A Moment So Powerful It Touches One's Soul
Dan, Alistair, Wynne, and Leliana approached the chantry near the Denerim market. They were there to find a suitable place for the documents they had found while searching for Andraste's ashes. Leliana had suggested the Denerim chantry, and Dan agreed that it would be the best place to leave what appeared to be old important documents. When they had arrived they had found a curator who could take care of the documents. She had also deciphered them and discovered they had belonged to the husband of Andraste, Maferath. As the party began to leave, Dan stopped to realize what they had just found.
"Those were his memoirs. His actual memoirs. I still cannot believe after all this time we found a real piece of history."
"You sound profoundly touched, Dan. What is so different about this piece than others we have found, like those in the Ortan Thaig in the Deep Roads?" asked Alistair.
"Or the Magister's shield?" was Wynne's query.
Leliana looked at the other two and grinned. "After all of our travels, you still do not know one of Dan's private passions? He felt deeply about all of those discoveries. But this one has a deeper and more powerful meaning to him. It's just not that it is history. But it is Ferelden history. Our history. The Ortan records were dwarven, the shield Tevinter. But Andraste was Ferelden. Her story and place is Ferelden. And these scrolls are a big part of Ferelden history. "
Wynne and Alistair looked at each other, then at Leliana. "So he is a history buff. And granted Andraste is extremely important, but why are these document specifically important to you, Dan?" asked Wynne. Alistair nodding his own agreement with Wynne's question.
Dan took a long breath as he still reeled from the revelation of their discovery. "Don't you see? We have a chance to see Maferath's pain and thoughts from that time, and in his own words. We have records and accounts about him, but not from him. These help us to understand why he did what he did. How he felt about his actions. These tell us more about those final moments in Andraste's life than we ever dreamed to know. And we found them..US! Assumed to be lost forever and now found. And we touched them! We brought them here safely. For me this is more profound than the ashes. This is a part of us rediscovered. A part of ourselves found for all." His excitement was now obvious to his companions.
"Well, we were able to do some good bringing them here, then." said Wynne.
"And now we can get some cheese. I am starving."
Alistair's statement caused Leliana to giggle, and Dan reached over to nussle Alistair's hair. "Only you would find a way to turn something so profound as this and turn it into a pursuit of food."
"Heeey, you found something so powerful to touch you so deeply, and now with this gold I am going to do the same. I bet I can find some really fine cheeses here in the market!" Alistair ran towards the market stalls while fixing his hair leaving the others chuckling in his wake.

I Am No Emperor Drakon
Alistair sat at the desk in Cailan's study. Well, it was his study now. Since the blight was over he was now the newly crowned king. He was still trying to get used to the title and position. It was just hours earlier he had presented his close friend as the Hero of Ferelden and new Teryn of Gwaren. Now Alistair sat alone contemplating the duties he would soon have to take over. He never wanted to be king, but after Dan had told him that people always look out for their own interests he decided being king would not be so bad as he imagined it to be. Now sitting in the big chair, his doubts began to return. He knew nothing about being king and even less about governing a country. Perhaps Anora would have been a better choice for the throne. But she was not the right person either. Her father, for all his successes in the past, had to many recent faults to trust her with the country. After all, she idolized him even after the Landsmeet. No, Alistair knew he was in his rightful place. Eamon knew it, and so did Dan. As much as he hated to admit it, those two men were right.
A heavy sigh jarred him back to reality, and he lifted his head to see Dan standing in the doorway. He had already removed his armor and was now dressed in the light clothing he preferred during their nights at camp these past two years. Alistair noticed a familiar style to his friend. He always wore clothing that seemed a size too big. Baggy pants under a billowy short belied the strength underneath. Dan had always said he liked to dress the way he did to remain unnoticed, but Alistair always suspected it was something else. But these thoughts still distracted him from what was really important. His friend had caught him in a moment of distraction.
"I see you survived the adoring mobs of fans this afternoon. I figured you would be with Leliana after all this ruckus and frivolity."
"I will in due time. I wanted to see how you were doing first. Eamon said you were pacing around earlier and muttering. He even said you refused some cheese sandwiches that were brought up earlier."
"I wasn't hungry."
"Alistair, I know better. I have never seen you refuse any cheese dish unless you were very troubled. And especially cheese sandwiches after I introduced them to you. So, my friend, spill it. What has you so troubled?"
"Well...this," Alistair said gesturing towards the entire room. "I am king. I know you told me I would make a good king. But I am not so sure. I may be Maric's son, but I am also no Emperor Drakon. I am not sure I can even measure up to Cailan, and I've been told over and again that Anora did most of the work. And I have no wife to do this for me. I feel so lost. Why did you do this to me again? I really want to know in case I decide to flog you."
"You are a fine king," chuckled Dan.
"How are you so sure? How do you even know?"
"Right now, the way you are acting on the very first day on the job. If you weren't a good king you would not be this upset. Because you are shows that this is important, and you know it. Eamon will be here to help out for now, and so will I if you ever need me. Bann Alfstanna has also agreed to help you out should you need it. Besides, not everyone needs to be an Emperor Drakon. Hell, even he was fallible no matter what anyone thinks. But you will learn these things and not need anyone's help. It just takes some time."
"I'm glad you have faith in me. More than I do at any rate."
"Just relax. You'll do fine. And speaking of which, Alfstanna would make a fine queen...if you ever.. you know."
"Still trying to play the matchmaker? She's too old. Besides, I really want to meet that cousin of yours. the redhead you kept telling me about while we were in the Deep Roads."
"Maggie? Well..I suppose..."
"Don't make me issue a royal decree."
"See, already making kingly decisions," laughed Dan.
"Oh, just get out of here," the king chuckled. "Go find Leliana and pester her."
"As you wish, your highness." Dan bowed as he turned to leave the room.
"And don't forget what I said about Maggie. I was serious about that."

