Gaider writes good characters.

What I found most telling was that Gaider said at one point:
Alistair's hatred of Loghain corrupted him, Like Loghain's hatred of Orlais corrupted him.

They both remind me  of Ahab in Moby Dick. I'm sure I've called them both Ahab at times.. (I'll bet Gaider will even admit to being influenced by Melville in his creation of vendetta gone overboard.)

If ever one embarks on a voyage of revenge, first dig two graves.

Revenge is an interesting thing in a story.

Shakespeare has that covered very well in Hamlet.

What I think is interesting is that Flemeth goaded both Loghain and Alistair on.  Loghain by making him discount the Blight's threat (he didn't believe he would betray Maric so he dismissed her prediction of a Blight too), Alistair very overtly by talking of "the dark shadows before you take your vengeance."

I remember that play.

THAT had to be the single most gory play I ever read.

I never implied that he wasn't human nor that I want perfect flawless characters in the game. Those particular occasions annoy me in the same way they would annoy me in RL. The other characters also have their moments where I want to smack them over the head.

I agree. I don't see why disliking it when someone in a game does something means it must be unrealistic or why realistic reactions always have to mean that they get a pass on whatever they did anymore than everyone IRL would get a pass over whatever THEY do because of how realistic and human their reactions are.

Yep, I am tired of that argument. It should not even be considered an argument. It's stating the obvious. Yes no one is flawless. A flaw is still a flaw however, a major flaw is still a major flaw, I do not care if it makes him any less or more human. Recognizing a flaw is the first step to either subdue it or fix it.

When talking about a character, flaws are great, I dont' want to read or meet a perfect character. They would be boring. I still do not see why I cannot judge a person for having major flaws and for doing acts that are erroneous and stupid. It's not their humanity I am judging, it's their intelligence and maturity.

Same here. I enjoyed it though - it was the first text on my Shakespeare and Elizabethan Drama module this semester just finished. Critics think it's less polished than most of Shakespeare's work and are less keen on it but I honestly preferred it to some of the others Ive read.

Finally decided to do my cannon run through of Origins before DA2 comes out and I have a question for all you Alistair fans.

I haven't yet decided who I plan to romance for this cannon playthrough as I like both Morrigan and Leliana but this choice pretty much decides Alistair's fate. So my question for yall is which outcome do you think is the best for my Alistair? Here are the choices:

If Morrigan is romanced option 1; Warden will do the Dark Ritual and let Anora rule alone. Warden and bestist bud Alistair continue their lives as Grey Warden's until my Warden eventually disappears with Morrigan.

If Morrigan is romanced option 2; won't do the Dark Ritual and Alistair sacrifices himself to kill the Archdemon.

Leliana is romanced option 1; won't do the Dark Ritual and Alistair sacrifices himself to kill the Archdemon.

Leliana romanced option 2; won't do the Dark Ritual and Loghain becomes a Grey Warden. Alistair becomes a drunkard but is still alive.

Leliana romanced option 3; Alistair's does the Dark Ritual and Anora rules alone. Warden and Alistair stay bestist buds and the Warden gets to stay with Leliana.

If Morrigan or Leliana are romanced and I decided to break my Warden's personality; harden Alistair and marry him to Anora. Recruit Loghain and have him sacrifice himself to kill the Archdemon.

Obviously hardening Alistair and marrying him to Anora while letting Loghain sacrifice himself is the overall "best" outcome but it goes against how I'm RPing my Warden. So taking that into account which of the other scenarios do you think is best for Alistair per romance option? I know he ends up dead in two of them but he obviously wants to do it when you reach that point. I also have no idea what I'll do when it comes to the Dark Ritual, I can swing either way and it'll be a "of the moment" choice.

Thanks for your answers!

But as you said, the more you like and identify with a character, the more likely you are to forgive or ignore those flaws, and learn to live with them, just as one would in real life. On the other hand, we may not feel as inclined to forgive or ignore those annoying traits if we don't like the character that much in the first place.

My point was more than anything to respond to your initial post where you mentioned how him not always agreeing with your PC was a good thing, something which I agree with, but that doesn't mean I have to like the character just because he/she stood up to me. It depends.

Agree on both counts.

@Sarah and KoP - Just to clear this up since it's obvious my original thoughts have gotten twisted into the old "is he flawed or not" debate... that wasn't my argument at all.  I was just stating that A) I don't think Alistair whines and I get tired of hearing ppl say he does (and I was not referring to anything you'd said, KoP) and B) His reactions that same said ppl feel are whining are fine by me because they add depth to his character, flaws and all.

@Silver - Exactly!  GMTA for sure!  B)

EDIT:  @Setre - My vote would be a Drunkistair if you don't want to harden him and make him co-rule with Anora.  But, I am in the severe minority in this forum because I've come to despise the DR, so take my suggestion with a grain of salt.  LOL

Giggles, where is that video you posted of a woman talking about the Alistair romance? I post mostly from work and don't have audio there, then I can never go back and find links when I want them.

@Setre2796

Being the fangirl I am, I have to say I'm against any of the ones involving Alistair dying or becoming a drunk. ;)
And the thought of Alistair getting married off to Anora....ew.

Other than that, the other options are good. :)

Hope that helps.

Setre, My canon romanced Leliana, Alistair sole ruler and performed the DR so my warden did not cheat on Leliana, and became the teryn of Gwaren after the blight ended.

Oh, I apologize for misreading then.

In the old days, I thought he was a whiner because I only looked at him superficially, but then I was convinced that he was not. Of course perhaps many still think I view him superficially :D

I was pretty sure the Snow Globe thread was satire and the Twitterstairians had to break it to me that it probably wasn't.

O/t but this is very funny.

Hello beautistair...err I mean ohai Tigress M

@Addai67 Skyrim vid was pure awesome

I was sure the lone girl was taking the mick, and the two girls were more serious but it is hard to tell. I'm not sure I get the whole vlogging about game characters thing in the first place. I prefer comedy forum posts about office hijinx and fake journey diaries.

Which reminds me Circenne is due for one....
