is putting Alistair through the wringer. Although she gets along with Leliana since she is fairly girly and is vain about her hair.

Fun so far.

Aww thank you, Glor ^^ I'm glad you like it. :wizard: As said Lenya isn't a char that appeals to everyone (which is deliberately made this way), but with some patience
you'll discover that there is more than what reaches the eye first. As for the char-interaction, well that is my kind of thing and what is the most blast for me to write. (Which is the reason I have crapload of dialogue in my FF, lol)

Though I should say that BW did an awesome job with the NPC's, so seizing those awesome chars to bring them to their full extent isn't very hard with that great source.

Well, that'll be either future prompt fill, but for once, Lana would've been happy to let someone else plan that nightmare after seeing what Fergus and Oriana went through.

Though she would've insisted on picking out her own dress. Which would've been a nightmare for the planners.

Edit: I meant to say something earlier, but I love the pandastair you did, Cebo.

@Mage - I'm very sorry to hear about your father. I hope everything is alright.

@Sarah - An excellent prompt and even more delightful fill. I like how he's come to grips with being king by focusing on the good things that means, vs simply the bad.

@Reika - The best reason, perhaps? Lovely screen.

@Rage - That was wonderfully funny and I so needed a good laugh today. Thanks.

I felt a little cheap for posting just a screenshot and thought of this scene. So here's my second, more filling, prompt fill.

"It's good to be the king."

A cold rain poured down as the procession approached the ancient castle. Mingled scents of fire, smoke, ash and blood (both human and darkspawn) wafted over them, causing a frown to form on his expression. Only seven months since the Blight ended when Marlana shoved a sword as big as she into the head of the Archdemon.

Only one month since they’d finally gotten to marry.

They’d only just returned from their honeymoon when representatives from Weisshaupt arrived stating that his wife and Queen was to also be the Warden Commander of Ferelden. Neither of them had been surprised at that statement, nor at the “request” that she come out to Amaranthine to assist the Orlesian Wardens in getting settled in.

More importantly to reassure the populace that Orlais had not returned to conquer them.

It wasn’t supposed to be a long trip, maybe a few weeks at the most, but surveying the damage done to Vigil’s Keep, Alistair knew it would be longer than that. That acknowledgement made him hate the fact that the Landsmeet had accepted him as king. He wouldn’t be there for her as he normally was. He’d have to trust the other Wardens to do the protecting.

That trust was sorely missing the more he saw how many human bodies were mixed in with slaughtered genlocks, hurlocks and the odd shriek. His experienced eye caught the patterns and realized something had been leading the darkspawn. The Blight was over dammit.

Wasn’t it?

In grim silence he led a small portion of his guards to the gates where she was waiting for him. The long silver hair was tied back in a braid as it always was when Marlana was ready for war, only it wasn’t silver, but matted almost black from blood. The sapphire eyes held a weary resignation he thought banished since the end of the Blight. The fine silver mail under the stiff black leather of her armor was scarlet from blood as well, and none of the fine silver filigree that decorated the armor could be seen.

Yet the weapons at her back shone brightly under the weak sunlight that came through the thick cloud cover.

“Don’t you dare”, he almost snarled as she started to kneel before him, “I told you before, you’re the absolute last person in this world, or any other, that should kneel before me.”
The glint of humor in her eyes told him that was the reaction she was aiming for with her actions. As he shook his head, he absently took stock of those with her. He recognized Oghren all too well, the young recruit who had been to act as the new Commander’s guide, but he didn’t recognize the tall blond man who looked like he could be another of Maric’s bastards and wearing mage robes.

“Mind telling me who your new friends are, love? Though you don’t need to reintroduce me to Oghren, it hasn’t been that long after all.” He shared a grin with her and the only response from the dwarf was an extremely resonant belch.

“I’m sure you remember Mhairi, the poor soul who got assigned to me as my escort.”

To Alistair’s annoyance the woman bowed and seemed too in awe to speak clearly. It was the armor, he knew it. He’d argued over being a bright and shiny target, but he’d been talked into accepting the monstrosity. Granted it was fine armor… He resolved to get it painted black or something when he found a blacksmith, since he was king, he must have some say in how his armor appeared.

The glint was back in Lana’s eyes, she probably had a good idea of what was going in his mind at that moment. He remembered how she had fallen over laughing the first time she saw him in the ridiculous getup.

As always, she had excellent control over the tone of her voice so that none of the dark humor that shone in her eyes could be heard as she softly introduced the man that looked like a brother more so than Cailan. “This is Anders. A mage that I met while –“

“A mage?! No! He’s a murderer and maleificar!” Ah, and the crazy just showed up on cue. He’d wondered why the templar had wanted to join his entourage to the Keep, and since he had no reason not to, he allowed it. He debated taking a step back as Lana’s eyes visibly chilled and narrowed, but realized that it wasn’t a good idea for two reasons. First because it wouldn’t look kingly, and the second, and far more important, reason was that it might set off Lana even more so. He knew that look and the mood that caused it.