It took a long time to make all those dead people! And when you think that all of Ostagar would have looked like that.... Kind of brings the magnitude of it home more than scattered bones.Yankee23 wrote...

“Warden? Warden Alistair?” A male voice gasped out behind the young warrior as Alistair went in search of the mage the Revered Mother wanted to hara-, erm, deliver a message to. Grateful for the potential diversion, he turned around to see a young elven man in a messenger’s uniform standing nervously before him.
Trying to settle the poor guy down, Alistair smiled at him warmly and winced internally when the elf seemed even more nervous. “Yes, I’m Alistair. What can I do for you?”
“You’ve been asked to come to the healer’s tent, something about a recruit by the name of Daveth.”
“Maker’s breath! Hasn’t that idiot learned by now?” Alistair didn’t realize he’d said that out loud until he saw the messenger’s eyes widen. “Oh, not you. Thank you for letting me know, if you could let them know I’m on my way?”
With a hasty bob of his head the elf took off and Alistair. There’d probably be more stories going around about the Wardens after this. Grimly he went to the healers to see what mess Daveth found himself in this time.
Alistair arrived in time to see an older man finish wrapping a bandage around the pickpocket’s stomach along with a lecture about not angering women who carry weapons. And more importantly know how to use them. Daveth seemed to be ignoring the healer, until he saw Alistair glaring at him over the man’s shoulder, arms crossed his chest in anger. The rogue paled, clearly remembering the last time he was at the receiving end of Alistair’s temper.
“Look, Alistair, it’s not what you think it is!” Daveth was clearly scared.
The healer snorted as he cleaned and put away his equipment, “You’re lucky she didn’t gut you or geld you, son. Though I am surprised that she brought you in to be healed.”
Daveth laughed nervously, “Oh, she’s not the one who did it.”
With a disbelieving grunt, the healer left, leaving Daveth to deal with Alistair. The not-quite-templar continued to glower down at the recruit that was in his charge, “Finally got what was coming to you?”
The dark haired man rubbed the back of his head as he considered his response. “I suppose you could say that. I, uh, met the new recruit that Duncan brought from Highever.”
Alistair closed his eyes with a groan, “Did you already ****** her off, Daveth? You are aware that we’ll have to work with her, right? Not a good idea to go into battle with someone out for your blood.”
“Noooo, I wouldn’t dare with her. She’s got the eyes of a killer, she does. She’s the one who helped get me here before I bled out.”
He could feel a headache coming on and wondered just what Duncan brought into the Wardens. Before he could say anything, Daveth gave him a disgruntled look, “Wished you told me that she’s…well a she. And a real cutie too. Well, would be if she didn’t have them creepy lookin’ eyes.”
The blonde haired man sighed, too annoyed to blush over what he was about to say, “Daveth, really, just keep it in your pants. You keep this up and something worse is likely to happen to you before any of us can help. And why do you keep calling Marlana a she? Didn’t you at least get her name?”
Daveth laughed nervously before saying, “Yeah, yeah. Anyway, I better go look up Duncan before he comes looking for me…”
“Good idea, maybe he can keep you out of trouble.”
Rather than risk another lecture from Alistair, Daveth tried to scamper off, but ended up limping off as his injured abdominal muscles hampered him. Shaking his head in disgust and hoping that Daveth would be fit for the pre-Joining darkspawn hunt, Alistair went off in search of the mage the revered mother wanted to him to deliver a message to.
Unfortunately, he found the mage quicker than expected so his lingering annoyance with Daveth bled over to that fun little conversation. The mage picked up on it, thinking it was direct at him and naturally took offense. During that conversation, Alistair was aware of another person approaching, but stood far enough back to give the two men room to finish their conversation. The mage’s ire just sparked Alistair’s penchant for sarcasm so what should have been a quick request almost ended up…messy.
Finally the mage conceded to go see the cleric and deliberately shoved his way past their observer. Alistair turned to look and knew that trouble had certainly arrived in the form of a very exotic looking young woman with golden brown skin, long silver-white hair and the biggest blue eyes he’d ever seen. And wondered where Daveth thought she had the eyes of a killer, they did seem to see their way to a person’s soul, but they seemed more shadowed by sadness than ready to kill.
He was right though, she was trouble, even if she wasn’t the kind of trouble he was initially afraid of when he got Duncan’s letter.
Struck dumb, he said the first thing that came into his head, “You know, one good thing about the Blight is how it brings people together.”
He was rewarded by a faint twitch upwards of one corner of her mouth, and while those eyes were still shadowed, he saw that the shadowed had lightened.
Yep, trouble indeed.

@Rage - Hehe, and she actually liked Daveth. Or well, could tolerate him more than Jory. She felt a little guilty about the way the idiot died.

Edit: And I thought I posted about your prompts, but apparently had a brainfart.
I love how Dan and Alistair really are like brothers. And only Alistair could turn a moment like what Dan was having into something about cheese.
And with the second...I have always felt somewhat guilty about making Alistair king, even with my Warden being around. But the alternatives just didn't sit well.

Thanks Reika. I've played that canon run three times now, and always end up the same with them having that brotherly bond. And for his being king I always felt it was the best for the two. Twice Dan has become Teryn of Gwaren which has become my main canon, and the first time he stayed as chancellor. But always the two would still be around in one form or another. And after playing the Maggie queen run (thank you ladies for convincing me to do that) It's nice to add her to the mix and give Alistair the strong woman he needs, plus bring the two men closer.
Wise choice, that.
