Really? He wont stay with another warden when unhardened? That doesn't make much sense to me, if he's made king, yes, I understand that but if they are both Wardens why does he need to be hardened to continue the relationship?

Ahh OK, I misread your previous post Read here on what it means for hardening Alistair (and Leliana as well).
I just started a new playthrough (with a rogue f!cousland) and this time I'm actually planning to put Anora on the throne and let Alistair stay a warden, my only concern is: do I still harden him or not?(personally I prefer him hardened) Is it better for him to remain unhardend if I'm not going to make him king? How do the events of the Landsmeet affect hardened/unhardened Alistair who is going to stay a warden?
I think he is better unhardened if he is remaining a warden. He is too willing to take the throne when hardened and if you give Anora the throne, you're going against his wishes, which he would probably get upset over. I have never played it that way but I assume that would be the case. Though I can't see him ending a relationship over it.
I personally keep him unhardened if I want him to stay a warden, he seems happier that way, and my wardens are very protective of Alistair and like to make sure he gets to do what he wants with his life.

So to avoid any negative feedback from him I should just not talk to him about giving the throne to Anora if he's hardened. Okay, thanks a lot to all of you, I'll see what I make of it when the time comes.
He will butt heads with my Warden anyway, although I play the same Cousland she will make some different decisions than usual (yes, after my fifth playthrough I'm starting to get bold

If Unhardened he takes the oath 'gladly' and says "Easiest oath I ever made". If Hardened he concedes the throne (even hardened he really doesn't want it) and is content as long as 1) Loghain pays for his crimes and 2) Anora deals with the Blight as promised. It's a different line if hardened but it's been a while since I played and forget it. My last two playthroughs (on Amells, male and female) I left him unhardened and a Warden. Daylen was too sweet and felt like a protective big brother for him, and Melita Amell was a bit more ruthless, finding him easier to control if unhardened. She did care for him, but she was very manipulative (bout the closest I can come to playing a jerk character). And i can't bring myself to put unhardened Alistair on the throne at all. which is probably what she would have done but *shrug* I just can't do it.

I might have to give it a try next play through. Like I said, all my wardens very quickly become very protective of Alistair and they all make sure he gets what he wants. I never made him hardened and not made him king because it always seemed to go against that. After all its his birthright and if he wants it than he should get it (or at least make his claim).
But saying that I do always want to harden him to give him the courage to stand up for what he wants too. Which has always been difficult if I didn't want him to be king.
I'm the same, I can never play a true jerk character no matter how hard I try. They never make it past Ostagar without softening up.

@ wiccame: just make sure if you do harden him, do NOT let him fight the duel if you want to keep him a warden.
