I thought he stepped up either way during the Landsmeet. The only difference is hardened and persuading him to marry.. then his pragmatism shows when Anora tells him to chill out. Both Alistairs generally complain though.

Not that it matters, though. The war table missions and codexs in Inquisition show that king Alistair is softened by default.

Ten years later, Alistair still isn't interested in doing this job, like when he says that he is glad Teagan is in the Exalted Council and not him.

He also hasn't evolved in this role at all, like in that war table mission where he needs help smoothing things over with Orlais. Anora has an easier time at it because of her diplomacy skills while Alistair is completely lost.

The GW Order really is the better place for him.

I have only done one Alistair/Anora marry each other save and man, it was painful to watch .That's becuase I'm usually playing either a male or Female Cousland who either get married to Alistair or Anora. (; My Dalish Elf however....didn't romace Morrgian; so he killed himself and left Leliana griefing alongside side a Married Alistair/Anora couplet.

I've no idea why anyone would leave Alistair stuck with a woman that doesn't care about him.

Do you remember his reaction to the idea? "I think I'm gonna need a drink... or ten."

Simply put, I don't care about his feelings. That's not something I would revolve an entire Country's fate around. But he's a good enough king that he has one effect on Denerim that Anora doesn't: The City Elves/Alienage are better off with him as a king. Anora by herself gets the elves killed.

His name is also important for Fereldens. They haven't fully grown out of their Feudal system yet. Even with Andraste the slave, Loghain as their national hero, and Anora as queen, they still seem to care about nobility. Go figure.

I also recruit Loghain most of the time. I like having him in the story.. To me, executing him is like taking a blunt instrument to the plot. It's simplistic and more black and white. It's just not as interesting to me, personally.

I'm not so sure about his bloodline being much help. King Alistair's codex says that there are people who don't support his rule because they don't believe that he is Maric's son.

But yes, I figured that these choices can only be made by people who don't care about Alistair as much as the rest of us.

It's true, I don't care as much. But I was a lot more iffy about it awhile back. I used to like Drunk Alistair the best. It's the best cameo in DA2 at least. :D

The City Elf situation ultimately changed my mind. By herself, she's like any other human ruler. I don't think she's bad necessarily, but she cracks down on them the moment she's stressed or challenged. Alistair is at least a slight breath of fresh air, for elves. You can't say he doesn't do anything substantial.

I think they're all probably that way. I haven't seen evidence otherwise at least. While Tevinter is simply worst.

So that's a good case for Alistair. And in my headcanon, he provides a front against Qun influence. :P They have nothing on him, in this respect. Any elf who converts under his rule is simply an idiot.

I thought the Silent Grove comics indicate that Alistair is hardened by default.

Spoiler

Also, hardened Alistair may still resent a lot of his royal duties. The epilogue for a hardened Alistair says that he put a lot of effort into learning to rule, but that doesn't necessarily mean he enjoys it.

The codexes and war table missions from DAI suggest otherwise. Alistair is softened by default.

Can't a better case can be made for him being hardened by default, based on his cameo as King, and his far more extensive appearance as a Warden?

Discuss. :)

How do the codeces and operations say he's unhardened?

Well, he still sucks at politics.

If there were any continuity to hardened Alistair, his newfound dedication to learning the art of ruling would've shown results ten years later.

It didn't, because it couldn't affect the games that followed.

I don't think that's enough to say he's unhardened. He didn't strike me as a bad leader, per se, he's just rather impatient with The Grand Game.

He was never asked to literally play the Game. Just sit down and speak to another nation's leader.

I would imagine that often the negotiators for colonial expansion would not be the Kings or Grand Dukes or Empresses. The concern I have is not Alistair requiring the services of Josephine in that instance but the face that she is Inquisition. Alistair is a soldier. All his training is that of a soldier. There is too much for Ferelden to lose if Alistair panders to pride and takes on negotiations himself. It shows good sense and political savvy.

This is dragging out far longer than necessary and I'm not in the mood to keep explaining this over and over again.

Go ahead and read these war table missions at the wiki. Compare Alistair's version to Anora's.

My thoughts on this is that ; Alistair will always be Alistair. He will always act as Alistair hardened or not, and will not act differently just because he's got a crown on his head. That is one of the many things I love about him. He will do what  important things that needs to be done without the  180 on his personality.

Now what the heck. Bev's delicious pic disappeared!

I was pretty surprised to find out that Alistair is such a popular character. *I* like him, but I thought I'd be the only one.
