Yay! I'm the oldest! (Wait... not sure if I should be happy, or sad about that...)

Be happy that you're cool enough to still be into video games? Honestly, the older I get, the more out of touch I feel with all my old friends, who seem to be slipping into lives that I would find incredibly boring. They're all getting so conservative. What's worse, they don't even listen to what others have to say, but just drone on and on about their own mundane baloney. It's rather depressing. I tried telling my sisters about how DA was so much better and more immersive than any TV show (my middle sister has been a fan of hunky guys/mediocre shows, including fantasy lite, since she was a teenager) but all I got was blank stares.

Ooh, ToP! Let me find something. Yes. Here we go.

No time to crop it or clean it up…

Edit: I really wish someone would make some black bikini briefs for the boys. I've tried the blank trunks, but they cover up way too much hip. Anyone? Anyone? If I had a clue about graphics/toolset I'd do it myself.

@Yankee23 and @alisgirl -- Yay for the Robin Hobb love!
I'm looking forward to the Rainwilds series (now in progress, but I'll wait until the whole thing is published) but I just couldn't get in to the Soldier Son trilogy. The first book was good, but the second one was so relentlessly depressing that I didn't finish it before it had to go back to the library, and I didn't bother to renew it.

***
On in-topic news, a confession: last night, my male mage let Logain live. Holy crap, I knew Alistair was going to be upset, but not... THAT upset. I felt really horrible.
I decided to play it through, though, because I don't think I'm ever going to be able to do it again. So sad! It makes the most political sense IMO to use Logain to destroy the dragon, but I really did feel like I'd let down a friend. Never doing it again.

***
Edit to add @alisgirl -- games are so much more immersive than tv - you get to participate, decide the outcomes! I totally agree with you. But none of my RL friends play either, and they do have a tendency to look at me like I'm an enormous closet nerd.
(Which I guess I am!)

I haven't done that yet but was thinking of doing it next playthrough (just because I must try all options)

*spoiler*
Last playthrough was as as male dalish who romanced Morrigan and did the Dark Ritual (haven't been able to get my mind around making Ali do it yet) and then made Alistair marry Anora (who I hate).. don't think I've ever been so happy to finish a playthrough! At least I hardened him this time so they were good rulers together. It was kinda cute when he tried to hold her hand as they walked up to be 'married' or for the 'coronation' or whatever. Is this the same thing that happens as a HFN? (sigh, so jelous of those that play on the PC with mods.. I heard there is a wedding mod?)

I want to do a female drawf that romances Zev but I don't know if she will be able to resist Ali's charms.. I know *I* can't...

@ginger—Yeah, I haven't really watched TV since I was 17. Games are soooooooo much better. The sad thing is I'm only a pseudo-nerd, flirting at the periphery, and my family think I'm a complete weirdo.

@april—I only just saw that clip since I've never married him to Anora, and that one-second gesture (his offer/her rebuff) broke my heart. To me, tiny little things like that are the brilliance of this game, and the kind of thing that is COMPLETELY NONEXISTENT in DA2. Even the way Alistair responds when you invite him to the party—that "Yes," the way he bows his head, placing his fist across his heart—says so much about his sense of duty and loyalty. And that's *just adding him to your damned party.*

@AbsoluteApril - you could always romance Zev with a male dwarf instead... that way there's no Alistair temptation. Especially if you want to try keeping Logain.

I've just done that with a male mage, and it was kind of fun to roleplay. (I figured he ended up in Zev's bed kind of by accident, out of "happy to be alive" post-battle energy, and then fell in love as Zev started to open up. It was fun.)

For Alismut Thursday…no, it doesn't look exactly like him, but oh, well. I like to think this is the man Alistair could become if he spent enough time with the right (wrong?) woman.

/lurk

You aren't the only one.

My female Elf mage romanced hardened Alistair, married him off to the Ice Queen, recuited Loghain and then let Loghain kill Archie, because everyone says that is "the best ending". Well... apart from how amazingly hot  Alistair is when he's doing all that yelling and hating,  I was so upset by the time the epilogue slides rolled, I had to go back to the Landsmeet to not arrange the marriage or spare Loghain. At that point giving in to epic tragedy was the logical conclusion, so I Kinged Alistair, let him dump the Warden, got him to agree to the Ritual, backed out of the Ritual and did the Ultimate Sacrifice. :crying:

My next Warden? She was the first one I've ever given a truly happy ending.

Pseudo older nerd here, yeah and I have some very formal qualifications so my previous colleagues thought I was an out-and-out nutter... As for my mother... My brothers are a bit weird too so that's OK. My husband likes me as I am... My dog loves me... And you guys I can share with... All is well in the world.

That's a good way to put it.

@tsm—I'm going to have to marry him to Anora soon and experience the hate. And screencap like hell. :wub:

@alisgirl - you'll have to spare Loghain, too, for the hottsexxyangryhate. B/c his reaction to just marrying Anora is more like "Meh..." Though IIRC, he does get sort of pissy if you push back when he's dumping you.

