When I did Goldanna's quest, she looked down on my Warden and asked if he was "some servant to carry your riches". Then Alistair immediately told her " Don't talk to him like that! He's my friend!"

1. Well , I guess you're the one crying about Duncan when you talk to him, because that's mostly the only time I've heared him talk about him. If you know what his reaction would be about the death of the man who has pulled him out of becoming a lunatic lyrium gobbling plates-on-skirt, then dont ask.

None of that changes the facts, Alistair's romance is mostly him talking about his recent loss, which is absolutely minor compared to yours if you're a Cousland, and falling in love with you if you coddle and comfort him without ever confronting him about his hypocrisies or delusions. Leliana at least just has an existential crisis, and Morrigan - whom nobody would expect to sympathize with anyone - actually sympathizes with you for having lost your mother. I'm not saying that I want to be able to whine, just that the relationship with Alistair is completely unbalanced from a realistic standpoint and that a protagonist who doesn't want to be treated as his mother might want to look elsewhere for romance.

 

And yes, as your senior officer it's his job to take charge of the quest, making him negligent of his duty for refusing to do so in addition to making him a deserter if he becomes king or runs away to the Free Marches. And yes, a Cousland is a descendant of Calenhad too and your position as the proper child of a Teyrn makes you the only person besides Loghain, Anora and later Fergus to be eligible as monarch, while Alistair's claim is technically illegal and supported only by Eamon's say-so and his marriage to you or Anora if you so choose.

Pretty much this the first time I played.  It is a pretty harsh thing to say, but you're right, he doesn't take it as it sounds.  He takes it as "I have to stand up for myself more".

I find it strange that David Gaider decided to make Alistair king in those comics he wrote, like Those Who Speak. Who knows, maybe it isn't such a terrible thing after all.

Or maybe he only did that because it makes for a more interesting story and it becomes easier to have Alistair involved in non-Grey Warden business.

Probably number 2.  Though I'd think being king would make it even less likely he could run off adventuring.  At least as one of the few GWs in Ferelden, he pretty much could do as he liked provided he stayed in contact with them.

That much is true. Just help me understand one thing... the novels are canon, right? I mean, they are referenced in the games regardless of world states.

But the comic books are more like a spin off with no bearing in the main storyline?

Ha, I remember that. Even funnier as a city elf.

 

"Who're you, then? Some elf to carry his riches?"

 

My alienage rat saw red, but Alistair immediately responded, "Hey, don't talk to her like that. She's my friend and a Grey Warden."

 

I think that's when my City Elf's feelings toward Alistair shifted from affection to love.

I'm still confused as to whether hardened Alistair wants to be king or not.

I've heard that he gets upset if you choose Anora. He also steps up for the title on his own if he was the one to duel Loghain.

One more thing: Apparently, there is no way for an unromanced HoF to stay on good terms with Warden!Alistair.

If you did the DR, he says you "walk on a dark path". And if you didn't, he resents the fact that he's been overshadowed by the Warden's fame.

Yea, on my King Cousland run I encountered that line (the dark path one) and it kind of fit considering Gawain's overall personality.  Was a bit saddening though since I ended Origins with the two of them as best buds.

I thought he stepped up either way during the Landsmeet. The only difference is hardened and persuading him to marry.. then his pragmatism shows when Anora tells him to chill out. Both Alistairs generally complain though.

I do what's good for Ferelden. Not Alistair. That means him and Anora. If I played a fem Cousland, romancing him would probably be even better for Ferelden, I admit.
 
I know that softened Ali seemingly likes Anora as Queen more (maybe because of his insecurity), but he's pragmatic as hardened and although complains more, is capable of swallowing the occasional bitter pill.

I have only done one Alistair/Anora marry each other save and man, it was painful to watch .That's becuase I'm usually playing either a male or Female Cousland who either get married to Alistair or Anora. (; My Dalish Elf however....didn't romace Morrgian; so he killed himself and left Leliana griefing alongside side a Married Alistair/Anora couplet.
