 I LOVE the Advanced Tactics mod.  I don't know if I could still play the game without it.  That mod and the one that gives you the maximum tactics slots.  I forget what that one is called now.  Adv. Tactics can set up your tactics for you, and it also gives you the option of letting your own character be controlled by tactics.  I can sit back and watch my party fight on their own.  I usually set up Zev to automatically disable traps.  Dog will watch my back and attack anything that's attacking me.  And Alistair is my super tank.

Like I said, (especially if I'm playing a mage) I get Taunt as soon as possible for him.  I'm still not sure what's better for him to use - Shield Wall or Shield Defense.  I usually have him use Shield Wall if he's fighting an elite.  I also set up tactics for him to go after elites.  I try to get Holy Smite for him by level 15 and set tactics to use it on mages.  If my mage becomes an AW, then I usually switch him to dual weapons.  

I'm pretty bad and understanding what all the spells and skills do, so most of the time I just let Adv. Tactics set them up for me.

I've been using it for awhile and haven't had a problem ever with saves.  I'm on a Mac that's using Bootcamp/Windows.  Not sure if that would affect it.

Me either. I've had armor and weapons randomly downgrade themselves though O.o

@Cmessaz: I did her in old gaelic kind of way being red haired and green eyed. I read in the wiki that they had done Ferelden like Europe and High Ever like Ireland and Scotland. So to me it screamed red head. I did a ponytail because my gal is a tomboy and not so much into fashion and silly girl stuff. I tried to do very little makeup on her (only enough to enhance her features) . Elizabeth Cousland my portrait is based on Black Scotsmen. They were considered to have Raven hair and striking eyes. So she has a light purple eye color.

On my first playthrough I had no idea you could set tactics until my husband pointed it out to me. Since I was playing a mage I pretty much set everyone to attack whoever was attacking me while I threw AOEs everywhere, I have gotten much better with them now. However, I should probably be embarrassed to admit it, but Alistair still gets a few enemy attacking main character tactics. I like it when he comes to the rescue of my pc. Yes, I am sad.

Well, I just pick defender, then remove all the tank options like taunt, becaust I don't play anyone as a tank. Then I add in things like if(magic user) under melee attack-->attack ( don't use this one because I like Alistair to fight the Big Bad. He's the best fighter. I usually have someone else protect my mage), and 'if under attack by magic-->holy smite' (don't use 'nearest magic user-->holy smite' or Alistair will smite spiders and such. The overkill is humorous, but it's not worth the wasted stamina. ) I'll also set him to take the least powerful health potion if his health is less than 25% as it usually gives the magic user time to cast a healing spell without him gettin too close to death

Stupid question but you're saving when you change them, right?

I find shield bash too useful to turn off--and fun, too, but if we encounter an ogre, I pause and temporarily remove it for both Alistair and my Cousland. I do the same with Cleanse Area (she's a templar, too), if we meet groups of magic users.

Never had anyone's tactics reset, although I have lost them if I didn't notive that they werent saved when switching to another custom save.

Does shield bash actually do damage or is it like pommel strike in that it only knocks down the enemy? I had never played a Sword and Shield warrior until yesterday, and it seems like no actual damage is done.

No damage is done, like Pommel Strike for two handers.
Its only a knock down talent.

Yup. I double checked that a couple of times. And it's not like he even resets to the starting default tactics, they just get completed wiped.

Damn, yet another reason for me to dislike Sword and Shield warriors. Eight defensive or passive talents, and of the four offensive ones only three do actual damage?

Well, at least the shield bash animation is cool.
