Oh, hmm, guess my approval was high enough in Haven, he just commented then we went on. I'll have to try the fight this game.  He's always at +100 by the time I reach Haven.

It's not about approval, it's about successfully passing a persuade/intimidate check or selecting the right dialogue choices.

He can still challenge you even if he's at 100 Friendly.

I think he is much easier to convince when he calls you Kadan. I think you don't even need to pass a persuade check. He'll be like "I trust you kadan".

Wow, Sten is always one of the harder ones for me to get approval with. Ah well.

Actually, it's quite easy to gain huge bumps in his approval if you stand up to him (during dialogues and the Haven confrontation) and complete his personal quest. I usually end between 70+ to 85+ approval with him.

EDIT:

@KoP:

Yeah, if you've completed his personal quest he'll say that he trusts you with his life and move on (I believe that no persuade check is needed then).

But you can still get him to fight you at 100 approval if you select the more hostile options.

I combined two pieces of dialog in this screenshot to avoid having to post two pics.  Look at Alistair's day-dreamy expression.  And it was hard fighting Sten's two-hander with a bow and arrows and no tank.

Oooh, yeah, that would do it. I'm way too fond of my DW rogues.

I actually find archers to be excellent duelists. Provided you have the Master Archer talent, combine Defensive Fire (+30 defense), Suppressing Fire (penalty to attack with each arrow), with Elf Flight arrows (+6 attack), along with below the belt (for rogues) and Crippling Shot (penalty to attack and defense), and it will be nearly impossible for the enemy to hit you.

After a rough day at work, finishing my HN play through was just what I needed, Now Alistair and I are off to help Fergus rebuild Highever. Yaaaaa! Alistair did his part in killing the AD. I just thought I'd share the moment.

HILARITY. Alistair's all like "La la la, I wonder what she'd do if I tried to kiss her?"

PC: DUEL TO THE DEATH OMG

Alistair: Should I give her that rose? No, no, she'd think I was stupid. Maybe a nice cheese wheel...

You win the internet -bows in reverence-. I seriously want to know what the companions are thinking when you are in a romantic coversation with Alistair in the Deep Roads when they are dying of a pierced jugular or something:P

I usually do the sacred urn quest early, I've still never had any trouble with Sten. In fact, I found it quite disapponinting. I wonder what's going wrong? I didn't think it could be hard.

I got it today, I just didn't choose any persuade or intimidate options, told him "it isn't pointless" and it would save eamon.

I can't do it! I have been stuck since shortly after the Isolde incident. She's a blood mage, Alistair thinks blood mages are evil and I can't overlook it! It's just chipping away at my resolve to finish this game the way I planned. Or at all. They've already gotten through tent time and everything but...blech.

No, I meant that when I choose to keep his approval low enough to get in a scrap with him, he's been disappointingly easy to beat.

Has anyone tried doing the sacred urn quest first, before going to Redcliffe? Does it change any thing afterwards? like the dialogue?

You cant do it first can you? Doesn't Brother Genitivies home turn up after Teagan/Isolde tells you about him?

You can do it first (you have to go straight to Denerim from Lothering and go to Genetivi's House). There isn't much to justify it from an RP perspective, though You can get some funny dialogue with Teagan and Isolde when they ask you to find it. You're all "Oh yeah, i foudn that earlier". Its only a couple of lines different, though. Not really worth it. Ironically you can't tell Ser Perth that you found it when you talk to him about the Urn.

Well, i've just gone to Denerim, straight from Lothering and entered his home. The only difference i've noticed is you can't ask about Brother Genitivie. You have almost the same conversation with Waylon, you can persuade or intimidate him into telling you what's wrong. You still get the options of visiting the Spoilt Princess to look for Brother Genitivie or entering the room behind him.

Edit- Thanks Eudaemonium.:)

I love doing it that way. Teagan asks you to find it and you're all 'You mean THESE sacred ashes?' and he just starts sputtering and Isolde actually sounds pleasant when she tells him not to question a miracle. You can also clarify that you didn't take the entire urn but do have some ashes which I thought was an amusing line.

My RP reason for doing it was that since I'd already been to Denerim and had found out about Weylon and Brother Genitivi and also knew that Eamon was so ill that Isolde had been sending out knights to look for the Urn, chances were we'd be forced to do it later anyway so we might as well do it now so we didn't have to go to Redcliffe, go look for the Ashes, and then return to Redcliffe.

I may have to do a run through where I get the ashes first. I could never really justify it from an rp perspective so I'll just have to do it for the lulz.

They learned about it in Lothering, too, from the Redcliffe Knight (don't remember his name)  EDIT:  Hmm, that's probably what Sarah meant...oops, sorry for being so dense this morning  :)

My last HNF (the one pictured being attacked by Sten) did the sacred ashes before Redcliffe.  She heard about Eamon being sick and the search for the ashes in Lothering.  We started going to Redcliffe right after that, but Alistair told her about Goldanna and asked if we could go see her.  It seemed like a good idea to head right for Denerim and look for better equipment there before tackling all the treaties.  Alistair was still so crushed, Brin thought it would help him get back on his feet.  They met the very nervous, suspicious Weylon, found out his secret and decided it might be better to find those ashes before going back to Redcliffe.

And yes, I loved Teagan's reaction.

Sounds like fun doing it that way. I've never done the fight with Sten, and never have done the Ashes early.  I am early enough in this game to go ahead and do it this way....very cool!

Hehe, we all have moments of density!

I know that you can learn all about the quest before ever going to Redcliffe. My point is that none of my characters would assume that we would HAVE to do this later on, hence why none of them would do the Ashes quest first.
