1. We could have gone a lot darker had we wanted to, but we didn't.
2. If you want a happy ending, there's always Leliana and Zevran.

Leliana and Zevran will have their bittersweet endings, too, since the Warden is tainted and they are not.  Both also have the potential to be tragic if L or Z's past catches up to the happy couple.

Really, I'm ok with the bittersweetness of DAO romances.  More than ok with it- I like it that way.  I've said before that I have a feeling Gaider wanted to make it so that if you made Alistair king, you got dumped.  So the fact that we can even have our princesses and naughty chancellors is fun.

Naughty!

Oh yes.  Did I even get out of Lothering before my PC was telling him he was handsome?  Barely, if so.  Being a relative newcomer to video games and a complete newcomer to Bioware, I was blown away.  We were playing on an unpatched PC game at Normal so the combat was pretty hard, and I doubt I would have continued the game at all without wanting to see what would happen with Alistair.

Well, like I said, I appreciate the direction he took it, because it is so engrossing and yet so damn frustrating. I'm not yelling, "this is bullsh-t!" as I throw my copy of DA to the ground, cross my arms and pout. I'm just saying Alistair is such a wonderful character that I want the romance to be sunshine and kittens ;)

I do, too. I was pissed at the writing, not the characters (I've seen some misdirect their anger at Alistair and use Zevran as a revenge tool instead of just realizing that's how the characters were written) and I'm getting my save-the-world-with-a-happy-romance fix from Mass Effect instead. I'll definitely do the DA2 romance(s), but I am going to be skeptical and expect to be dumped or shunned at some point. That's how jaded I am. =p

I would've liked that too.  But ... I think if Gaider had given us those sunshine endings, we probably wouldn't still be talking about Alistair 9+ months later.

This game's story is so brilliantly written.  There's so many layers to it.  I'm still finding things that make me go, "Ohhhhhhh!"

@Schratty, I can sympathize with that, but well...romance is a risk in life, as it is in Bioware games. I thought the best movie on that subject was "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". Initially, it asks would you erase all memory of a painfully broken relationship. By the end, it asks the question whether--knowing exactly how horrible it turned out--you would go through it all again. Ultimately, they answer no to the first question and yes to the second.

What I liked about it was the characters were both flawed, you could understand what they saw in each other and you could understand why it didn't work. It's a hard film at times--the break up scenes were very real and painful--but ultimately an affirmation of romance.

Eh, my Wardens have happy endings. Mostly.  In the end.  Things might be just a teeny bit bumpy along the way.  *grins*

I've read a few of your latest chapters- very good!  You've set up a plausible nightmare scenario.

My Wardens who kidnap Alistair are perfectly content with their templar snuggle-bunny, either as Wardens or traveling adventurers.  My Queens enjoy being queen and all that political stuff, so they are happy there.  It's very much a "to each their own" kind of deal.

Oh, generally I think their stories have happiness in them.  My chancellor is happy to be chancellor and is good at it.  I even have them pictured as being happy in Alistair's political marriage.  But no matter what, a Warden is going to die fairly young either in battle or from their own hand.  I don't see how that can't be melancholic, though it can also be a good death and thus sweet in its own way.

Plausible nightmare scenarios FTW?  Oof, those characters.  I feel for them.

And yeah, it is melancholic.  I always see the Warden and Alistair going to their Calling together, regardless of who is comes for first.  At least, even at the end, they'll always be together.  Juxtapose that with the AU fic I have in the works, where Alistair has a non-Warden queen.  That...is not so much a happy ending there.

I am really enjoying these shots.  I think they all come out very well.

For me.. He was the first romance.  I got halfway through and hubby had to spoil it for me by mentioning the prince thing.  I went straight to the boards to see if it was worth even romancing him because of the possible endings.  To my joy, it was... Then the first love scene... You'd probably never guess but, I couldn't hardly watch..  I was all blushing and covering the eyes (and peeking through), and blushing some more...:innocent::wub:

I was unaware DA even had romances.  Keep in mind, I knew nothing about the game when I got it for Christmas.  It was just something fun looking that I put on my wishlist.  So there I was, happily playing, talking to people, being all friendly like, and Alistair gives me a rose.  And then more stuff started happening and I discovered tent time.  This was my progression:

And I didn't realize tent time included cutscenes, so the first time time played, I was like "Oh, please don't let anybody walk by my door!"  Ahhh, innocence.

Ok, don't kill me, but in my perusal of dA I came across this drawing by sweetfoxy and found it very sexy, so I appropriate it for general Theirin lamppost-iness.  I take it that this is a Warden's fantasy about Cailan.

Posted Image

You could take it as how Cailan might have been able to live if he had been allowed to really love someone.

@ maxernst: Well, as I already stated, I like the complexity of the romance, but I just hate seeing nice guys finish last :P

Seems like you and I were in a similar boat. My brother got it for me thinking it'd be something I'd like (I love the crap out of KoToR and Mass Effect). From the moment I first witnessed Alistair and the mage bickering in Ostagar, it was love. When I discovered that he was LI, I was ecstatic :D

As far as dealing with things,I think if he has the Warden by his side after the game, he's fine.  I don't see him being excessively consumed with thoughts of regret or remorse in that case.  As for him thinking it's realizing his ultimate goals as a Warden, maybe. I think that gets down to the fact that if Alistair does not have the Warden as a love or best friend, his life has no value outside of the Wardens, at least to him.  If the Warden never cares about him, or if he loses the Warden, the only thing of value in his life is gone.

