My dad can kick my ass at any RPG.

He did play SC2 and found it a decent challenge then moved back to playing Empire Total War.

heh I am turning into a clean version of this guy.

I'm in my mid 30's, had a coworker who is around my age that obsesses over that series and tried to get me to read because she knows I like sci-fi and fantasy. Um, yeah, decently written sci-fi and fantasy. That kind of stuff would've made me turn up my nose when I was in my teens.

Sadly that same co-worker of mine did the same to me when she saw me reading Game of Thrones in the lunch room.  She thinks I'm insane that the book I was reading was so thick with very little printed letters. Image IPB

Edit: Heya, Storm!  I did another Pandastair drawing, in case you're interested Image IPB

Playing catch-up here. I have quite a circle of friends who game, and we all come different walks of life, and all in our late 30's to early 40's. I started with fps games because they were fun to play in a group, and still are when as a group. But games like DAO drew me in because they are like an interactive movie, where my pc is the main character driving the plot and the story. Sure there is a set story, but that is what draws me to it. The story, and how much you as a player controsl it. Where it leads, what outcome you can have, and I now find myself bored with the fps games because of the lack of story. And sad to say, but DAO has a much more diverse, indepth, and rich storyline than 90% of the movies coming out of Hollywood today. I'll play these games and have a much more fullfilling time than shelling out $10 at a time to see movies in the theatre that leave me feeling like I just wasted my money and time.

Lol, I play videogames for 20 years now. And I will always play games. In fact, they have to pry the controller out of my cold, wrinkled, dead hands if they want me to stop playing,

Oooh, ouch. I couldn't get past the third book of the series, but I can feel your pain with comments like that. I've gotten them all too often with assorted books. I can only imagine what some of my coworkers would say if they found out about my fanfiction.

Its funny, there was a former coworker of mine who was a total fuddy duddy, yet oddly enough she was my biggest support about playing WoW at the time. "So let me get this straight, you paid $40 for the initial game, $40 for the add on, then $15 a month. That's a pretty good deal when I think about what some of my kids have dropped barhopping."

Wait, he doesn't normally do the head exploding convo if you wait? Maggie got that line, and replied she felt the same way.

He does.  But, if you ask him first you get some really cute lines, one of which is something like, "I should just stop talking now."  Then, once he reaches love you still get the exploding head convo, with the slight change of him saying, "You're the first woman I've ever spent the night with and if I have my way, you'll be the last."

Total sweetness!

It's pretty funny.  I tell them it's fine if they like, but they can't tell me that it's good.  And I've read the books.  I said if I'm gonna badmouth them, I had better read them.  So I know what I'm talking about and force them to back things up with exampled from the book.  hehe

And that's the same teacher who when I said I went hiking in Acadia, looked at me and said, "You?  Hiking?"

Like, woman!  What do you want?  I can't play video games and I can't go hiking?

@Meri - hehe, that's quite an image there. ;)

@Giggles - That would be hysterical to see!

Fortunately my mother doesn't make comments about me playing video games. The one time I asked her why she said 'I can't say anything, it was my fault for getting you that stupid Atari when you were little." *shifty eyes* "And I'm not sure who had more fun with it. You or me."

Oh no! Thirty? That means... I just turned 31 (seriously, I still can't believe it). Does this mean I have to get rid of all my games? O_O

I play all sorts of video games, from Halo to COD to RPGs (I also do tabletop stuff from Magic the Gathering to pen and paper D&D) and they've all got their own niches. I'm a good shooter (third and first person) player and shooters do have their appeal. But I preferred RPGs and action-adventure (Assassin's Creed, really) games for the big differences they had from shooters, especially in ways you could fight your enemies without having to use guns if you didn't want to. I loved that about the first Mass Effect. I loved that you could play an Adept and go through almost the entire campaign without firing a gun if you didn't want to. Add in the fantastic dialogue/storyline things you could pull off (Renegade Triple-Cross on Port Hanshan on Noveria? Hell, yes.) and it was like gaming nirvana. Were there things in ME that didn't work well or were broken? Yes, of course, it wasn't perfect. But it was still awesome. And the Citadel the first time is pretty damn boring.

