Here's something I've been trying to wrap my brain around since DA2 came out. If it were possible to have a rivalmance with Alistair, what would that look like? I have trouble seeing Alistair as anything other than a hopeless romantic.

It's been a while, but a few months back I think I gave Morrigan the Tribal necklace because I thought it was one of "hers" and I only got +5 for it. But I could be mistaken.

Morrigan says 'It's a fine gift' and gives +5 for the Tribal Necklace. 

Then I gave it to Alistair and he says ' is that for me wow.'   +5   So apparently it's for anyone.

From what I recall (and this was ages ago) all initial non specialized gifts given when approval is still close to neutral are +5. I could be wrong, but that's what I remember.

I think he would still have been a hopeless romantic in a rivalmance. I bet we would have just gotten to see more of his sexy angry face. Ooo, nice thought.

I think being a hopeless romantic and being in a successful rivalmance is very possible. Some can enjoy and thrive in a rivalry based relationship and be very happy. But I don't think Alistair would enjoy/thrive in that type of situation.

Maybe it's just me (or I'm projecting my own views on him, since I relate to him so much) but I can't see Alistair involving himself in a rivalmance. It would clash with his disposition/personality/wants which seem most comfortable in a frienship based relationship. And if he did get himself into a rivalry based romance, I imagine it would fall apart quickly.

So I have never not made a female cousland to romance alistair and become queen. So I've only ever played a rogue or warrior. So I decided to make a mage. I told myself, I WILL NOT romance alistair. I made it to where you first meet him and I can't helllp it. No one else will ever get romanced in this game at this rate.

Well to be fair this "one incident" includes sparing the man who had killed his family and the person he saw as something close to his father. And also hunted him and his fellow Warden for the crimes he had done. That is something different than being sulky about saving the elves or not. It is (very) personal and hence this decision is non-negotiable for him.

I guess that says it well.

As for a rivalmance? Umm no. Alistair won't fall for a woman who cackles at beating little Mabari puppies or is cold-hearted as ice. It is a reason he is so grossed out by Morrigan, after all. So I can't see how this would ever work.

On a positive note: I'm so happy to see the Alistair nightmare scene being made in a mod, Dahlia

I can imagine it, but I think he wouldn't be happy. But... I don't think anyone would be happy in rivalmance. I knew such couple once - my dad and the guy were classmates. The relationship between him and his wife could be called 'rivalmance', I think.

They were complete opposites; they hated almost everything about the other one; they knew they shouldn't be together, that they're only hurting each other. So they divorced. But then they found out they can't live without each other. So they married again. Everything repeated, of course. So they divorced again... And then married, again. It was only after their THIRD divorce that they really broke up - because their two daughters, by that time already adults, told them that if they ever marry again, they will reject them as parents.
The guy married another woman, but they divorced after two years, when she found out he was cheating her... with his ex.

Rivalmances just don't work.

I looooove him! Has anyone seen the Carte Noir coffee advert that's on at the moment in the UK? The model from there reminds me of Alistair... I hope he makes an appearance as a companion in DA3... i was disappointed by his cameo in DA2... mostly because they him look gross

I start every game telling myself i will romance someone else... but nope... the first time you meet Alistair i'm hooked... again... i can't give him up!

I don't think a rivalmance would work with Alistair. He's pretty solid in his convictions. I can't see him wanting to hang around after you tell him to get over the fact that you killed Connor, or any of the other stuff that pisses him off.

Sometimes it seems like the rivalries (romance or not) in DA2 get a bad rap. It's not about hate or anger nor does it mean that the pc "cackles at beating little Mabari puppies or is cold-hearted as ice." I've done the rivalmances in DA2 more than friendmance and all my Hawkes might as well be mary sues.

I find them more realistic because in a way the rivalmances acknowledge that ppl who respect each other can have differences of opinion and get past them to have a successful relationship.

I would have been very interested to see how a rivalmance could have been handled with Alistair. There are a number of things that the warden can do that Alistair never comments on that could have made great rivalmance convos. Of course some options available the warden could end the relationship but disagreements do not automatically equal incompatibility.

I can see him being in a rivalmance if he is hardend during his quest.  Ok just a sec while I snicker!  Ok done.  I can see it being similar to Fenris rivalmance in DA2.

David Gaider was saying something to effect that Alistair was based on Xander from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Captain Reynolds from firefly both Joss Wheldon characters. What do you think?
