 Jealousy.

By: Giggles_Manically.

Jealous.

That was the word that best described Alistair Therin, King of Fereldan, former Warden, and husband to Queen Anora.  Presently he was in a large room overlooking a smaller courtyard of the royal palace watching a small group of people leaving. His jealousy was wholly directed at one man in particular who was in the courtyard
below him who was in the center of that group. That man was Alim Surana his former friend who was departing from the capital that very day, to see the rest of the world three months after he had help end the blight.

Although it had not been Alistair, Alim, or Riordian who had ended the Blight, oh no it was Loghain
who had done that.  That wretched murdering monster had ended the blight, and was still know as the hero of Fereldan after EVERYTHING he had done.  No one remembered the army falling at Ostagar or the Alienage anymore except for a few people. All anyone ever remembered was Teyrn Loghain killing the Archdemon and saving his country AGAIN. The urge the hit something swept over Alistair for a brief moment but he regained composure fairly quickly.

Down below Alim, Leliana, Zevran, and Alim’s dog were all getting ready to head out to see the world like Alim had wanted to. Of course his lover and his best friend were tagging along with Alim. He was a big hero and a person they cared for so much that nothing he did even mattered to them really.

Alistair had once considered Alim a good friend until the Landsmeet that was, and him not only sparing Loghain but marrying him into Loghain’s family! Every time he so much as glanced at Anora he saw Loghain and
wanted to scream in anger. He got to live for the next thirty some odd years with her royal highness and had to deal with being the king as well. The rewards never ceased to pile up on him really, he was just SO lucky like that.

Looking down again another surge of jealousy swept through him as he saw Alim and Zevran laughing at something, probably him, and having such a great time. As of now he had no one except maybe Teagan if he ever visited to laugh like that with. Everyone expected him to be so reserved and proper now that he half expected people to die in shock if he even so much as smiled.

Looking back down again another wave of jealousy hit him as he watched Leliana sneak up behind the young elf and lace her arms around his waist with a laugh. Turning around quickly Alim kissed her, and both of them
smiled in each others arms for a moment until Zevran said something that made Leliana blush and sent Alim into a fit of laugher again. Looking away from the sight Alistair felt an almost unbearable pain in his chest as he realized that Alim and Leliana had something that he and Anora never would. Indeed the first night they slept in the same room he almost fell off the bed trying to keep away from Anora. It was just his luck that she snored too, another gift from the Maker to the new king no doubt.

Here he was stuck in this dark palace with his new wife, as he got to listen to how much of a hero Loghain was to everyone.  No one cared about Duncan, or Cailan, or Eamon, or the Alienage, or anything else except that Loghain was a hero again. The urge to vomit when he heard some minstrel singing about how Teyrn Loghain had slayed the beast and saved the land had been very bad.  He wanted to shake the man and yell at him about how the land was only so bad because that bastard had caused it to be like that in the first place!

Sighing Alistair was still stuck on whether or not he should go down and put in a royal appearance for his former friends and the small crowd that was gathering to see Alim off.

Still more jealousy rose up as he remembered hearing about how Alim had incinerated, frozen, and blasted through waves of darkspawn and cleaved right through them with his sword. Alim had been the heroic grey warden that day, after taking that away from him. As many songs as there being made about Loghain, or statues planned, there were just as many planned for Alim if not more. So not only does he get to see Duncan’s murderer everywhere, but the man who pardoned him everywhere as well. Really could his luck get ANY better, cause from here it seemed like life was just adding more and more blessings to him every day.

Looking out the open window again Alistair saw Alim and Anora talking to each other with genuine warmth and actually seeming sad at parting. All the way through the four months that Alim had known Anora the two had grown to be very close and had a real connection that Alistair lacked with his wife. Alim had decided to pack up and leave since he really did not see a place for himself anymore in Fereldan and the darkspawn were all fleeing so far
into the deep roads or the wilderness that none had been seen in two weeks.

Alim had almost ended up staying in Fereldan when the wardens had asked him to stay on as the Arl of Amaranthine to prove how useful wardens were. When Alistair suggested how brilliant it was Anora had simply
sighed and pointed out that people and the Chantry would not look past Alim being an elf and a mage. Alim had laughed at the letter as well and said that being an Arl was not on his list of life goals right now, or likely ever. They
ended up sending for a brilliant warden for Orlais who led three smaller cities for a decade and was by all reports a decent enough person.  He was half-Fereldan as well and that would sit better with many people on both sides so in about two months Amaranthine would become a new home for the wardens.

In a very out of character thing to do Anora reached out and embraced Alim in a hug, but very quickly regained her composure as the queen and smiled girlishly at having shown a real emotion Alistair guessed.  Not wanting to wait anymore Alistair decided to head down the stairs and outside to say farewell to Alim.  Heading past the Landsmeet chamber another surge of jealousy hit him as he recalled that day when Alim had ruined his life
forever.

It was Alim the nobles listened to as he pulled Loghain’s legend down around them, it was him that Loghain focused on as the two men argued for the future of Fereldan. It was Alim who was the eloquent speaker that day who had swayed the nobility that day.  He simply stayed in the crowd and watched the two men face off against each other.

