David Gaider was saying something to effect that Alistair was based on Xander from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Captain Reynolds from firefly both Joss Wheldon character. What do you think?

I think it makes sense. I had just recently gotten into Buffy the Vampire Slayer before picking up Dragon Age, and I immediately recognized the snarky sense of humour that Xander was known for. (I guess Captain Reynolds too, though I've never seen Firefly.) Alistair and Xander are both variations of "Alexander," so there you go.

I'm probably going out on a limb here, but Alistair also reminds me of Riley from Buffy Season 4. They're just both really tall, buff and disciplined yet optimistic, trustworthy and reliable military guys (with short, dark blond/light brown hair), and provide the closest thing to a "normal" (or conventional?) relationship the heroine of the story can get. (Not that it's a bad thing, it's just that Slayer and Warden status usually prevents Buffy and F!Warden from pursuing relationships with civilians in-story).

I don't know if the devs intended this, but pairing Alistair with an elf Warden reminds me strongly of Riley and Buffy. A big, muscled, military guy with a short, thin, petite (and potentially blonde) powerhouse of a woman makes me smile every time.

Then Felicia Day who was interviewing David Gaider says she just thought Alistair was Hunky. What was your first impression of Alistair? Needless to say my first impression wasn't Hunky being a guy and all.

It's the self-deprecating, pure-hearted, protective, hopelessly flawed, endearingeventhoughyousometimeswanttopunchhimintheface thing that reminds me of Xander and Mal. Ugh, Riley. I hate that guy.

You need to watch Firefly. Seriously. Do it.

Just wanted to chime in that after seeing Avengers, I'm more convinced than ever that Chris Hemsworth should do Alistair. He even had the scruff Alistair has.

Just sayin'.

And I'm also too embarrassed to admit how many seasons of watching Buffy it took for me to figure out what Xander was short for... *whistle*

Oh, Alistair is definitely way more Xander than Riley. (Again, I was reminded of Xander from his opening conversation with the mage.) I guess what I mean is his physical appearance - muscled human military dude - reminds me a little more of Riley since Xanders was a scrawny normal guy that couldn't participate in most of the fighting.

(My first Warden was a petite blonde elf that wielded two daggers, so having her fight side-by-side with the tall, broad, muscled, disciplined Alistair involuntarily reminded me of scenes where Buffy and Riley fought side-by-side. I don't think I'd be making the comparison otherwise, but there it is.)
Eh, I haven't checked out Firefly for the same reason I haven't checked out Mass Effect - I'm not much of a sci fi gal.  Posted Image

I understand what you mean about Riley. I just hated his character.

Honestly, I wasn't ever really a big sci fi person - although I guess I am now, given how much time I have spent engrossed in stories that happen in space/the future/whatever makes sci fi sci fi. I just like good stories, which is why I love Mass Effect and also why I love Firefly. To me, space is just the setting. The good writing, the story and characters could happen anywhere, and they're what really matter.

Felicia Day mentioned Isabela on her flog today on Geek and Sundry on youtube. I noticed that it's been 7 days since anyone posted so I posted something. Ha, ha. Any Alistair news?

Thanks, you just ruined Lenya/Alistair for me. (Nah, not really. But now I have certain pictures in my head when my Dalish cookie and he fights alongside. Gawd I hated Riley >.< )

I am not much of a Scifi gal myself, but Mass Effect is worth a try. It is pretty easy to overlook its scifi setting as the world and characters itself are awesome and make it -- like DA:O- worth the time. I'm personally more into fantasy myself, but currently I'm all over ME...which is the reason I haven't looked in this thread for AGES. Sorry Alistair :crying:

I was the same way. I love the fantasy setting, but I was never able to get into the space/scifi setting for games. Yet when I tried Mass Effect I got completely absorbed. I think I may even go through it a second time, and try a different build.

Back to Alistair... I just started a Male Noble Dwarf. It's my first male character and first dwarf that I'm taking past the origin story. It will be interesting to see how Alistair acts differently to a friend rather than a romantic interest. There was no way I couldn't romance him when I played a female Warden, so I figured this was the only way. I'm curious to see what decisions my noble dwarf will make and how they will affect Alistair. We shall see.

Same here for Mass Effect. I love Dragon Age and Mass Effect just as much. The game is able to suck you in even if you aren't big on Sci-Fi.

And when it comes to not romancing Alistair, I feel you. I always end up romancing too unless I force myself to play as a male character to make it impossible.

Same here! I've been all over ME too, and it's been a long time since I posted in this thread, and it's been awhile since I actually looked in here. It's also been awhile since I played DA:O... I miss Alistair

Sorry to everyone I ruined Alistair for. I actually never understood all the hatred for Riley--at least before he went nuts with envy in Season 5. Up till then, I thought he was a rather likable character. Alistair still reminds me of his good qualities too, and since Alistair actually likes playing second-fiddle to a stronger fighter, he basically has all of Riley's good relationship and combat qualities with few of the negative ones. (Though he can get moody when things aren't his way...)

Eh, still not convinced. I wasn't interested in ME before I got into DA and I'm still not interested in it now. And anyway, I keep hearing how the Dragon Age franchise is becoming like "Mass Effect with swords" anyway, so now there's REALLY no incentive to try playing it. Why play a scifi first-person shooter with a pre-set character when you can play a fantasy first-person shooter with a pre-set character? Makes all the difference in the world! :D (DA:O, you have been replaced.)

