@Rage - Oh, Maker, have mercy, I laughed so much. Thank you so much for that. The buildup for the...climax was quite...stimulating. Especially since you described it so well that it was easy for me to bring up the visuals in my head.  *retreats into happy place*:wub::wub:

Thank you, my good man. Thank you so much.

EDIT:
Hey, it's page 1400!
All right, seemed a bit appropriate, considering the lack of shirt and pants in the story :

tklivory---someone mentioned in that thread the same thinking, that the "iconic" characters would be the draw, and my response was that isn't Dragon Age iconic enough. I used some examples of other franchises, but the biggest example in Star Wars. Not all of the SW media center around Darth Vader or Luke Skywalker...my feeling is that DA should follow the same idea if they truly want to expand on the world of DA instead of focusing on a handful of characters.

and thank you. It was written about a week ago, and I wanted a little commentary in my stories about the amount of attention Alistair gets from the ladies...and what better way to do it than he gets chased by them in the game like a rock star. :D

So.... it's NOT a canonization(that's a word right?)?

What the **** are they doing then?

if it's NOT a canonization then it's just a waste of time.

On another topic..... WHY ARE THEY DOING THIS?

From what i gather it's a story which happens in Mr.Gaider's personal playthrough, so to speak. I think it's interesting, in the same way it's interesting to hear about what happens to Alistair and everyone else in other people's games, even though my own playthrough (and the ideas of what happened afterwards) can be completely different.

I'd imagine the bits like secret behind dragons, what Antiva looks like and the people shown there are going to be universal pieces of lore.

So overall, doesn't really feel like waste of time, imo.

it's an original idea, i suppose, but to me, it's just a waste of time.

if this is NOT a canonization, then explore the world, flesh it out, rather than make stupid Fan services (because Alistair, Varric and Isabela (and possibly Zevran) together in Antiva doesn't sound like Fan service AT ALL).

i mean, what's next?
Morrigan, Anders and Sebastian take over the world?
Leliana, Merrill and Wynne go shopping?

Where does it end!!!!!?!?!?!?!!?

@Rage - Totally agree.  In my ideal world, DA would be more like Thieves World was back in the day - anthologies told by different authors of different characters all in the same setting and all relying on the same lore.  It would certainly avoid character 'canon' issues, yet still allow cameos for those who truly want it.  Star Wars still used the main characters for too long in their book collections (*shudders thinking about Chewbacca's death*) so I think that the Thieves World analogy is more akin to what I (and I think you) would like to see.

Cautious excitement... I'm trying to stick to cautious excitement... Because *channels Flemeth* I want to believe...

Hey, I could fill my prompt with this... Hmmmmmm...

Oh, I agree, tklivory. It's like the SW games. For the BW they went back in time with new characters completely, or in the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight series used a new protagonist with new antogonists. There were some cameo's between the different media with them, but not usually as the main focus. And I agree the books went too far too long with the same main group from the movies...I think it's why I like the games and don't read the books as much until much later in the timeline.

Edit: It's been a while since I had new Alistair.  Here's King Alistair:

He's writing a story set in "his" IP, so it's not fan fiction but "just" fiction Image IPB  But otherwise yes, i think it's similar. If there's a difference here, it's that since he's the lead writer behind the IP, all lore included in the story is bound to be sanctioned and official. So the facts and characters introduced in this piece are likely to pop up in other people's actual fan fiction, down the road.

My prompt fill:  I Believe in You  (in a rare sentimental writing mood)

The wind blew over the hill, flattening the soft green grass against its contours. The faint scent of burgeoning spring flew with it, carrying the smells of new life and new hope. Birdcalls filled the air as the sun shone brightly from a bright blue sky marred only by a small array of fluffy white cotton. It was a beautiful day in Fereldan, a rare spring day of no clouds, no rain, and no chilling wind. If one stood on the top of the hill and looked east, the beautiful idyll presented would almost convince the observer that nothing of significance had occurred since the previous spring.