I agree with this completely!

Even the HFN who becomes his queen will eventually have to deal with the heir issue.  I know they decide it doesn't really  matter, but I can see Eamon pressuring him to dump her after a few childless years.  Unless a miracle happens.  Or unless Alistair is really hardened enough to stand up to Eamon urging him to do his duty.

I don't worry too much about the heir thing, at least Alistair and the HFN try (alot I imaginePosted Image), Anora as sole queen doesn't even remarry so no heir either way.  I know they don't know that but hey I do and I'm in control!Posted Image

I was told there were romances in the game (husband bought it, not me) so I kinda scoffed, but OOOKAAAY. I was curious since I had never seen this implemented in a game so I looked up who were the LIs so I'd know who to be looking for. (This is how I dodged the Gorim-bullet in knowing that the romance with him in origins wouldn't survive. I was shocked to see Gorim again, to be honest, completely forgetting that he said to meet him in Denerim.) So my choices were Alistair and Zevran and I gave Alistair a whirl first. I had planned on romancing Zevran in my second game, but the first Alistair game was such a trainwreck that I decided to romance him again on the second game to have a "clean" playthrough. Kind of a waste because I ultimately felt that Brosca + Alistair didn't flow as well as Aeducan + Alistair did.

I thought Alistair was charming and endearing in his way, but I was really stunned that there was a line about the fact that she was a dwarf and he was human, that it was irrelevant to Alistair. That's really what sealed the deal. The idea of dwarf + human can seem odd to a lot of people and I was one of them at first, but it felt natural and the fact that the line was there at all made me feel like dwarves weren't piggybacking off romances meant for tall races. I definitely got the vibe that the writers were being inclusive instead of accomdating. If that makes sense.

The love scenes were just awkward for me to watch. I have nothing against them, but it did not flatter the dwarf, imo. No biggie. =p

I sure went straight for Alistair on my first version of the game (Xbox). My first character was an elven mage, and when I found out the limitations of an elven mage character as to where the relationship could go with Alistair, I dropped her like the proverbial hot potato and started an HNF immediately!

As far as an heir goes, I just assume that Fergus Cousland will remarry, and one of his children would be named as heir to the throne.

I had no idea there were any romances and when I found out HNF came right to the top of the pile.  But I have missed out on a couple of important endings.  I always assume that the noble way is the only way to get Alistair, but not if you make Anora Queen and then take Alistair away into the sunset. HMMMM  Nice thought. No duty just us.Posted ImagePosted Image

I went straight for Alistair and never looked back! It's been so long since the discovery of the greatness that is tmp and DahliaLynn that I've sort of blocked the vanilla scenes out and I don't remember my initial reaction to Alistair's.  I think his first look at her is sweet, and so is the watching-her-sleep.  I appreciate that they tried to add character elements and not just make it pixel porn.

Of course, as mentioned, it has since been well and truly eclipsed...

For me also, the romance was totally unexpected.  Here's what I posted at my WoW guild forum:

"Dec. 22, 2009 - Dragon Age.  Got this for an early Christmas present.  So far it's very good.

Dec. 24, 2009 - Ok, I really do like this game.  I've gotten very caught up in the story, and I've actually gotten teary in a couple of scenes.

Dec. 26, 2009 - I am completely in love with this game!  I even found myself dreaming about its characters last night.  And OMG, I think my character's tank has a crush on her!   "

I said that as a joke, thinking it was funny that I was interpreting that into Alistair's dialog.  Then I found out he was very serious!

I went for Alistair on first playthrough. I was contemplating Zev but my PC was creeped out by the "pleasure of killing" conversation. He's inured to killing as something he has to do, but if there was no blight to fight he wouldn't be out murdering people for fun, so I loaded up the Equal Love mod, so I could romance Alistair.

When the dark ritual came around, did your PC do it or did he still talk Alistair into it? I'm always fascinated by this because the female PC has zero choice while the male PC doesn't have to put Alistair in this position. Then again, I've seen games here the male PC passes the buck to Alistair because they wouldn't touch Morrigan with a 10 foot pole in addition to not wanting to be responsible for siring the whatever mess was about to come. =p

When I eventually do this, Aeden will bite the bullet and sire a god-child.  Of course, he will have already slept with Morrigan, so that part isn't the big sacrifice.  It's more the knowledge of what he did.

That's how I did it, but he suffers a lot of angst over it and doesn't tell Alistair how he survived until five years later.  There was no way he was going to pass the buck to Alistair; he was afraid Alistair wouldn't agree to it, and still feels guilty that he went ahead and did it without Alistair's knowledge.

I wasn't able to play DA short after the release and before I was able to play I heard to many spoiles (thanks to my hubby) I new Alistair was a romance option.  I went straight on him and brought his approval high as fast as possible; I was to curios to wait ;) My first thought on the romance, it's sweet but nothing special, then he said "but I can't imagine being without you... not ever" and I was lost. I was surprised there are romance scences and hid my eyes blushing.

My first playthrough was with a mage. I knew Alistiar would break up, if I made him king and he is unchanged, so put Anora on the throne. I knew the Grey Warden who kills the archdemon would die, so I did the DR... Now I was able to get the ending I should have gotten a long time ago Posted Image
