We are not bickering, we are discussing.
I would think that's the most flattering thing you can do for a character. Discuss him.

I should have includes a winky face or a smile--and it was mostly because the thread was just in a two day discussion about Morrigan and the nature of love. Not to worry. KoP likes you. I'm sure it will be fine. ;)

Yes, but I don't happen to dislike anyone here.

Having done some stupid and self destructive things in the past and around Alistair's age no less, I can easily understand the way he reacted to different things. I'm not saying what he did is right, but sometimes when you're in so much pain its incredibly hard to see the big picture.

Not disputing this and I understand.

However, I still blame him. Despite everything, he is an adult responsable for his actions and I hold him responsable to keep his feelings in check. If his failure to do so did not back me into a corner, I wouldn't have cared much. Sadly, it did.

I respectfully (cuz you're awesome) disagree with part of what you said. Just because we need to be rational in moments of responsibility doesn't make it so. I firmly believe that if Alistair had faced him as nothing more than traitor, and not someone who had turned his back on Duncan and Calian, then he would have made the right decision, albeit hesitantly. Which was my reason for stating that caring for someone throws all the rules out the window.

Some people are stronger than others. Some let their 'hearts' lead them and others follow their mind. I'm one of the former. You're the latter, it seems. Which I think the world is better off that way. A good balance to have. But like I said, I see both sides. He didn't make the right decision but he's only human, wearing his emotions too close to the surface. It's easy to say we'd do this or that but the choice comes from whatever emotions we feel at that moment and how tight of a rein we have on them.

Which is why I only spared Loghain once. Less drama. xD

I'm glad that everyone helped you see him in a different way. I probably need to read Loghain's thread so I can not despise him so much. >>

We'll have to agree to disagree on that then. It really isn't easy to get past certain things.

And that is something I fundamentally disagree with. Or something I don't find desirable.
Yes it is difficult to look past those things. But those who have responsability have to do it and if they don't, they have to be held responsable.

Of course he is human and yes we all make mistakes. That does not reduce our responsability.
I hold him responsable for it. But like I said, if his behaviour did not back me into a corner, I wouldn't have cared much. But as a commander watching a subordinate desert in front of everyone, I had to hold him responsable and act. Unfortunately there is no option to put him in prison and wait till he calms down.

I completely agree with you there. He should have been held accountable for desertion. Then again, him falling into despair and becoming a wandering drunk seems like a punishment all it's own. ...............If you don't lop off his head, KoP. xDD

I have never had him executed. I can't do that. Not because he's my favorite character but because of how I can sympathize with what he's feeling. I lost my Dad at age 13 to cancer and trying to imagine him dying as a result of someone's political or whatever motives....I wouldn't be rational, either. I remember cursing God and blaming him and it took time for me to see things any other way. It's all about pain...that and I was young but I felt betrayed in my own way.

Which is why I see both sides. I didn't learn till later but the damage had been done by then and I had to make my amends. Alistair wasn't given a chance to do the same. I think he would have if it had been real life, given his character. It all depends on how each individual has lived their life and what they've experienced.

I'd make a sucky Commander. Lol

I have noticed that it's quite common (for Alistiar and for other fictional characters) for someone to complain about something that they view as stupid and irresponsible and others to say that it was a human thing to do. What does that mean, anyway? Anything humans do is a human thing to do. Does that make everything any human has ever done okay? Yes, it's nice when fictional characters can behave in a realistic manner but that shouldn't be the end-all, be-all. IRL people aren't let off the hook for what they've done because it was a very human reaction. I don't think someone's actions being 'human', IRL or otherwise, gives them a free pass.

Like I said, If I was given the option to put him in prison and attempt to reason with him, I would have. I did not have him executed because I hated him, or because I was even angry at him. But because what he was doing was threatening to me and the war effort. It may not be just to him, I don't presume that it is. But I had no other options. I am sure that if the Warden can convince Anora of letting Alistair go, she can also be convinced of holding him prisoner and attempt to reason with him more. If he keeps refusing, then we can do something harsher.

And my sincere condolences for your loss.
I too lost someone I loved deeply. Not my father, but my grandfather who was almost like a father to me anyhow. When he died, I was very sad, I cried a lot, and then I went back to study for the very important exam I had for the next day. This might sound heartless, but what I am trying to say is that I had a responsability towards myself and my parents who were paying for my education, and that I know he would have wanted me to get a good grade (he didn't live long enough to see the diploma he had always wanted to see sadly). And well, I think Alistair should have realized that Duncan would have wanted him to fight the Blight.

I am not here trying to boast or suggest I am better. Like you said, every individual is different.
I agree completely that Alistair needed time. I just didn't have the option to give him time and I really disliked this.
I was backed into an artificial corner, an imposed and forced dichotomy.

I'm not saying that he should get a free pass because of it.  If I'd had the option, I would have punched him in the face for deserting me when I needed him most.  But only because he spent the majority of the game keeping me at somewhat of a distance because our 'duty as Wardens' and the 'Archdemon' should be our focus.  Then he has the gall to storm off because of his need for revenge and lack thereof.