A sharp turn of the head, however, presented a completely different view.

Elissa stood on top of the hill, staring west towards Highever Castle. The stains of battle marked it clearly, even from this distance, and several gaping holes pockmarked the high walls. Though work had been progressing steadily in the months since Fergus had returned home to begin the rebuilding process, it was obvious that the task of removing Rendon Howe’s unprovoked dishonor of the Cousland estate would be years in the making. Sighing, she rolled her shoulders in an attempt to ease some of the tension that had tightened them while surveying the damage defacing her childhood home.

A pair of strong hands found her shoulders and began a gentle yet sensual massage. “Something you need, my dear?” Alistair murmured into her ear. The combination of his deep voice and probing fingers worked their magic on her nerves, and Elissa sighed as she relaxed backwards into his chest. His hands released her shoulders, and she found herself wrapped in a welcome embrace.

They stared at the castle silently for a few more moments before Alistair said, “So, did Fergus agree?”

Smiling slightly, Elissa nodded. “Yes.” A mischievous sparkle entered her eyes as she said, “He said I could have anywhere I wanted as long as I would stay for a longer visit this time.” Enjoying the warmth of his body wrapped around her, she leaned her head back, turning it slightly to look at him. “At least he doesn’t have to worry about an extra guest room for you. I’m perfectly willing to share mine.”

Alistair grinned, a hungry glint lighting his eyes. Taking her unspoken cue, he lowered his face and seized her upturned lips with a ferocious passion that hadn’t dimmed one whit since the first time he had claimed a kiss.  When her breath started to come in short pants, he finally relented and released her. Running one of his hands lightly over her flushed face, he murmured in a low voice, “Was it too soon for that?”

She sighed contentedly. “I don’t know.” She grinned coyly at him before gently pushing herself away from him. “I need more testing to be sure.”

He growled in mock anger and reached for her, but abruptly stopped as he focused on something behind her. Turning, she saw that Fergus was walking up the hill – slowly – to join them.

Frowning, Elissa hurried down to Fergus and quickly put an arm under his. “I said I was coming right back,” she said. “You didn’t need to come up here.”

Fergus leaned onto his sister’s arm. “I thought I’d come see it for myself,” he said as he struggled to catch his breath. “After all, this is very important to you, and I want to make sure it is perfect.”

Watching her brother closely, Elissa waited without comment until he had his breath under control before asking, “Are you sure you should be out here?”

Fergus looked away, gaze coming to a rest upon the untouched green swards of Highever. Elissa frowned slightly as she noticed the deeper lines around eyes and the addition of more grey hairs than a man his age warranted. His time spent as an invalid during the Blight marked him, and although he was better than when she had first seen him after the Blight, he was not well by any standard. “I’ll get better, little sister. Stop worrying.” He looked back at her, brown eyes alight with good humor. “Besides, how do you know I’m not simply trying to give your barbarian sufficient time to ravish you?”

Punching his arm lightly, she grinned at him. “Beast.”

“Brat,” he replied. “Ah, Elissa, I have missed you.” He nodded towards Alistair. “Come. Show me.”

They moved towards Alistair, discussing the progress of the castle’s rebuilding until they reached the top of hill. Once there, conversation died as they took in the sight of the pristine land beyond. Elissa took deep breaths of the intoxicating spring air, reveling in the scents of honeysuckle and lavender as they filled her lungs and soothed her anxiety.

Fergus gripped her arm tightly. “I can see why you chose this location,” he said to Alistair, his eyes growing distant. “The vista is most serene.”

Alistair nodded, his own face thoughtful. “Peace is never a constant companion for a Warden.” His hazel eyes grew distant as memories came to him. “I want his monument to offer him in death what was never his in life.”

Elissa released her brother’s arm and moved to stand in front of her love. She saw the echo of the old pain in his eyes and instinctively reached up to caress his cheek. Her movement drew his gaze down to meet hers, and he smiled, a sweet expression that warmed her from within. “I’m fine, my love.” Taking her hand possessively in his own, he turned to address Fergus. “I believe this is exactly what Duncan would have wanted,” he said in a firmer tone. “I wish to thank you again, Teryn, for your generous offer.”

