--------------
Alistair's right hand found the edge of the cool stone plinth before him. He did not withdraw it when his little finger accidentally touched her hair.
He glanced at her once lively face, now so serene in repose. His face, in contrast, was filled with regret.
"I thought…we would be together forever," he murmured.
He looked up at the quiet audience, clad in their Sunday best. The guests seated in front leaned forward, straining to hear his words. With somber faces, they waited for him to continue.
He blinked and swallowed hard. He took a deep breath, then another. Finally, he was able to continue the eulogy. He strove to speak clearly and coherently; public speaking had, of course, never even been an interest, much less a strong suit. But he was in a daze. This couldn't really be happening…could it?
At the time, saying goodbye to her at the gates of Denerim had been the hardest thing he'd ever done. She'd tried to hide it, but he'd seen fear in her eyes then, so uncharacteristic, and it had only added to his pain. He was angry, too, about her choice, but she'd insisted that he remain behind to protect the gates while she left to hunt the enemy generals. "You have to be king," she'd said, looking into his eyes with the steely determination that he so admired. Despite the fact that Ferelden had a competent leader, she had made up her mind some time ago that her country deserved a king who cared more for his people than for power. And he'd known at the time that that, as they say, was that. So on this night he'd said his goodbyes, just in case, and resigned himself to praying that both of them would make it through the night.
That terrible goodbye had still been hopeful. It could not compare to having to mourn her with all of these people watching. For the most part, they had not known her personally. For that matter, most of them did not even know much about him yet. They knew nothing of the long weeks of fighting leading up to this victory, nothing of the other losses or of the many smaller sacrifices that had been made. Most of all, they knew nothing about how his world had, in the blink of an eye, been turned upside down.
Even during the worst of the fighting, facing wave after wave of physically manifested evil coming through the gates, the only thing he could think about was whether she was still alive at any given instant. He wondered if, were she to fall, his soul would feel the moment of her passing. But this was a romantic and, he'd soon learned, a foolish notion. In the chaos following the battle, it had been hours before he'd discovered that Riordan had failed—that in the seconds following the Archdemon's death, the light cleaving the heavens had been *her* doing, and undoing. Only after he'd seen Leliana running toward him, out of breath and in tears, and she'd laid her hand upon his arm, had the truth dawned on him. Then the world had begun to spin, the ground to give way. Elation had turned, mercurially, to deepest despair.
No, these many people who had not known her expected their new king to give a fitting speech about the greatness of a hero who would soon be buried far away at Weisshaupt--a hero whose very real life would, over time, fade away into legend. But all he could think about right now was his own, very personal loss. Briefly, he remembered that Arl Eamon was already bending his ear about trouble in the Bannorn; it would not even be possible to accompany her body to the fortress. Suddenly, he felt that his bitterness would swallow him whole.
Yes, he had agreed to become king. But putting on a brave face for these people, burying his pain beneath a facade of stoicism and strength…it was utterly alien, the hardest thing he'd ever had to do. He could not wait to be finished and to be alone again, if only for a short time, with his grief.

My gosh, you guys are killing me. How do you rescue Lilly??? Is it a mod. Why don't I know these things after playing 15 times.
Yes, the Lily rescue is a quest in the Karmas Companions mod that someone already linked to. I haven't played the Jowan romance yet. I've only done the Cullen LI, which I enjoyed a lot. But Jowan has become my main mage now. The companions are unvoiced, which took me a short time to get used to. But for companions that we already know well, I think it would be a little weird to hear a strange and possibly poorly acted voice coming from them. There's a lot of new dialogue for both characters. Gorim is also a possible companion, but I haven't played him at all.
I'm back to playing my Cousland girl's game and LOL! Jowan just pulled her aside and asked if something was going on with her and Alistair, and said he didn't approve. He's not so fond of Alistair's templar skills.
It's a huge mod, with a bunch of new quests and new areas. The installation of the mod and compatibility fixes was a little complicated. But I'm having a lot of fun with it.

It does occur to me that I am projecting my PC's feelings onto Alistair -- hardened or not, he is much more duty-bound than my PC is, so maybe he wouldn't be this much of a wreck. But my PC would, if the shoe were on the other foot. She *assumes* that her dying would be the worst thing ever to happen to him, haha...
When I didn't to the DR and kept Alistair at the gates, it bothered me that there was no strong acknowledgement that Riordan was still supposed to be out there to take the Archdemon down (I think one option went "this could be it," another was "we both know what this means"). And no kiss after the latter! WTF!
If anyone has any constructive criticism, please send it my way (or post it if you think it wouldn't bore others--?). I would like to write more, but it has been a loooooong time since my only creative writing class, so feedback would be great.

Alistair paced the hallway in front of Duncan's office. "oh Maker" he kept saying to himself. "How in Thedas am I to ask Duncan this question?" "Oh great, now I'm babbling to myself." "Alistair, get a backbone. Just because your new brothers won't answer this question, doesn't mean it's a dumb question... does it?" "Andrasta's flaming sword, even Mouse blushed 3 colors of red before telling me to go ask Duncan."
So lost in thought, he didn't hear Duncan's approach. Only after the Commander had cleared his throat did Alistair realize he was standing there. "Uh, Humm you got a second? I really need to talk with you about something."
Duncan only laughed. "I heard from Mouse that the noontime meal break talk got rather embarassing" Duncan opened the door to his office. "Come on in and lets talk about it."
"Well you know then that they were all talking about Brylund's Lady. I just don't understand if he loves her that much, hmmmm why doesn't he just marry her? What's so... ah... wrong with getting married and having you know children. Are the Grey Wardens like the Templars? Is there some unwritten rule that we can't fall in love and have children?
Duncan only smiled at Alistair. "There's no rule written or otherwise about marriage or falling in love, Alistair. Perhaps in the case of Brylund, it's more of why bother. Yes he loves Kayleen very much. Have you asked Mouse about this? I rather got the feeling that the two of you have become close since your Joining."
"I TRIED! She just got flustered and threw a book at me then yelled how dense could I be? Bear said I should take it up with you and something about not scoring points with Mouse." At this point Alistair had the look of a confused puppy.
Duncan just sighed. "Alistair, after the Joining, well it becomes very hard for a Warden to reproduce. Even harder if both parents are Wardens. Brylund knows that Kayleen wants children that he can't give her. As for Mouse, well you'll see if you haven't figured that one out on your own. Maker knows the rest of us have."
"Huh? Wait, how did this turn into me and Mouse? She's well, she's my best friend. First time I've ever had a best friend too. And... wait a second, You think that she and I... OH MAKER!"
"I don't think the Maker had much to do with this. And why not? Mouse and you are about the same age. It's only natural that you would be drawn to each other. I suggest next time she throws a book at you, that you might want to read that book."
At this point, Alistair decided that a quick retreat was in order. As he fled from the office he saw Brylund waiting to enter. But he didn't stop to talk, just kept moving.
"Do you think we should tell him about the time I had to wear Massive Armor for three weeks in fear of running into Kayleen?" ask Brylund to Duncan. both men just laughed then Duncan replied "Lets just hope that's the hardest thing he's going to ask, for now."

Cool. Glad you liked it.
So, is there a link somewhere to a larger version of that pic you posted the other day? I think I saw it referred to as "boat," although I sure didn't notice any boat. (Actually, he could have been standing on the deck of the QE2 and I *still* wouldn't have noticed any boat...
