Errant -- I did find some of it entertaining - Isabela, Varric, and Merill were my party throughout the entire game except during specific companion quests, and their dialogue together was sometimes hilarious.

Also some of the one liners, while cheap laughs or nods at pop culture, did elicit laughter. "I like big boats, I cannot lie."

Also, I felt more like my Warden than I felt like Hawke. With the Warden, I could put my own voice, my own mind directly into the character based on the text I was reading. I decided the tone, the emotion behind it, etc etc. With Hawke, I had three words that described a soliloquy and I cannot count how many times I meant to just say no and got angry or violent or a "go to hell" instead.

I totally felt like my warden. I felt like Cyrano de Bergerac in DA2

I probably didn't spend enough time with all the companions. Especially Isabella whom I really didn't like. Mostly I was trying to figure out how to bring part 2 of my story in line with DA2 lore *facepalm*

I did LOL at the nigerian prince scam letter that Hawke received. And I liked Varric very much, even if I would have made him put on a shirt, given inventory control. ;)

I just didn't like most of the that much, even if I felt empathy for them. They were just too eff'd up and/or wrong-headed.

Generally, I had (at first) Carver or Aveline, Anders, and Varric, then Aveline, Anders, annd Varric or Sebastian. Probably not the most hilarious groupings. I think part of the problem was that there was no character that I could really identify with. Hmmm. Now that I think about it, that's probably a big part of the problem win the 'fun' area.

Heh, your loss. It would be preferable not to see ourselves at all, but it's better than being a fly on the wall and throwing the whole thing into the third person. That's excusable to set the scene, but not in conversation.

Indeed. Looking at my expresionless warden just feels odd now (I still love her though... :D). I definitely don't want to go back to the silent PC (though I already knew that after playing the ME series). And no, that's not a "loss" in my view.

A voiced PC done right can work wonders and I feel that's the case with Hawke. And I do feel like she's MY character, not someone else's.

And I don't have anything Alistair related to say. Well, other than saying that I saw his second drunk cameo.

One of the pictures from my story. I'm not going to most most of these outside the story itself for spoiler reasons, but one won't hurt. ;) Especially since you can't tell what's going on here.

I actually found even more merit to silent PC now.

But voiced is fun too if done correctly, which I think it was in DA2.
That said, I did not feel I was playing my character. I felt I was playing one of the 3 versions of Hawke.
I did not feel the same attachement to Gabriel Hawke that I did with Arcturus. In large part maybe cause I base Arcturus on myself, but still. Another example, I am more attached to Dain Aeducan than I am with Gabriel.

Just cause.

Agree with you KoP, one hundred percent. The voiced protagonist was done well, but I didnt feel anywhere near the connection I did with Glorfindel Surana or Durin Aeducan (my nods to LotR are obvious....)

You don't need an excuse to post the seal KoP... :P

I myself I'm having a hard time not playing Ciera Hawke as Dana Cousland 2.0... :pinched:

But I do feel just as attached to her as I did with Dana. Then again, I was also very attached with my Shepard so it's not surprising.

Anyway, one of the things I love about a voiced PC is being able to take screenshots of them showing actual emotion... so now I can post an angry Ciera anytime I see a troll post or something like that...

Image IPB

Yeah, I just wanted an excuse to post a pic of her. :D

I really wish I could screenshot on my xbox... I had some amazingly awesome moments, and they're all just recorded in my head....

Like at one it bugged and while I was in the middle of casting firestorm, I hit the mind blast button and everyone infront of me was thrown backwards stunned only to be pounded midair by falling fire. At another point, I flawlessly switched between two people while staff meleeing and one was flipped over backwards after being killed and the other got the blade right in the face and fell back.

Alas, I play on the console. My awesome moments are for me and me alone.

@ Glor
I was in the darkness before as well, as a console player. Until I found my way out ot the cave and discovered the sun that is the PC version.

Hopefully, you will ascend and discover the Light.

@Giggles - around the same time Varric last shaved his chest

@Maria -- I have a question about Alistair and templars in general. Do you think that they recite or chant part of the Chant of Light while they're using their Templar powers? I think it would be pretty cool, at least from a fanfiction perspective, that as they're gathering the will for a Smite or something they recite the Chant, or while they're fighting apostates and maleficar they try to dampen the magical power by chanting and extending their will.

"Blessed are the peacekeepers, champions of the just."

@KoP

1st) Excellent nod at the Allegory of the Cave
2nd) I wish! I just don't have the money to get the new graphics card and more ram to be able to make my computer a gaming machine.

@Glor. Lovely question. I noted that in DA2 Sebastian says that even as a lay brother her can recite the chant, and I presume he meant officiating. No reason why a Templar couldn't then, especially a pious one when using their powers. Speculating some could use it as a sort to mantra to assist their concentration rather than lyrium...

In my FF I had the Templars reading the chant in Lothering the night before the hoard arrives because they know they are going to die attempting to slow it down.

Eventually all religious texts seem to accrue a more supersitious use and the Templars would not be exempt from this. I'm thinking about those in Redcliffe that ask the Mother to give them blessed medallions because they believe it will help them in the fight.

I think they'd do it for psychological effect. To boost their morale, and to demoralize their enemies. Little is as frightening as a fanatically resolved enemy.

The Templars are chosen for their religious resolve afterall:

"While mages often resent the templars as symbols of the Chantry's control over magic, the people of Thedas see them as saviors and holy warriors, champions of all that is good, armed with piety enough to protect the world from the ravages of foul magic. In reality, the Chantry's militant arm looks first for skilled warriors with unshakable faith in the Maker, with a flawless moral center as a secondary concern.Templars must carry out their duty with an emotional distance, and the Order of Templars prefers soldiers with religious fervor and absolute loyalty over paragons of virtue who might question orders when it comes time to make difficult choices."

From the codex.

Aye - I can imagine how demoralizing it would be for an apostate on the run to hear the Canticle of Transfigurations as the Templars close in on them, swords raised.

Trying desperately to get to Malta before the big move back to the Western hemisphere. A trip to the RL Templar castle would be fitting at this time, no?

Absolutely there was one hell of a battle waged there wasn't there? Good novel on it, "The Religion" by Tim Willocks. Highly recommended. Doesn't take sides...

@ Maria - haven't read that one yet. Will check it out tomorrow. Need to reread GRRMartin too. Malta is an interesting place. I've been to the Templar castle on Rhodos, so I really want to do the Malta one before I leave.
