It's possible for one to change their opinions of someone, or grow to respect someone despite being the kind of person they typically dislike.
But Alistair never changes. When and how would that respect be earned?
I would imagine when Sten saw two lone Wardens take down an Arch Demon after battling their way thru an ocean of Darkspawn.

I have both. I prefer Hardened King Alistair though.... And than Unhardened Warden Alistair...
Alistair complains so much about being king in the graphic novels that I'm convinced that hardening him is completely meaningless.
Well In canon, is he hardened? And plus, I image he enjoys it slightly more due to my Queen Cousland's presence in his life.
When does Alistair break the news about the Warden's short life span?
Is it after getting to a certain level of approval or after exploring key dialogue options?
The 'What changes about you after the Joining?' conversation (which includes the revelation about the the Wardens' truncated lifespans) is opened up by first having the 'Why have you remained a templar if you hate the Chantry?' conversation... which I think is predicated on having the 'So you said this Arl Eamon raised you?' conversation. One leads to another, as it were, in terms of availability.