Fergus chuckled. “As if I could say no to my sister. She can be very determined when she wants to be.”

“I believe you're right.  Thank the Maker for that,” Alistair replied with a grin, almost without thinking. Seeing Fergus’ eyebrow rise up, he quickly added, “For Duncan’s sake, of course.”

“Of course.”  Fergus stood a moment more looking towards the east, then sighed and turned back to the castle. “I need to get back. The Seneschal has some plans he wants me to approve. His keeps saying that we have a wonderful opportunity to fix things.” He threw one last mischievous look at his sister. “Don’t worry, I won’t wait up for you.”

She smiled fondly at him. “Brat.”

“Beast,” he replied automatically. “See you for breakfast, then?” Without waiting for an answer, he started heading back towards the Castle.

Elissa watched her brother walk slowly away and sighed. “I wish he wasn’t so…fragile.”

Alistair began lightly stroking her arm. “You’re worried about leaving him when you go to the Amaranthine, aren’t you?”

Shivering beneath his touch, she forced herself to concentrate on the matter at hand. “Yes. Anora insists that I need to go to Vigil’s Keep to take matters into my own hands, and of course I also have my duties as Warden Commander that I need to attend to.”

Alistair nodded, face pensive. His eyes turned to the retreating back of Fergus, then turned back to her. “Well, I haven’t been summoned to Vigil’s Keep, and someone needs to make sure that Duncan’s memorial is built properly.”

A slow smile crept across her face. “Oh, Alistair. Would you? Stay here and help him while he finishes recovering?” She hugged him tightly. “Thank you. I felt like I was abandoning him.”

His arms tightened around her before slowly pushing her out to arms’ length. He scrutinized her for a few silent moments before reaching out and delicately tracing the outer shell of her ear in a slow, sensuous motion. “You must know that I would do anything my lady requires of me,” he said in a low voice. Moving his hand to cup her cheek, he smiled – that wonderful slow curling of his lips that never failed to send a shiver down to the tips of her toes – and said huskily, “Maker’s breath, but you’re beautiful.” He gently pulled her forward until they chests were pressed against each other. “I am a lucky man.” He grinned suddenly, like a little boy who had found the cookie jar. “Besides, you don’t need to leave for another four weeks. I believe we should spend the time searching for a suitable method of thanks for my unparalleled generosity. What do you think?”

She raised an eyebrow. “I believe that’s an excellent idea.”

So, two birds with one stone.

I'm just very skeptical about this whole thing. Yes, I am interested in finding out more about Alistair's mother, if that is what this is about, but I really don't see how the King of Fereldan would end up with Varric and Isabela traipsing around a foreign nation.

It's very easy for officially released content to take on the appearance of cannon, no matter how much they deny it. It seems to me that the better way of telling this story would have been in some post DAO dlc. There is way too much potential here to negate player's choices...right down to the existence of their warden.

@Yankee - the rumors abound.  Is it about Alistair's mother?  Is it about Maric?  (twisted minds think that the mother is the witch of the wilds, but I will refrain from such blasphemy here;))

I asked this somewhere else, but... where did Maric's ship get lost at sea?  Would that even be a possibility for the story?

If i'm not mistaken, even in DAO epilogues Alistair is mentioned as being far from the "sit in the castle and rule" kind of king. If such opportunity popped up for him to sneak out somewhere, he'd probably relish it...

it may seem like it, but theres a Difference between, actual importance for characters (and thus, character developement), and fan service.

this looks like Fan service, why?
because, why on earth would these three characters meet just like that?

Actual importance with a character would be something like, "I Have to go here, i need to learn/found/etc something, and these 2 are the only ones who know and can help me".
while Fanservice, is this "Oh, i gotta go here, and i found these 2 on the road so they're helping me out"

THAT is fanservice, and that is what this looks like.

