Wow, those women writers are evil. :P

If Alistair is made King, and if he and the Warden never initiated the romance previously (therefore not causing a breakup after the Landsmeet), would giving Alistair Duncan's Shield afterwards put them into a romance? Therefore bypassing the no-mistress thing if he's unhardened?

Edit: ToP, Ummm.... not mine, but one of my favorites.:wub::wub:

Precisely.  The last *if* the flag hasn't been activated and *if* you have used up all other dialogue options with non-romantic options.  There are several lines that will activate romance (if you choose the right dialogue options), but the last given opportunity in terms of chronology (assuming you've expended all your dialogue options with him) is giving him the shield.

It is true that you can 'save' certain lines ("Has anyone ever told you how handsome you are?", as an example) until the very last minute before entering Redcliffe after the Landsmeet, but enter Redcliffe Castle with no romance activated, and no further opportunities exist to activate the romance flag unless you leave Redcliffe Castle to go to camp.  (I will fire up a game and check that to make sure, though, and update.)

Also, it is possible to ask him the "Has anyone ever told you how handsome you are?" *without* activating the romance.  For all that some people complain that it is hard to *not* initiate a romance with Alistair, it is really easier to tick him off then to turn him on.

I'm firing up an old save right now to check on that. ;)  Will update once I figure that out, as the toolset could *not* quite answer that.

Edit:
I'll see what it does for both King and GW choices.  It may take a little bit, though I think I have the perfect character for it.  (She went through Leliana first, then fell in love with Zev, then finally ended up with Alistair before getting rejected and did a US.  Tough RP, but I fully intend to write her story up, as she was a totally fascinating character in my head.)

I'm one of those, I admit it... Nomatter how hard and logical and even cruel I make my Wardens, when it comes to Alistair they turn into puddles of mush, and cannot help but saying something sweet in response to his ramblings and -bam! romance initiated, and before they know it Alistair is swooping in for a kiss.:wub::devil::wub:

Well, that's why you're here, right?

So I played around in my game.  It looks like that absolute cutoff point beyond which you can't initiate the romance is entering Redcliffe Castle after the Landsmeet.  Once you enter there, Alistair can no longer engage in normal conversation because you are forced to fly solo, and you can't leave the castle to go back to camp.  You can start a romance with him at any point *until* you enter the Castle for the endgame because you can engage him in conversation.

Now, given that, I still don't know if it activates the 'mistress' slide in the Epilogue if he's King at that point, because it turned out that in my save my girl had both Zevran and Alistair in a state of "Love" prior to the Landsmeet (naughty girl!), so I'm unsure if you can bypass the Mistress angle that way.  Although judging from the toolset, it is possible to re-start the relationship with Alistair after the Landsmeet *if* you never got to Adore/Love and didn't hard-stop the relationship (there are several responses to his conversations that cool down the relationship but don't cancel the romance flag) or engage in extensive nookie. (only kissing, in other words)

One thing I have never done is see if the romance can be initiated *after* the Epilogue (because that is supposed to happen before the final battle), but since Bioware recommends you always use the automatic save "post-coronation" for imports, there's probably a reason why you shouldn't experiment with that if you want to import the character to another game.

That was kind of fun, actually, and I got some good screenshots for Thursday along the way.

EDIT:
D'oh, forgot about the Fort Drakon part of the game!  Because you can talk to him normally there, you could technically initiate romance, but because you can't go back to camp, you wouldn't be able to have tent time. :?  And that would also mean that a) one of you were going to die, or B) he lost his virginity to Morrigan and you ran off with him afterwards...  Not my choice of timing to start a relationship, I think.

That's a lot of great information. Thank you! :wizard:

I agree, starting the romance during the last battle in Denerim would not be too great. If the Warden breaks it off with Alistair during the middle of the game, can she re-initiate it with future lines, or is it that once you say "we need to end this" that's it for the rest of the game?

And can you do that to any of the other love interests, where you break up with them and then re-initiate? Or is that not an option.

Short answer: Alistair can't be reinitiated if you dump him, but might be reinitiated if he dumps you (still working on verifying that, it might be a bug).   Zevran and Leliana can be cut off and reinitiated if they are cut off in a certain way.

Long answer:

It all depends in what line you use to break up with them.  There's a flag for each LI called 'ROMANCE_CUT_OFF'.  If you deactivate the Romance *and* set the 'ROMANCE_CUT_OFF' flag, then you can't reinitiate the romance with any of them.  If you deactivate the Romance flag, but the 'ROMANCE_CUT_OFF' isn't set, then it is possible to start the romance again, and a line appears when you talk to them that allows you to do so.