I think I remember seeing that once, though I didn't save it. And his reaction to Loghain. I'm putting off hardening him so I can play through all the possibilities and make a chart linking to movies of all the outcomes…but somehow my projects never get completed, ha ha.

There are so many resources that should exist for fanfic writers but don't, like that chart and crib notes for The Stolen Throne and The Calling.

It was such a cute little gesture of him to make and I felt bad when she brushed his hand away (grr Anora.. die!)  I love how they flesh out the nuances of characters in this game. I've read a lot of the threads basically saying DA2 is a DAO-lite and not nearly as good...  I'll still buy it though but knowing I don't get to continue the warden's story is dissapointing. Plus the few vids I saw on youtube... what they heck did they do to Alistair's face? He just looks... off..

Originally I didnt like the idea of male dwarf x Zev but... this could work, especially with keeping Logain. I was planning my dwarf commoner run to be very anti-mage and somewhat anti-elf all out to better himself and doesn't really care for what is 'right', I could see Zev appreciating a strong barbaric male dwarf.. hmm. Thanks! Plus.. best of all... no Alistair temptation. I still can't bring myself to be rude to him or make fun of him but I know I will need to just to get some eye brow action

I usually flip a coin to decide whether he gets hardened or not. Only exceptions were the mage playthrough b/c I knew I was going to king him, and unhardened King Alistair is just... wrong, and my Dalish, who didn't harden him so she could boss him around. For his own good, of course. (Tamlen not listening to her, and the aftermath, was pretty traumatic.)

Oh! and my evil Cousland Queen o' Ferelden, who didn't harden him so she could call the shots. Mwahaha!

@AbsoluteApril -- Zevran is nothing if not pragmatic - he's probably the least judgy companion. He'll be kind of annoyed if you dis on elves too much, but you can always make it up with +1 approval every time you take him to the tent. :)

@theskymoves -- I didn't harden Alistair for my mage playthrough but I wish I had. Unhardened anger was shouty but still a bit 'kicked puppy', and he didn't stick around to marry Anora, even though I'd arranged it ahead of time.
As it is, though, I haven't quite finished off the archdemon but I've already started off a Cousland rogue so I can try to get that king and queen happy ending. Or happy-ish ending, anyway.

I'm sooo disorganized with my play throughs! I have three different ones going at the same time...I've only had one complete so far. Meh. I kind of like switching back and forth...it never gets old that way, but it can be difficult to get back into the right character's mind set. I'm so happy to have the skip the fade mod!

This was probably brought up before I joined, but I was just curious as to everyone's favorite ending and why? King Alistair vs. Warden Alistair? I, personally, prefer Warden Alistair...I dunno...something about going off to rebuild the Grey Wardens, traveling, adventures, fighting, etc is just more appealing than having a romance with a king...probably explains why my Warden ALWAYS has to share a passionate kiss with Alistair after a particularly difficult/gory battle.

For my Zev-romancing city elf, I spared Loghain (who died killing the archdemon) and married Alistair to Anora. Won't do that again. I distinctly remember thinking after the Landsmeet, "Oh, this is not going to be pretty." And I cringed all the way into the room where Alistair was and throughout that entire conversation.

And he is so bitterly sarcastic at the coronation party-"Your adoring public awaits." Ouch. And it made the ending kind of depressing, because Tabris still had Zev but now her good friend was furious at her.

My current elf mage is romancing Zev and having Alistair remain a Warden, so I have a playthrough with female Warden and nonromanced Warden Alistair. Eventually I'll make a male Amell who'll also leave him a Warden, so I'll finally have a male Warden playthrough where Alistair's not king. And I just made a male Cousland for Morrigan who'll end up with the Warden-Commander ending. That's not going to be a happy story.

Does anybody else do this-have a dozen different playthroughs so you end up with pretty much every possible combination of results? The only thing I never do is keep the Anvil.

I like the character arc of him being king, but also like that he can
get to stay a Warden, since he's had the burden of being Maric's
illegitimate son hanging over him his entire life. Post-game in the
Wardens, his heritage wouldn't matter.

I don't go for being a mistress, so Alistair ends up as king during playthroughs when he's not romanced/the Warden's male/the Warden's a HNF. The one exception was my mage who got dumped at the Landsmeet and then did the US because she hated blood magic, especially after the Jowan fiasco. Morrigan got thrown out right after she said, "Some might call it that."

@at tsm: Shriek Tamlen gets me choked up. Every. Single. Time. I think it's because during my first playthrough, I had a female Dalish elf. The Urn of Sacred Ashes quest comes up, she meets the Tamlen spirit, and I go, "Oh, I guess the corruption from the mirror killed him. So that's what happened to him :(."

And then I went back to camp.

Yeah. From now on, shriek Tamlen encounter happens first.

Personally I like Alistair as king (hardened, of course). Probably because the only real playthrough I've done is a HNF and she felt that the Theirin line needed to go on, and be on the throne. I keep thinking of Brenna as "my story" if you know what I mean, but I'm going to branch out. I actually started a mage and a dalish elf just to see what it was like.

@LT123 I think I'm going to do that myself actually - do all the combinations of endings just to see them.

