Took me a half hour to decide myself when the DR came up.

I mean, I've done the DR and US, Ive never done the Redeemer (but I dont plan in letting Loghain live for my import playthrough)

It's just, I know there are important decisions that must be made in Awakening, and I refuse to believe that the Ferelden nobility would ever allow an Orlesian to hold the Arling of Amaranthine so if I dont do the DR, I don't get to do Awakening, Golems, or Witch Hunt.... and I want my Warden to live dammit! I'm holding out for the hope of a Warden involved DA3!

The first time through, the decision took forever. But once I decided that it might be both a good thing and important (outside of selfish reasons), I do it everytime. There's a big unknown connection between the darkspawn and the old gods, and I can't help but think that it might be good to have one on the human side--or at least have one whose soul is untainted.

It actually didn't take me very long to think about the DR, because by then I knew if I didn't do the DR, either Alistair or my Warden were gonna bite it.

Edit: And because at that point, with the way everything else didn't go as planned, I knew Riordan wasn't going to get the killing blow. However I was disgusted at him jumping onto the back of a flying dragon.

See, I kind of have a terrible terrible plan for my FF (assuming it ever gets that far... Chapter 1 is 1/3rd of the way done though so who knows? :D) that involves the DR and then mitigating the issue. I will most likely either scrap this horrific plan before it ever happens or feel really guilty when I write the scene and then go play DA:O and cover morrigan with affection and gifts....

Edit: Disgusted? Reaally? I thought that it was foolish, but I gave the man a Crowning (and Dying) Moment of Awesome for it.

I've been playing and reading fantasy for a very long time. One of the more common themes is it's a Bad Idea to jump on the back of a flying dragon you intend to kill.

IMO, they never would have defeated the archdemon if it wasn't for Riordan's sacrifice, inconvenient as it may have been. Or it would have taken a lot longer and been much more difficult. He tore through it's wing, and more so  when he fell, forcing it onto the roof of Fort Drakon where we could get to it.

So you use the ballistae to shred its wings, or better yet have chains attached to the bolts to help bring it down and hold it down.

@Reika - It seemed to work out pretty well for Duncan in The Calling. Granted, I usually agree with you and in my normal fantasy mindset I try to avoid dragons. They think I'm crunchy and delicious. That being said, when I saw the High Dragon at the Temple of Andraste (mind you, this was my friend playing before I made my own character) I grabbed the controller, activated the Gong and handed it back to him saying "Practice for the Archdemon. Have fun."

Sure, they could have used chains on the end of the ballistas, but you have to remember that the Wardens had no idea that it was going to Denerim, they were getting ready to meet the Horde at Redcliffe.  Not to mention, the person using the Ballistas would have to be extremely skilled to hit such a fast moving aerodynamic target with archaic point and shoot as the thing rains spirit fire from hell down upon you kinda deal...

Agree with you Errant, the Archdemon was happy to just keep flying around, it had no reason to engage in close quarters combat with the one things it must know can kill it.

Yes, but that would be both undramatic and not rid the game of the one guy who can keep you or Alistair from dying. They had to kill him and it would have been anticlimatic for him to take a darkspawn arrow or something equally inglorious.

@Glor - I haven't read the Calling, so can't say. But I did kill the high dragon on the off chance the darkspawn could corrupt it into something like a mini-archdemon.

After months with no decaps from anyone except Leliana (Zevran probably would have gotten them, but I haven't done a playthrough yet where he's a regular member of the party), Alistair has suddenly decided to start decapitating darkspawn on a regular basis. These are all from my last two evenings of play:

I love how in the bottom two Alistair is off to the next kill before the body has even hit the ground. A man on a mission.

He could have been conveniently LATE, Alistair sacrifices himself and Riordan is there to comfort ytour warden as the ONLY person besides you to actually CARE that Alistair died.

@Glor - If I were afraid of spoilers, I wouldn't be on this board. ;)

And, I guess for all of my squishy romance in my FF, I'm a practical soul in some respects. Dealing with giant ass dragons qualifies, I guess. :)

Yes, that would have worked. Not sure it would have had the same visceral impact of knowing that it had to be one of the two of you as you approached the archdemon, though.

Does the Warden actually know that Riordan's dead at that point? If they're just assuming it because he's not there then him just showing up late for whatever reason (mobbed by darkspawn?) would have the same effect for the characters.

Agreed! The first time I saw a decap I spent way too long looking around for that head on the ground. "What, did it fly over there? No? What about over there? No? Huh? Is it gone...?" Guess I was just being too hopeful. Haha.

There's a cutscene where it shows the Warden's face fall and you kind of droop right after Riordan falls.  I always assumed it's because you witness Riordan dying.

Agreed, I always assumed since it's a cut scene triggered by map movement, that you have just seem him fall as you arrive at the palace district.Well it's the palace district for me, since I skip the Market District.

I've heard that it's very hard to make heads come off and hit the ground in a way that doesn't look humorous.