There are two ways the 'ROMANCE_CUT_OFF' switch can get set - either by rebuffing a flirtatious line with the intention to kill the character's interest *before* any Romance is initiated, or by having 'the talk' in which you are forced to choose between one LI and another.  And even then, I've found, the 'ROMANCE_CUT_OFF' switch can be selectively cut off.  If, for example, you talk to Alistiar *first* when both he and Zevran are at Adore/Love and tell him you choose Alistair, Zevran will take it gracefully, but the 'ROMANCE_CUT_OFF' doesn't *have* to be set depending on your dialogue choice.  If you talk to Zevran first, however, the 'ROMANCE_CUT_OFF' is set no matter what dialogue you choose and you can't reactivate with Zevran.  The same thing can happen with Leliana.  However you can only "DUMP" (yup, that's from the toolset ) each character for someone else only once.  In other words, you only get one chance to reactivate after ending the romance, and only if you gently broke the relationship rather than harshly broke the relationship.

The only people you can't dump are Alistair and Morrigan.  If you choose someone else over them, that's it - you can't reinitiate the romance, and a 'ROMANCE_CAN_NOT_RESTART' flag or 'ROMANCE_CUT_OFF' flag gets set.  If you merely don't progress the relationship, have no other LI's, and then wait until after the Landsmeet to get to Adore/Love levels then you can progress the relationship to Adore/Love

In addition to the planned system above, there are also bugs. You might want to Google for bugs on the XBox 360 relating to relationship flags.  I remember once before starting modding like there was no tomorrow, I was playing a game where I had flirted with Leliana but ended on good terms, and then became Alistair's fiancee (HNF).  In the last talk with the companions before the DR, Leliana acted very hurt that I had chosen Alistair, and I was like, 'What?  You asked me how he was in bed!'  It was a bug.

Man, that toolset is like a sinkhole.  Always finding stuff in it I didn't know about.

Sounds like it! I could get very lost in there. I love finding all those little things though. And finding bugs and glitches.

Alistair sacrificed himself 2 days ago for my Warden. I was surprised to get a kiss before he killed the Archdemon. I thought that was a mod thing and only for the PC. It was a very nice surprise (even if it was a little glitchy - placement wise).

I'm going to start a Mage playthrough now. I'm interested to see how her characeter evolves and how the whole Templar thing (which was never an issue for my other Wardens) will play out with Alistair. Also, I can't wait to get my hands on some of of those spell combination codex entries. :D

You can still trigger the regular conversation in Redcliffe Castle after you get briefing from Riordan and until you enter your room afterwards -- just go straight to Alistair's room and as long as you weren't yet offered the DR, the regular dialogue is accessible.

Thanks for the info!  I didn't try that, I'll admit.  I was jumping around a lot.

Still... That seems a bit cruel of a place to start a romance.  "Hey, I love you, you love me - now go take your virgin ass and sleep with the woman you hate more than any other!"

Creepy...

And, because no Ali pic today is sad, an Ali pic:

Probably. On the other hand, i think it's pretty decent place to give them last chance to get something done together instead of the DR, if they haven't yet -- considering they get to learn it may be literally few last days before one of them dies (or both)

That's such a great picture. I love that quiet spot addition. Much needed peace in a blight ridden Fereldon.

Okay I was thinking about this: Is it just me or does Alistair in the new comic kinda look like Balthier from FF12?

I'm okay with this.  Hottest character in FF12, by *far*.  (Him and Basch.... Ahh, now *that's* a sandwich I can sink my...teeth into)

Thanks for all the pictures. They are delightful. :o:O:devil:

Today, I had one of the most stressful days I have had in a while, and am just beyond glad it's Thursday here on this thread.:wub::wub::wub::wub:

@tklivory - Your Warden is beautiful! Did you make her with the toolset, character creator, both?

....My name is tklivory, and I am a toolset addict...

This was a toolset creation.  I have an *obscene* number of tattoos, scars, hairstyles, eye colors, etc in my toolset...  Shalandra, though not as elaborate as some others visually, is one of my favorite RP's so far.  This is my favorite screenie of her (thus far):

I have some of my other Wardens in this post, but I will be posting more pictures in this thread as time goes on...

And they will not be alone!:devil::devil:

*pops in and looks around* Wow! I haven't had internet for a little over a week and the place really starts getting busy again! Sorry I missed it! *curses Comcast as an ISP*

@tklivory - The hairstyle you have on Alistair reminds me of someone...oh! I know! The character Michael from the tv show "Roswell"...it aired in the late 90's. Anyone else notice this? Or am I the only one here who knows the show? Not exact, but very close. Here:

Edit:  Not the best comparison pic, but the best I could find in a hurry!

*waves*  hey, how ya doin'?:wizard:  Glad you have internet again!

As for the hair, I can't say I know the character (since I watch TV about 1 hour per month, outside of games), but it is to the saint tmp7704 that I owe that hairstyle (thank the Maker!)

And my hubby has that hairstyle  so I'm definitely biased towards it :P