Perhaps DG will prove me wrong and he'll actually manage to make this coherent (although i don't think i'll even read this, no interest at all), but he'll have it REALLY hard, particularly because how would Alistair know about Varric?
or he's whereabout?
same with Isabela.

I imagine that's something the comic itself will explain Image IPB

It's not like they haven't met already -- Alistair can not only meet but even sleep with Isabela in DAO, and Isabela meets and then spends five+ years with Varric in DA2. Neither of these being really fan service. The whole trip could be as simple as Isabela bringing the news leading to Antiva to Alistair in the first place, and then either taking Varric with them because she likes him, or Varric tagging along for the same reason.

I don't see fan service here at all. We don't have any idea when this takes place, other than that it's after Alistair is king. We know that Alistair was in Kirkwall after taking the throne and met with Hawke. There's no reason that he couldn't have met Varric at that time, introduced by Hawke, and met Isabella again.

Whatever Alistair is doing in Antiva, I rather doubt he's travelling as the king of Ferelden. That would involve entourages and such, something he'd likely rather avoid while investigating something. He'd need to get himself there, probably sneakily (Isabella and the big boat she has no doubt acquired). Maybe he wants an archer as back up, maybe Varric is with Isabella, or maybe Varric is on other business when they meet, but Alistair would know that Hawke valued Varric's abilities.

I can think of any number of plotlines that could put this group together, really, depending on what it is that Alistair is investigating, and any time he wants to get somewhere outside a kingly tour, Isabella would be his logical choice. She's the only shady sailor he knows.

Edit: And tmp is completely correct. It could be just that simple. Isabella and Varric bring news that they think will interest Alistair, in hopes of a reward, and he says 'let's go,' more than happy to get out of the palace. In fact, their mutual obsession with profit and footloose nature make them the most likely characters to wind up on someone else's venture.

From the codex entry for King Maric's Helm:

"King Maric Theirin, widely regarded as a hero by the Fereldan people for
liberating the country from Orlesian rule, disappeared at sea while en
route to Wycome in 9:25 Dragon. He was to attend a gathering of the

Well that is exactly what I intent to seize it for, tbh. If it brings me some lore and interesting facts I can use for my own canon, why not. It is the reason why I still follow the DA2 DLC, after all, even when I long have stopped playing this game. You Tube FTW :innocent:

Also great fill, tkl. I'm happy to see a Cousland not having become queen, for a change. There are too few F!Warden Cousland (without being queen) FF's out there. Seriously.

Tsm, stay please. Who had told you you would offend someone when you are saying your opinion?  After all, this is a forum's purpose. I for myself am happy to see some discussion going here again. It is a nice change from the picture only posting. Not that I dislike any pictures of Alistair, but you know it's fun to see the thread (momentarily) so lively again.

... Just to add to Errant's post. There is a clear precedent here: Maric at the beginning of "The Calling" who leaves Denerim to join the Warden's ill-fated expedition. Why should Alistair do any less especially if he has a strong co-ruler such as Cous or even Anora?

___________________________________________________________________________

The warmth from the fire was comforting. Brenna sat on a log near the flames, hoping they would hasten in their warmth-spreading ways. Maker, I am a simpleton. Warmth-spreading ways, indeed. The days had been growing steadily shorter and colder as winter settled on them. She tilted her head up, eyeing the trees that surrounded them, discomfited by the idea that she would spend winter in a tent. Perhaps the better word is concerned. Should she be? Many people spent their whole lives in tents. The Dalish did so. But Brenna had not, not ever. The pampered daughter of a Teyrn. How she had hated being called that, had tried so hard to not be that person. And yet, here she was, worrying about what winter would feel like without stone walls to protect her.

Hadn’t she signed up for this? It was difficult to remember now that she’d left the comfort … and the warmth of Castle Redcliffe for this. She’d begged Aedan to let her come, and when that failed had obstinately claimed she was coming, like it or not. A baby, a naive baby that had no idea what she was getting herself into.

