Speaking of medieval longevity re KoP: Both Averroes and Alhazen lived over 70 years.

They happened to live in what was at the time the most advanced civilisation in terms of medicine. That's not what Ferelden is.

But I forgot why we were arguing about this in the first place, it's not important.

Yeah, there was a great medicine school by the time of Averroes, can't remember whether it was in Baghdad or in Medina. That's why I tossed Yarrow Mamout, a 19th century American in the mix, because you spoke of the diet.

Methinks Alistair speaking of cooking is just a quip aimed at infamous British "cuisine". You know, one of the world's thinnest books: British Gourmet. Asterix in Britain or in the Legion iirc had more of it.

I didn't think a moment we were "arguing" but rather just discussing and jokingly at that.

Averroes born in Cordoba, Spain or Al Andalus at the time died in Marrakesh, Morocco.  Not sure he travelled any further than north Africa, but frankly, who would want to? But of course you are quite right Muslim Spain was the best place in Europe to live in the middle ages, he probably ate a good Mediterranean diet...

As to British cuisine, yep, point taken.  Half English/Spanish here so I know of what I speak...

Averroes, aka Ibn Rushd lived in Cordoba in Al Andalus / Spain.

You guys always forget the other races. Alistair's LI could be an elven or dwarven lady as well. There are old elves and dwarves, remember the storyteller in the Dalish Camp and their leader and whatnot, not to speak of the Dwarven Shaperate guy to mention just a few.

Maybe we should compare the longevity to those of, say Adam, Noah, Metuselah etc. They were well in their 900's, I'm told... So, 30 years is not at all that long a time.

Yeah, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that very, very few people back then made it to one hundred. Legendary figures who lived much longer have nothing to do with this.

And why should the fact there are old elves or dwarves have anything to do with anything? We don't have a reason to believe that they have significantly longer lifespans than humans although the Dalish lifespan is getting longer.

Because we are speaking of legendary people living as heroes in a magical setting in extraordinary times.

KoP @ Maria: Of course I know, where Averroes lived, the point was, the school was known all over by that time civilized aka Muslim world and attracted students from everywhere, at least Muslims and Jews. I was reminiscing a Noah Gordon novel about an English physician who wandered there disguised as a Jew.

But the ones you're citing aren't from the DA universe so they don't have anything to do with whether thirty years is, in the DA universe, a long time.

It was Cordoba and Baghdad then. Those two were the centers of the Islamic Civilisation (Damascus and Cairo were also). Medina, alongside Mecca and Jerusalem were the spiritual centers and they did not have very well known centers of science and study as far as I know.

As for 30 years being a long time.... My parents just celebrated their 36th anniversary and have been together for 42 years. In same cases, especially with young Wardens, 30 years isn't very long at all.

I don't get it. Why does the fact your parents have been together for over thirty years mean that thirty years isn't a long time?

I was pointing out 30 years seems like a lot, until it's over and when you could have so much more.  And that when I look at a couple like my parents, to think they'd have been dead for at least 12 years by about now is mind boggling.  Look at all the people you know who are about 50.  They'd be losing out on a lot if they were suddenly out of time.

I said it was sadder for a non-Warden LI because they're left behind.  Look at any widow/widower who looses a spouse when they're relatively young like the surviving LI would probably be (though not always).  It's a really sad thing.

Ok, ok, just foolin' around. You're so young, so you perceive the flow of time differently. For me, looking back 30 years feels like it was just yesterday. Hmmm... looking forward for 30 years, now, that's a different thing.

Zevran's got a pretty bad reaction, too, although not as drastic as unhardened Leliana's.

Thanks a bunch guys, found the book, gots to re-read it. The protagonist goes first to Gordoba, then all the way to Constantinople and Persia to study under Avicenna aka Hussain ibn Abdullah ibn Hassan ibn Ali ibn Sina, the greatest physician by the time and on.

Oh, I'm in the same situation with my PC. I keep seeing the " Has anyone ever told you how handsome you are?" option. I keep trying to tell myself no, but it's just so hard when the option is right there! [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/pinched.png[/smilie]

I would say that Zevran is every bit as dead and destroyed by losing the Warden as Alistair is.  Considering the transformation Zevran has to go through even to be able to love someone, this should be no surprise.

As penance for writing about sad what-if scenarios:

I tend to think that Wardens going explicitly for the US ending shouldn't really romance anyone. The effects it has on the LIs is just... too horrendous. Though I confess, it is difficult to resist the love.

There's always the 'breaking up once you realize what you're going to do' option.

That tends to be my general solution. The issue I have with that though, is that its a kind-of 'break up out of necessaity where you both still have feelings' and I don't think the bereaved party should be any less affected by it, even though that's how it works in practice. An exception is, of course, Alistair's special 'still in love' status. In short, breaking up because you're going to kill yourself seems like an imperfect solution, also if you're RP'ing there isn't much chance to do it since you find out the night before the final battle.

Not exactly the night. Regarldess of what Morrigan says about the DR requirements, Redcliffe and Denerim are too far apart and when you arrive at Redcliffe you're even told that the darkspawn army won't hit the city for two days and they're already well-established by the time you show up. That's plenty of time to break up though I'll agree not much time to get over.

Now, to encourage dialogue:

I am a firm believer in the Fiona Is Alistair's Mom plot and  I am in the process of writing a scene that reuintes them (well, he finds out that she's his mother). I know how I'm taking it (since my scenario is quite specific) but I'm interested in reading about how others imagine him handling the news. Anger? Disbelief? Joy?

Disbelief followed by anger. He's been lied to by everyone--including Duncan.

I suspect that there would also be some difficulty with Fiona not responding well to his anger. I can totally see her getting defensive, especially since I see her as having a combination of guilt and relief.

I was talking more in-game ability to do it rather than RP-time, though i did get my words a bit jumbled. Riordan drops a bombshell, Morrigan drops another bombshell, and then you're at the gates. I assume the only ways to do it would be if you could go back downstairs after Riordan's talk, or at Denerim's gates before heading into the city. (Or during the final level if you take them with you).

I feel like I should post a screenshot of my PC x Alistair, unfortunately most of the ones i have are a bit risque...
