Maybe not if you've been conscripted and would get arrested by the Chantry/ the law otherwise. The Wardens don't seem to enforce much military discipline, though, because the taint kind of enforces Grey Wardening all on its own.

That's what I was getting at there as far as the taint itself. And it
would be bad politically if the Warden in charge (via Weishaupt) started trying to give orders to the ruler of another country, (if Alistair is king)

If the Warden romances him and dies, he does leave the order saying it's not the same. Personally I think Alistair is happy if he has a place where he can feel he's doing good and ideally with someone who values him. That just happened to be Duncan in Origins. But if that's in the kingship, he does well there. If it's as a Warden, he does well if he's with the PC lover, at least as far as we know. IOW I don't think he's as gung-ho Warden as he seems to be. It's just the place he thinks he can exercise his ideals and find a sense of belonging[/quote]
So it was kind of like being a Warden was secondary to him in comparison of simply being wanted and valued by whoever...? I don't know.. he does make a big deal of it being an honor to be a GW.