Just a random moment in a recent game with my male elf mage. Can you believe that? Looking right at me, the player, and scowling like that? The nerve of that guy! lol

Actually, ME and DA are kinda dfferent. The battle system for one thing is vastly different, and you can make your own character, y'know, just like in DA. Give the games a chance. If I was forced to choose between which francise I prefer, I would choose ME. I think people are just saying they're the same because they both have the "multiple story outcomes" - ME just had it first. (ME1 came out in 2007, DA:O came out in 2009). I'd call ME a third-person-shooter/RPG hybrid-that-actually-works-beautifully.

Seriously, though, play ME. You WON'T be disappointed.

@Faerunner lol... No idea. I was actually just doing a screenshot of my own character, but Alistair was there behind him... just scowling at me like that... Maybe it's as simple as that he doesn't like being photographed? Mm, no, not with a nose quite that snarled... and besides he seems to like getting in screenshots... *sigh* I think he gets this way when no one romances him...

I don't mind the setting of Mass Effect, or even that it's a shooter, but I don't find its characters as engaging as those in DA:O. And I really hate the paraphrasing and the paragon/renegade scale.

They might have started out different, but I keep hearing from fans who have played both games that a lot of the dramatic changes in DA2 came from ME. (Voiced protagonist, 3 option dialgue wheel, the paraphrasing in the wheels, faster, more explosive and simplified combat, a pre-set human protagonist that goes by their surname, some of DA's fantasy races like elves being made to look like some of ME's alien races, extreme bipartisan conflict, etc.) And that the devs are planning on adding even more ME features in the future (like having players choose their DA3 protagonist's background history a la ME). If it's true that most, if not all features I dislike about the direction DA is going have come from ME, then I'm probably not going to like the games.

Anyway, back to Alistair.

lol Alistair's got a chip on his shoulder! It can be so hard to tell since he's usually so chipper and snarky, but at any moment, when you least expect it, BAM! He gets so snide and moody. Whether it's making faces at the camera when you're taking screenshots, biting your head off when you fail to save a certain someones in Redcliffe, or even deciding to spare a certain someone at the Landsmeet. You think he's such a big adorable puppy, and then he reveals his big teeth underneath.
It's pretty funny! XD

EDIT: I think we all know that Alistair isn't quite as perky or cheerful as he likes to pretend to your face, but I wonder if you discovered just how he really feels behind your back? I always assumed he just moped or wept when no one was looking, but maybe he snarls at them? xD

I played ME before playing DA2, and it is true that all the things I was put off by in ME turned up in DA2. But I still really liked ME. The story is very good in the first game (haven't played the others), as is the gameplay, so I was able to throughly enjoy playing it. True, I never romanced any of the characters, the having to go back to the ship just didn't work for me. And the couple word dialogue wheel didn't work for me either because I never knew what I was saying. But it was still miles more engaging than DA2, IMHO. Definitely worth a try, by the end I was completely absorbed (something that never happened while playing DA2), so even though both games shared certain aspects I'm not too fond of, I will always recommend ME1 to my friends, even though I don't recommend DA2.

And back to Alistair....   Does anyone have any mod recommendations? I knew this was the best place to ask, since I'm more concerned with Alistair related mods. I finally got a PC that can play this game, so no more console. Yay! Anyway... I've looked for mod lists but there are just so many, and some say they are for different patches, or versions.... and I need ones that would work with the ultimate edition and win 7.

I'm mostly interested in the basic, bug/glitch fixes, dialogue fixes, etc. I love the vanilla look to all the characters so I don't need any asethetic changes, but if there are some authethic looking armor/clothes options that's good too, but not priority. Also, I would like to use those extra scene mods for Alistair (and the Morrigan left out scene I read about). Do those replace already existing scenes, or add?
Thank you so much for any advice! I'm so excited to play this on the pc FINALLY. :D

I have series of Dragon Age modding posts on my Tumblr, covering most of the mods I use regularly. The Alistair-centric mods are here, and a master post with links to things like armour, and bug fixes is here. I'm not sure what Morrigan scene you are referring to, but the Morrigan Restoration Patch restores/fixes a lot of her content, and I have a link to that on my "Fixes and Tweaks" page. (I'll be updating the Alistair post in the next few days to add a few recent mods.)

Anything by DahliaLynn is great and Alistair related.Posted Image Improved Romance Scenes - Alistair is another good one to have. Dahlia's includes a wedding scene for the HNF and she has improved kisses. IRS has some bug fixes, plus "go to sleep" scenes. Dahlia's can be found here or at Nexus. IRS is found at Nexus. (Sorry, lazy me can't provide links right now.) That's all that comes to mind at the moment. I'm sure to think of others later on or someone else is sure to come along and add to this.

Yes, that was what I was trying to remember.

Thank you, thank you! The tumblr list gives me a great place to start.

@Bev I will make sure to look specifically for DahliaLynn's mods on Nexus. That should narrow down the search a bit. Thanks!

Are there any known combinations that clash horribly when installed together? And do any completely replace already existing scenes? I'd probably want to add those in cautiously.

Off the top of my head, DahliaLynn's "Alistair First Night" replaces the vanilla scene. IRS has some conflicts with ZDF, but they are easily resolved by following the IRS installation instructions.
