Alistair Week 8 Prompt Challenge: Mother

Now...it doesn't have to be the obvious *looks at the direction of Fiona supporters* It can be anything from motherhood to something completely out there like, the Reverend Mother. So, put those thinking caps on people. Chop chop!

@Hugs KoP again* I'm so sorry you're having to go through this. Everything you hear about breakups and how they're "good for you" sound so cliché at the time, but I will say this anyway and maybe you'll remember it someday. Even though it hurts like hell now, it will make the relationship that finally works that much more cherished because you'll know how fragile they can be and how precious it is once you finally get it right.

@Sleeping - Excellent fill for that guest prompt!

LadyD, I'm not gonna limit your creativity here. If you feel that you can produce a stronger piece with the Fiona idea, then by all means do it! And that's directed at everyone else as well.

Prompt: Mother ( probably not want the OP wanted but this what came to my head )

Alistair paced around the room as Fergus and Teagan played cards. Suddenly the door opened and Leliana came in smiling.
“Is she alright?”
“Elissa is fine Alistair. Come see your children.”
Alistair looked at Fergus and Teagan then back at Leliana.
“Children?” He gulped.
“You have a son and a daughter.”
“Twins?” Alistair suddenly felt lightheaded. Teagan and Fergus rushed to his side to keep him steady.
“Twins.”
Alistair still remembered the shock he felt when Elissa told him she was expecting. It was supposed to be difficult for a Warden to conceive and now the Maker has blessed him with not one but two children.
“Congratulations Brother!” Fergus said as he embraced Alistair.
“This is wonderful news!” Teagan hugged Alistar. “I shall get the announcement out at once.”
“Thank you, Teagan.” Alistair said as Leliana took his hand and led him to the room.
Elissa was sitting up in bed holding a baby in her arms. Wynne was holding the other baby.
“So tell me Leliana did Alistair faint?”
“He almost did.” Leliana laughed.
Alistair rushed to her side and kissed her. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I knew it would make you nervous and worry and when that happens, you tend to babble your Majesty.” Elissa smiled.
Alistair laughed. She was right. He was a nervous wreck then they had married and practically tripped over dress.
“Come hold your son.” Wynne handed him the bundle that felt warm and wiggled in his arms. He looked at the small face gazing up at him and marveled to see he had his eyes.
“Duncan. Duncan Theirin. But what about our daughter?” Alistair reached over and touched the face of his little girl. “What shall we call her?”
“I already thought of that. I wanted a strong name for her so I decided to combine two names after my mother and Kallian.”
Alistair’s eyes widened with surprise.
"Why look so surprised? Did you think I was going to forget Kallian? She saved me from that dungeon cell Alistair. You both did."
"I don't know what to say."

“Alistair, our daughter’s name is Kalielle. Kalielle Theirin.”
“That is a beautiful name.” Alistair wiped the tears from eyes. “Duncan and Kalielle.”
“Lets leave the parents alone for a bit.” Wynne took Leliana’s hand and followed the physician out the door.
The sound of a bell broke the silence.
“What’s that?”
“I think that’s part of the birth announcement.” He smiled. “You do realize once you recover, we’ll have to make an appearance on the balcony."
"I look forward to it. I...never thought I would be a mother after what happened to me."
"And I never thought I'd be a father," Alistair kissed her cheek as he got in bed beside her.

Courage Under Fire



Pinned down. That was the best way to describe it. Alistair looked ahead to the hillside where a small group of maybe twenty Dalish warriors hid behind makeshift barricades as darkspawn attacked them wave after wave. Alistair, Dan, Leliana, and Morrigan had been travelling to the nearby village to get supplies when they came across the battle. Amongst the twenty Dalish were perhaps another dozen who had already fallen in the battle, their bodies strewn across the hillside where they had been killed by the attacking horde. Perhaps a hundred darkspawn littered the surrounding area.

"We need to help them," whispered Dan. "If we can get to that outcropping over there, Leliana and I can use our bows to get the darkspawn in a crossfire. Once they take cover, then you and I, Alistair, can outflank them."