Then it was Alim who they fell in line behind entirely, and Alim who Anora spoke of in such high terms.  Alistair wished he had been able to do that, and be the one who had swayed the nobles to their cause but once again he had let someone else chose for him.

The one point where Alistair had thought he could help, Alim overrode him and ended up being the one to duel Loghain for control of Fereldan. But instead of killing him like he deserved Alistair witnessed Alim and Riordian destroy the wardens forever by letting that man into their ranks. Alim did have a natural charisma and fire in him that people respected or feared. Alistair never had the same ability to lead or command people that Alim
had, even though at the Landsmeet he wished he had.

Pushing those thoughts away Alistair neared the main doors and waited for the guards to push them open for him.  Looking out onto the now emptying courtyard Alistair realized that Alim had already left and despite himself Alistair felt a pang of sadness as he realized that he had missed saying farewell to his
friends.

“Ah so it looks like the King has finally found time to put in appearance it seems” Anora said as she came up to him.  A slight look of annoyance creased her face as she stood in front of her husband.

“Well you know me I just love to show up where I am not wanted my wife” Alistair shot back.

Rolling her eyes Anora sighed and signalled Erlina her maid to come forward.

“Alim knew you might not show up to say goodbye so he asked me to give you this letter Alistair” Anora said as Erlina handed Alistair a sealed letter.

“You could have at least said goodbye Alistair but like Cailan you probably spent more time pouting then doing” Anora continued. With that she turned and left Alistair standing in the near deserted courtyard. Trying to think of something to say Alistair realized that there was no point in sinking so low.

Leaning up against a wall Alistair proceeded to open up the letter that Alim had left for him and started to read.

Alistair

I know that you will probably never forgive me, or even want to talk to me again, I understand.

I hope you know that I wish you well, and that I will always value those months we spent as friends as
good ones. You will do a good job as the king, and you will show people that you are more than just a nobody who was dumped on the throne.

I regret losing your friendship too even though I never told you that or had the chance to tell you that. There are things about the blight that I cant tell you that I learned and suffice it to say Loghain did pay the highest price for his sins, even if you don’t know how high. I think for just that last moment Loghain came out from under his hatred and understood something about himself. He did not die as the monster that you think he was, but that is not what I want to say.

I will miss you, and your friendship Alistair, since you were one of the few people who ever did treat me as a person in my life. I wish things had gone differently or that we did not end up divided like this.

Maybe one day if we meet again you and I will be able to sort all this out. If I ever do come back to Fereldan I hope that we can try and go back to what we once had before everything went crazy.
Your old friend,

Alim Surana.

P.S. Dont let Anora and Eamon run all over you, and just do your best I know you can. At least try and act nice to Anora though Alistair, despite what you think she still is human.

Putting the letter in a pocket Alistair mulled over what he had just read. Maybe just maybe he was not as angry as he once was at Alim.

Letting out a sigh Alistair headed for the kitchen to see if he could get something to eat before getting too busy.

Not sure if I like it but here it is.

@Giggles : I like the way you described Alistair's flaming hatred. Though I personally will never do the redeemer ending. Ever. Ever, ever, ever, ever, EVER.

@Jon : Sound muting is legit only while playing Zerg. No seriously, all that squishy squashy is bad for you.

How can you not love the voice of the Queen?

But admittedly, the voice of the Overmind in SC1 was better.

@Merisell - New chapter?! Yey!!!!! *speeds off*

Also, Oghren can bust a move like no other.

Also also, amazing prompt response Giggles, you really captured the emotions I imagine a Redeemer end/married to Anora Alistair would feel about the situation

90% of the time Alistair marries Anora.

Giggles, that was really good. I liked how Alim wanted to tell Alistair about the sacrifice, but did not. I think he was right in that Alistair would not understand or believe what the price was.

I dont know there just seems to be something off about it too me.

Alim is actually sad about losing a friend but knows that it will take time.

Its fun to write this though because I keep seeing a different part of Alistair's mind.

Also I keep remembering how Gaider said that Alistair's hatred of Loghain corrupted him, as much as Loghain's hatred of Orlais corrupted him.

'Tis all about Adjudant. If you want to have sex with her, additional supply depots are required.

Off topic over.

cme, I hope no one thinks that, because there is no reason to be upset about your group.  It's really nice to have a place to chat about things that are not Alistair-related and that have no place in this thread.  And I'm sure the moderators would rather we take completely off-topic discussions elsewhere.  We haven't abandoned this thread.  A lot of us still post here whenever we can.

Meril, I'm not sure why you're so angry about this.  You are a member there, and a regular here.  Why do all of us have to be here all the time?

To back Meril up, I think the way groups "look" is quite annoying. Like you can't pick the page you want to see for instance. Nor is there as much posts on one page like here, nor does it look good when you have a big post you wrote.

For me, it's the presentation of the groups that didn't encourage me to visit them that much. It's not as accessible as threads.

Younger.

I think the original version of Alistair is in his 30s. Most placed him in his mid 20s. Apparently DG said he is in  his early 20s.

Is there a fight over this or something?