“A maleficar…” she said musingly as Anders visibly tried not to fidget. The mage must have Maric in him somewhere as he said, “Oh come off it, Rylock. You and I both know if you take me back to the Tower I’ll just escape for the eighth time.”

The crazy look changed to just plain mean, “Oh, you’re not being imprisoned again, Anders. This time I’m going to make sure you hang.”

At that point Alistair was too busy watching his wife. He knew what her answer was going to be and after what they found when putting down Uldred’s rebellion… He agreed. Catching her eyes, he gave her a subtle nod. The thoughtful expression shifted to the wicked glee he knew and loved when she was about to make someone she didn’t like pay for it.

Marlana spoke calmly and clearly in a voice that carried over everything else, “I invoke the Right of Conscription and take Anders to join the Grey Wardens.”

Silence descended abruptly as Anders stared at her terrified hazel eyes and Rylock snarled. “You can’t do that.”

“Oh, but she can”, came Alistair’s smiling response, “As Maric and Cailan did before, I renewed the treaties with the Grey Wardens, including their Right of Conscription.”

He left out the fact that he and Lana had made that agreement in all of five minutes while doing other paperwork. Nor the fact the two of them laughed at how official they made it sound too, then celebrated with a glass of wine before going on to more mundane matters.

Rylock stood there sputtering then stomped off muttering that it wasn’t the last they were going to hear about this.

Lana watched the templar and shook her head, “Well, I hope that won’t cause you too many troubles with the Chantry.”

“They won’t, because if they do, I’ll let you deal with them.”

She grinned, “As Queen or Warden Commander?”

“Yes?” They both laughed, then she turned somewhat serious, “Let’s go inside, we’ve stood out in this muck long enough. I’m sure there’s a room that’s big enough that isn’t decorated with dead darkspawn that we can all fit in.”

Smiling, Alistair offered her his arm, “Excellent idea as always, my dear.”
As Lana slid her arm through his, and Alistair knew his armorer was going to have a fit over the muck transferring from her armor to his, he thought about Rylock’s expression at him backing up his wife and mentally grinned. Sometimes it really was good to be the king.

Prompt - It's good to be the king.

“Are you done in there yet?” Aubrianna called out from the bedroom.

“Just about, my love,” replied Alistair from the bathroom, submersed in the tub.

Aubrianna waited a few moments longer, but all that greeted her from the adjoining door was the sound her husband’s off-key humming and splashing water. Finally she gave up.

“I’m hungry. I’m heading down to breakfast. Now.”

No response. She sighed and walked out of the room.

--

She was almost done with her second cup of tea, the meal long over, when the odors wafted into the room. It smelled as if someone had cut every flower in the garden and deposited them in the hall just outside the dining room. The scent was so overpowering it made her nauseous.

Alistair entered the room and her eyes grew wide in shock as she realized that horrid smell was coming from him! He approached her chair, leaning down for a kiss and it took everything she had not to gag.

“Maker’s Breath!” she exclaimed. “What on earth have you gotten into?”

Alistair’s eyes twinkled. “Ah, so you noticed, did you? You like?”

“Like?!?” she exclaimed. “Perhaps if one were outside, one might appreciate it. But after having just eaten –“

“Excellent idea!” he said, interrupting her. “Outside in the elements is exactly where I need to be, for a proper test. Come!” he ordered, grabbing her hand and leading her out the dining room door towards the front hall.

“Alistair Theirin! What, by the Maker’s Hand, are you doing?” she asked, barely able to keep up as he led her out onto the front steps.

But he was already down the steps, clearly on a mission that only he was privy to. He headed down the front path, turning this way and that, grinning like a boy. At least the smell was being carried downwind, was Aubrianna’s only thought as she watched her husband, an ever deepening frown settling on her face.

Finally, he seemed to have had enough and made his way back to her side, still grinning from ear to ear.

“It works! This stuff is amazing! It’s good to be the king! I never had stuff like this in the Chantry!” he exclaimed.

“What stuff?”

“There’s one for body, one for split ends, one to keep frizziness at bay, and even one that holds everything in place,” he said, ticking off the list on his fingers.

“Hair products? Hair products!?!” she yelled, her face red with fury. “You’re talking about hair products??”

“Uh-huh! And they’re all amazing! They work! Look, not a hair out of place!” he exclaimed, tilting his overly fragrant hair into her face.

She coughed, the overwhelming scent stifling her. She pushed him away and fanned herself until she was able to breathe. “Just how much of this stuff did you use?”

“Oh, not much. I just tried a dab of everything.”

Aubrianna's anger fled and she couldn’t help but laugh, thinking of the dozen or so bottles of hair care products sitting in their bathroom, knowing that now, each and everyone of them were gracing her husband’s head.

@Reika - Loved how you showed us Lana putting Rylock in her place. I could just see Alistair smugly looking on, thinking "Yep, that's MY wife, thank you very much."

And yes, Alistair is in for a very rude awakening when he's barred from their bed.

@Sky - Yeah, his hair obsession is a favorite topic of mine and I can see him standing in front of a mirror, preening for hours, admiring how good his hair looks thanks to the royal barber (and a few hair products LOL).