And I agree with you yet again. I think our discussions are rather pleasant. :P

I don't see that as heartless. It made me feel sad, though but it's difficult to explain why in the right way. Sad FOR you, if that makes sense. I think it's honorable that you focused on the hopes he had for you. My dad wanted to live long enough to see my sister and I graduate. He died a month after hers. I still keep in mind all of the things he taught me and wanted for me and it does help with the grief a great deal, even after all this time has passed. No one heart feels the same way about things and that's what makes meeting people so wonderful, I think. We learn a lot from each other.

.................And what's the banner about with all the minions? xD I fully support this.

I understand what you mean.
And I agree.

The first time I played DA:O, I was mostly apathetic towards Alistair, so I didn't really care about the choice. But when I played my canon a 2nd time and then a 3rd time, I genuinely started to care for him more and more, even if we are almost polar opposites and that I find him immature. And the choice of executing him gradually got harder. But it had to be done, and even though the choice felt forced, the emotions it manages to involve are a testemony to the quality of the game.

.................And what's the banner about with all the minions? xD I fully support this.

Oh Zjarcal made it after it was requested by Monica (where is she??) lol. I think it was spawned by one of my comments, but I forgot :D

Image IPB  I don't think you need minions.  You're a force unto yourself.

In all seriousness, reading your veiws since joining this forum has been the main enjoyment for me.  It's always good to take a step back and try to see things from a different point, even if our own doesn't change in the end.  Lots of good food for thought.

It is certainly a pleasure talking to you again.  We must think of more things to pleasantly discuss.  Like Morrigan's lips being too fat.  Image IPB  I kid.  I kid.  You'd insult Alistair and I would have to throw down my gauntlet.  It would be a bloodbath.

For now though, I must say goodnight.  I have to earn that green so I can keep paying for my internet and other less important things like food and stuff.  Image IPB  Night to you and everyone else.  Have a great day tomorrow/today?

Nice fills today. It took me a while to catch up, but I loved each of them.

Now I submit my attempt:

Jealousy

Dan was enjoying a small snack he had fixed before leaving camp that morning. The group was heading to Orzammar, and using a seldom used path to avoid the main roads. They had received warning at the last village that Loghain had soldiers and scouts looking for them along the main roads to Orzammar. Loghain had figured that since Grey Wardens fought darkspawn, and the dwarves were known allies to them, that the survivors of Ostagar might head that direction. It was a strategy that Dan and Alistair had come across before when they encountered Zevran and his band of assassins along the road to Redcliffe. Dan took his little snack out of his pack once they had reached a small clearing and decided to take a break to rest. Alistair noticed what Dan had, and instantly recognized what it was.

"Is that cheese on bread?" He asked.

"Uh huh," Dan replied between bites. "It's a cheese sandwich. Fergus and I used to eat them all of the time growing up. It used to drive Nan crazy."

"But I thought we were out of cheese. "

"We are..now. This was the last of it when I made the two sandwiches this morning."

"You made two? I don't suppose...you still have the other one?"

"Nope," Dan replied while taking another bite. "I gave it to Leliana. She had never tried it before, and she liked it."

Alistair noticed he was salivating as he watched Dan take yet another bite. Dan knew he loved cheese. It was his favorite food. And the thought that Dan gave some to Leliana before giving him some began to unsettle him. How could Dan do this. Sure Leliana was Dan's lover, but they were like brothers. Comrades in arms. Fellow wardens. They had a special bond that Leliana could not have. But here Dan stood, eating the last of the cheese, and Leliana was given some before him.

"Why did you do that? You know how much I like cheese. Leliana has...different tastes. But you KNOW I would have enjoyed it."

Dan grinned as he took another bite. There was about a half of the sandwich left. He had thought of giving it to Alistair, but the reaction he was getting was too good. "I know. But she's special."

"Special? Look...I know you two are...but I thought we were like brothers. "

Dan took another bite...and another... delaying his response just to watch Alistair becoming more pleading as more and more of the sandwich was eaten, and the remaining cheese becoming less and less. Finally Dan had one bite left. He grinned at Alistair, "You, perhaps, want this last bit?"

"Please?" came Alistair's response.

Dan plopped the last bit into his mouth and chewed slowly causing a look of complete shock on Alistair's face. When he finally swallowed it, and the shocked look still washed over Alistair's face, Dan finally said, "Too bad. Next time we have cheese, I will make you one. But you had better quit teasing Leliana about her past."

"Quit...what? When did I ever..."

"'I've heard stories about Orlesian bards' ring a bell? She told me all about it. Not funny, Alistair. Not funny at all."

Alistair then realized just how important Leliana was to Dan. That no matter what, he would side with her. It wasn't a bad thing, he guessed, but it did change things a little. "Alright, I will stop teasing her."

"Good."

"So, you were joking about the cheese...right? You do have another one tucked away in there somewhere?"

"Nope," Dan grinned. "All gone."

Alistair turned and strode off in a huff. As he neared Leliana he simply looked at her and said, "It's all your fault." And then stormed off.

Confused, Leliana asked to Alistair's retreating back, "My fault? I don't understand?" But he did not answer and kept walking to a secluded spot in the clearing away from the others to stew in his frustration.