That which does not kill you, makes you stronger.

And –

A Cousland always does their duty.

She held that last thought close. It was a mantra her father had said many times, and one all four Cousland children had always held close. Duty mattered; duty was important – more important than anything.

Aedan needed her, no matter how stubbornly he denied this. Duty had called her to his quest. Small comfort these thoughts brought now, but small was better than none.

Brenna turned her head and caught his profile out of the corner of her eye. It was a sad, lonely one, not unlike the rest of them. Ostagar was still a fresh memory, she could see it in their faces; Aedan would wince once in a while, as if pained by some memory he wished he didn’t have. There appeared to be a plethora of those and each day seemed only to add to them. Blights have never been ended without great sacrifice. But who’s?

She stood up, grabbed the flimsy wooden board and bag of pieces and walked towards him, uncertain. He froze when he saw her approach.

She stopped in front of him and hesitated. “Um, have you ever played chess?”

A hint of a smile was on his lips. “Uh, no, can’t say that I have.”

“Would you … like to learn?” She chewed her bottom lip. Why was she so nervous?

“Uh, sure.” He drew the last word out; it brought a smile to her lips, the first real one in too long. They settled on her log and put the board between their legs. As she was setting the pieces out he said: “Why do I have this feeling I’m going to lose spectacularly?” Brenna’s grin was cheeky in the extreme. “Because you will.” Alistair snorted at that, but said nothing.

After her third win he leaned back and grimaced. “You know you could let me win a couple times… or even once. Boost the ego and all.”

Brenna chuckled. “I do not believe in letting people win.”

“Someone ruined you on that I take it?”

She nodded. “My father.” She made a move. Alistair frowned down at the board. “He taught me to play when I was a girl, and it took me months to finally beat him. He played his best each game, and said that my eventual victory would be that much sweeter if he did, since I would know I beat his best. He was right.”

Brenna smiled at the memory. The day she had beat her father for the first time had been one of her proudest moments. As a reward he had given her a new chess set, inlaid with turquoise and marble – turquoise because it was her favorite color. “It must be because it’s the color of your eyes.” He’d said one day. It was actually because it reminded her of the color of the sea on a clear day. If she closed her eyes she could almost taste the brackishness of it.

Home.

That chess set was probably rubble now, like everything else.

For some reason that hurt more than anything and Brenna closed her eyes, mortified, as she felt her lower lip tremble. That chess set was home. It was her father; large and loud, bluntly honest, with weathered features that hid a large heart. It was her brothers, her sister, her nieces and nephew. It was her mother; gentle, kind, a lively and easy smile with a spine of stone. It was her.

And it was gone, like everything else she’d loved.

She looked up almost instinctively and caught her brother’s eyes.

Almost everything.

“Brenna?”

She turned her attention back to the game and tried not to see the obvious pity in his eyes.

She paused and looked up, meeting his eyes. Perhaps not pity … sympathy? She remembered the smattering of information Isolde had told her of Alistair and realized that he had known loss far greater than her own, but perhaps in a much different way.

She looked down at the board and tried to remember where all his pieces had been. Unable to do so she moved her knight, and leaned back, feeling almost drained.

It was then that she realized – they were all broken in their own way.

Broken things can be fixed, and become part of the tapestry of who we are. Her mother had said that, though she’d been talking about a broken toy to a much younger girl. What matters is not what life brings us, but how we react to it.

She looked back up, and realized Alistair was staring at her intently. She started a bit, and straightened her spine.

“I am so sorry, is it my turn?”

At his nod she looked down at the board again. The smile that crossed her face had little to do with the move she made.

“Checkmate.”

I'm still just really excited about the comic, honestly. I will be getting it as soon as it comes out! I'm excited to see more lore, some of Antiva and especially more Alistair. I might be more excited about Isabella and Varric if I'd played DA2 but I haven't played it yet.