Alistair looked at his friend and nodded agreement. Leliana also nodded never taking her eyes off the battle ahead. It was Morrigan who surprised them.

"We should leave here quickly. There are too many, and we have more pressing concerns."

" You cannot seriously suggest we leave them there to be overwhelmed?" Leliana looked at Morrigan with disgust.

"Better to let them handle their own affairs, we have to fight a whole blight, not this little rabble of darkspawn. We waste our time and resources to help a small group of elves who are clearly doomed."

"Then leave, Morrigan. I for one am not..." Leliana trailed as Dan grabbed her arm and pulled her with him as he began to sneak away from their small area of cover. The two lovers began their trek across a small ditch which provided cover from the darkspawn and led straight to the outcropping Dan had mentioned earlier. It took them only a couple of minutes, but in that time another two Dalish fell to darkspawn arrows. They set up their position for firing their bows into the horde, and waved to their companions on the other side of the small valley.

"Ok, Morrigan, they are set. It's perhaps four hundred yards to the other side. Can you cast spells that far away?"

"Alistair, this is foolish. Why should we die here defending a handful of Dalish..."

"Because we must!" He glared at her. "Those elves are our allies, and we need all of them we can save. Why are you so afraid to get into the battle?"

"It is not fear, Alistair, but practicality. Some sacrifices must be made. This small number of elves is a distraction we do not need, and time wasted we do not have."

"Look at them! Look! They show courage and determination even under impossible odds of survival. They could run, but they do not. They stay and fight here and now...and I will NOT abandon them, and neither will you."

"Fine, have it your way then. What would you have me do?"

Alistair gave Morrigan her commands, and she cast her cone of cold spells on the nearest darkspawn. At the same time Dan and Leliana began raining arrows down upon the bulk of the darkspawn army cutting their numbers in half. The Dalish, seeing their unexpected reinforcements act, came out from behind their barricades and made a final frontal assault of the darkspawn. When Dan ran out of arrows, he withdrew his sword and dagger and attacked the darkspawn from near their rear. Seeing Dan, Alistair made a similar attack with his sword and shield from the opposite side. Hacking and slashing their way through the darkspawn, they met in the middle with the remaining Dalish.

The warriors greeted each other in the midst of darkspawn bodies. Plans were made, and the parties departed. Leliana returned to Dan's side to dress his wounds, and Alistair returned to Morrigan to make sure she was unharmed.

"Are you all right?" he asked her.

"I am fine. You, however, have been wounded. Let me help you with that." She tended Alistair's wounds, and much to his surprise was very good at it. She began applied her healing magic to Alistair's shoulder.

"Do you still think this was a waste of time, Morrigan?"

"Perhaps. But what is done is done," she stated firmly as she continued working on his shoulder.

"Well, that's good to know."

"And you were quite courageous there. I have to admit I was impressed. I did not think it in you."

"What? After all we have been through?"

"Oh, you are quite a capable warrior, Alistair. But to talk to me the way you did, I did not imagine it from you. I must admit...I respect you for it."

Alistair turned to stare at her causing her to momentarily stop the healing spell. "You...respect...me?"

"Yes, I do," she said turning his head back around to resume her tending to his shoulder. "But know this, Alistair, that I will not admit it to anyone else. Just know that I respect you. That does not mean I like you, or that we are even becoming friends. But I do respect you."

Leliana and Dan returned to them while Morrigan was finishing her healing of Alistair.

"So, are we ready to head out?" asked Dan.

"I think so...and funny thing. Morrigan just...OW!"

"Just finished bandaging and healing this fool's wounds. Now let us make haste. We are losing daylight."

"Very well," Dan said as the small party resumed their journey to the nearby village. Alistair looked in Morrigan's direction once in a while to see if she was watching him, but she never did. He chuckled once causing her to glare at him, but otherwise they were back to normal. But something had changed. She only called him fool once.