So I was beyond excited when ME2 came out. Lo and behold, I find out that ME2 was very much a third-person shooter instead of the action-RPG that had been ME1. There's enough third-person shooters out there. There didn't need to be another one. Don't get me wrong, I did love ME2. Just... not as much as the first. I couldn't be that awesome all-powerful Adept anymore, that could just toss a Colossus off a Prothean bridge and LOLOL my way around after. I couldn't tool around a previously unexplored planet in a vehicle with crappy controls anymore. And then, what the hell? Why are Renegades total jerks now? You didn't side with the bad guys (usually) in the first game as a Renegade. Instead, you tended to kill first and ask questions later. Or kill, kill some more, and then ask questions of whoever was left alive. But in the second one... yeah. Not like that anymore. More often than not, you ended up siding with bad guys instead of just being badass.

Anyway, I'll shut up about ME. I love DAO for the reasons I loved ME. You can do so much that isn't all the typical fare. There's great characters, a great story, a crapton of different ways for stories and dialogues to play out. Since I play on the console, the combat kind of blows, and I do wish I had the PC to run it. So while I am excited for DA2, I am trying not to get my hopes up like I did for ME2. I think DA2 might fare better because the main character won't be one that took me through the first game. It's another story told in the same world as the first story, in a sense, and in a way, would seem more acceptable to be told in a different way, I guess.

I will also be sad about no Alistair/Steve Valentine and no Morrigan/Claudia Black.

@ Rage - That is the exact same reason why I love RPG's...well...good RPG's.  And DAO follows that category.  It's like you very own personal interactive movie/book.  And totally agree about movies these days - I would much rather drop a $50-$60 for a game I will enjoy and continously play in the long run than drop $10 plus (w/ snacks) for a lousy movie.

To be truthful, I've only started playing games just  near the end of my fourth year in uni.  Wasn't very privilege to own a console growing up in a single-earner household.  But, like you I started out with fps and got easily bored with it for the lack of story.  It's only recently that I got into rpg's since an ex introduced me to ME1.

@ Reika - You should let that co-worker read your FF Image IPB  And thank you for the comment on my dA page Image IPB

@ Meri - Lmao!  My exact sentiment!  I'm 28 and will be 29 this April and I don't see myself at all giving up on games.  If I had a choice I would be burried with my PC Image IPB

@ LadyD - I salute you for reading that series.  And double salute for challenging those kids.  I seriously wish I had a teacher who did the same.  You people are a rare gem these days.  And I lied - triple salute for hiking Image IPB

@ Storm - Haha!  Thank you! And you're welcome.  I'm glad you enjoyed that. Image IPB  I'm seriously thinking of starting a series for Pandastair and I have you to thank for initiating that inspiration.

I am 29 and holding, dare I say, I am older than probably all of you on this forum and I love the game. I love rpgs and I'm an author of science fiction. My close friend is 56 and she loves the game and she has a male friend who is 64 and is buying the game. The rpg gaming crowd is getting older and more mature. I played ME2 four times and haven't played it since. I guess I will before ME3 comes out, but I prefer Dragon Age.

BTW, my hubby is 52 and he plays rts games all day.  Loves them.  My son will be 15 in March and we discuss DA and ME all the times but then again we both love Green Day, Train, The Fray, etc and we both love the same rpgs.  We pre-ordered 2 copies of DA2.

Just ended Awakening!! Yaaaaay!!! I love DA:O for many of the reason's you wonderful people love it. I really don't know any game that will ever top this in my opinion. I really get annoyed with people who say that vg are for children. To each it's own, I feel. To rain on my parade. I forget who said that they were huge boardgame players at one point.... I LOVE BOARDGAMES!! I can find noone else in the world who wants to play with me because they feel that they are boring. : (

@Gigglees: Anyway, I hope that DA:2 does not end up some boob-tacular game that is oversimplyfied. My expectations are high.

I wish I could discuss ME and DA with MY parents :o
I feel so young, I'm only 20. So I don't have any problems explaining my RPG addiction. It's like reading a good book!

People are so judgemental, it's because they don't know the goodness that is Alistair:wub:

Just wanted to say: I'm a bad girl.

Sixth Level of Hell - The City of Dis

You approach Satan's wretched city where you behold a wide plain surrounded by iron walls. Before you are fields full of distress and torment terrible. Burning tombs are littered about the landscape. Inside these flaming sepulchers suffer the heretics, failing to believe in God and the afterlife, who make themselves audible by doleful sighs. You will join the wicked that lie here, and will be offered no respite. The three infernal Furies stained with blood, with limbs of women and hair of serpents, dwell in this circle of Hell.

If this sounds judgemental I apologize, but the Desire Demons creep me out. There's just something about near naked purple women with tails, horns, and flaming purple hair that makes me a bit tetchy.