I've got this story in my head of how I want it to be (which prompted me to start writing fanfic!) and this is really what I have in my head now. >.< When I played my mage and Alistair was flirting with her, I was like "nuuuuuuuuuuuuu you love Brenna - not this mage!!" lol

Or maybe this just makes me weird! :P

@java—I'm having the same problem. Too many playthroughs and leaving them half-finished. I wish I could just play full-time and get them all finished, GRRRRR.

@ambra—Not weird at all, believe that is called your "canon" story…

@ginger - I'll have to give kicked puppy shouty a whirl once I've thoroughly explored hottsexxyangryhate shouty. Dang! I don't even care about missing out on the romance schtick, all I want is for him to yell and pout. I also have a happy ending non-evil gonna-be-Queen Cousland rogue in queue, after a Templar hating b!tchy Amell (my Alistair hate run!) and then another playthrough with my canon City Elf - I'll get that one right if it kills me!

@java - Warden Alistair would be my first choice, though if circumstance dictates otherwise, I will reluctantly settle for hardened solo King Alistair... I rarely finish a game with an active romance (especially if I'm planning on taking the PC into DAA) and I tend to believe unattached Alistair is going to be happier as a Warden. I should probably try the King/mistress ending someday... the one time I bothered to jump through those dialogue hoops, I broke up with him in Fort Drakon, right before the Archdemon battle.

@LT - Shriek Tamlen... so sad! I was totally in love with playing Dalish, even did a bunch of character development for a Dalish mage playthrough. Tamlen, and crazy DA2 Merrill disabused me of that notion!

~tsm, relurking for real, edited b/c I cannot get the game to reinstall and those things are never going to happen :crying:

@theskymoves - I suspect angry shouty is much sexier than kicked puppy shouty. I won't be playing THAT route again. But if you want to do it for completion's sake...

Working on my Cousland rogue, built specifically for Alistair romance, but she keeps wanting to insult him for being whiney. I guess when most of your family just died, his coming completely unstrung over Duncan is a *little* less sympathetic. I'm sure they'll work it out.

Meanwhile, I'm sure she's noticed that he's gorgeous when upset...

(I just turned all my graphics settings to high - running with no problems so far even though the game wanted me to start on low settings, which doesn't make much sense to me? anyway I'm so glad I did, because this is now my desktop background.)

Not weird at all! My first playthrough with the elf shown as my icon, she romanced Ali and he sacraficed himself to save her (so sad!) so then I started up a human noble female so I could marry him... but as soon as she started flirting with him I said 'this is just not right, he loves my elf mage!' and gave up that playthrough. Now I'm doing other playthroughs (as males mostly) so I can get it out of my head and then start some new romancing-Ali ones later when I'm 'over it'.

@theskymoves - You can't get it to reinstall?! I'm so sorry! Ugh, the things I went through to get it installed on mine...I never want to go through that mess again (it involves corrupted installer disk, dealing with BioWare tech support for HOURS, a download that wouldn't show up, and eventually exchanging it at Game Stop). I really hope you can get it to work again!

@gingergen - I am so jealous! I have to run the game on the lowest settings possible on my computer! I'm completely missing out on how much more amazing this game can be...I really need a new computer! I love the screenshot, btw!

All of the NPC characters on my game have black eyes (except Morrigan). My Wardens don't, only because I use an add on when creating them. I have a feeling this has to do with being forced to run the game on such low settings...at least I'm hoping that's the case and not some mod conflict that I'll have to sort out when I get a new computer...ideas anyone?

@java_jive_girl -- yup, the low graphics settings is what causes the black eyes. I had them too until I poked at my settings. Weird how it defaulted me to low on a brand new computer, but I re-set them and so far it's working fine. The game crashed once, but I don't think it was graphics related (and I was still on medium settings at the time).

I sympathize with your old computer woes -- I really wanted to play Dragon Age when it came out in 2009 but didn't have a computer that could run it at the time. I spent AGES downloading the character creator, only to find it wouldn't play at ALL. Sadness! So when I finally replaced it a few months ago, I knew it was only a matter of time before I ended up here...

@ginger - Mmmmm. Post-Ostagar Flemeth's Hut vulnerable Alistair!  He's on my laptop:

Image IPB

The way he is lit in that scene kills me. I would fire off more screenshots during the Ostagar/Korcari Wilds/Lothering arc than during the entire rest of the game, simply because the light is so beautiful.

@java - Yep, it flat-out refuses to install. I've never been able to use the DVD, being one of the "lucky" folks with hardware that can't read the disc. The EA store version from earlier this year that I was running until recently didn't uninstall cleanly, and the current Origins version will download but then it locks up during the install, presumably because of all the junk left behind in the registry by the earlier install. I probably need to edit my registry manually and remove all of the garbage references before trying again. Happy happy joy joy. Sad part is, I'm a 99% satisfied customer, but installation-wise, DAO has been the most problematic software I've encountered in 25 years... 'tis actually easier to get ancient Myst franchise titles up and running on a Win98 emulator. Grrrr. /rant
