@Zjarcal
About the amount of damage the sword and shield spec does ...
I always considered that the "tank" spec.  Alistair's (or any s&s warrior's) sole purpose in combat is to draw enemies to him and absorb as much damage as possible, while the higher-damage-output but lighter armored party  members kill them off.  At least from too much time spent as a tank in WoW, I didn't think they were meant to do a lot of damage.  That's why, as soon as I get my party better equipped, I switch him to dual weapons.

Does that make sense?  Or am I just revealing my WoW nerdage?

It makes perfect sense of course!

Don't get me wrong, I know that the S&S warrior is perfect for the tank role. However I really wish that talents for said build focused on both the sword and the shield. All twelve talents are shield related, not a single one is focused on the sword, making the build almost entirely defensive, which makes it really unappealing to use on my main PC.

Also I don't even like to play with a tank, I go for a purely offensive party. Kill them before they can lift a finger!

I also really prefer warriors with damage skills instead of defense.  That's why I usually re-spec Alistair as soon as my party gets better equipped and why I am not planning on playing a s&s warrior myself.  Once my other melee companions get heavier armor, they seem to draw more attacks and my mage doesn't get jumped on quite as much.  But I do love Alistair's Taunt ability.  All the attackers are drawn to him like a magnet and he can tough it out.  It's hot.

I don't like to use a tank, myself. But of course, with two or more warriors, they naturally draw fire away from a mage or rogue. I can't help but think this discussion would happen, otherwise.

'Okay, Alistair, see all those darkspawn? You go out there and wave your arms and yell stuff at them so the all attack you and not us."

"Ummm...what will you be doing?"

"We'll attack them while they're beating the crap out of you."

"Couldn't we just, you know, fight them?

"This is less expensive."

"Expensive? Seriously? I feel so cherished."

YouTube comment on tmp's Alistair-dwarf scene:

"me encanta cuando se arrodilla T_T que hermoso!!!!"

I don't speak a lick of Spanish, but this is what Google Translate spits out:  "I love when he kneels T_T how beautiful!!"

My sentiments exactly.  Image IPB

While I'm here I'll ask. How crazy would it be for Alistair to agree to travel to Highever early, I mean after Lothering (maybe the circle) early, I'm thinking of it as a way he and Ms Cousland could both sort things out and refocus to face what's coming.

I went back to Cousland Castle early on once - got my butt whooped (I was on nightmare).  And that Temple of Valerok, or whatever it's called - thoes 2 guys protecting the final boss - whew.  I was doing ok an nightmare all along, but when I got there I had to go down to easy .  I think doing that fight on nightmare is harder than the harvester - I really don't think its possbable.

Oh I don't really mean from a difficulty standpoint. More from an RP one. I was thinking about it, and it wouldn't seem far fetched for them to be both moping at camp over everything they'd lost so suddenly and horribly.  And Sten in particular, I can almost see saying "Parshaara, go and deal with these things so you can focus!"

I think it at least partly depends on how you portray your Cousland, of course, but I see a cousland as being all "Couslands do their duty" etc.   Unless, of course, your Cousland thinks that Howe is there and she wants to try to get vengeance?  I dunno.

As far as going home to refocus, I'm not sure.  I imagine that she and Alistair would both be more worried about getting everything done to get the treaties.  Since every step of that particular path is littered with sidequests and they keep getting delayed, I think it might be a bit of a stretch to take a side trip that isn't required of them.

Yes, no play, no writing, just work, work, work.... ;) Heh, no, I enjoy it. I might have to build up a bit of a backlog of these so I don't have to stop everything when I get a ToP, though.

I only thought of it because Wardens Keep is...right there. And I'm thinking they'd go there pretty fast, to get supplies and save what weapons can be saved. Since they leave Ostagar with nothing but what's on their backs. I imagine everything they had was destroyed except what was equipped. Then they picked up Leliana and Sten who both have nothing. Elea was pretty torn between duty and staying with her parents, she came *this* close to needing conscripted out of there.

I also thought, maybe they both needed time to regroup, get their heads straight? Or they thought a good idea after Lothering and hearing about the bounty, then getting jumped by Zev, was to lay low, avoid the places they'd be expected to go. Cailan knew tons about the GW, so it shouldn't be too far out there that in his exuberance he talked about their treatied Allies too.

Edit: as for Alistair agreeing, well Eamon's in a Coma and that's the only thing he is dead set on doing ASAP, She'd have to convince him that we'd be no help to EAmon with assassins and bounties about. Laying low, after Zev, let them think we're dead or some such.

Oh, hmm.  The 'laying low' thing might work.  But when I figured everything out on a map, it seemed to me that Warden's Keep was midway between Highever and Amaranthine cities, on the border of Amaranthine.  So in my mind that's not all that close.  I can see you making it work in your fic, though... maybe they decide to pass by Highever after they go to Orzammar, and are on their way to Warden's Keep?  especially if they decide to travel via the coast instead of take the main roads.  Hmm.

I played Aedan as S & S until about level 12 or 13 and had to restart him as a rogue.  The idea of going through the Deep Roads like that made me want to poke my eyes out.  2H is slow to start out, but the finishing moves are sexy, so I actually enjoyed that when I played it a bit on my AW.  Didn't get too far with her though, either.

Mhairi is a pretty impressive S & S warrior, though.

LOL!

Mhairi does make for a decent S&S warrior but then again, she already has all the talents from the start and has the Champion spec, which is my favorite spec for a warrior.

You also mentioned in an earlier post how dull the supporting mage and I agree. I actually created one in Awakening, where for RP reasons, was restricted to talents from the Creation tree and the Shapeshifter spec. Thank the maker I gave her the shapeshifter spec, otherwise she'd be boring as hell to play.

Skyl4rk wrote...

Which makes me wonder, now that they're going to get rid of DW warrior, what the S&S tree is going to look like (and 2H for that matter).  I've currently switched my warrior to S&S just to get a feel of it.  Basically I often finding myself just auto-attacking and throwing in the occasional "pimp slap" (hehe), taunts, and grievous insult when needed. Other than that and activating and switching from one sustained talent to another, there's not much else I can do... Yeah, my warrior miss holding a sword in each hand *sigh*...Wait, that didn't come out right...

I'm also curious about that. The idea is to differentiate the classes as much as possible, so we'll have to see what they do there.

And you nailed it with the "I often finding myself just auto-attacking and throwing in the occasional "pimp slap"". That's how I feel as well with a S&S build. I think I'm just gonna do a combo of S&S and Two handed, grabbing the offensive shield talents and ignoring the rest in favor of Two handed talents.

Either Orz or the circle, likely. And that was kinda my though, we're heading to WK and see the road leading to Highever, Maybe leave Zev and Leli there to check things out, go to WK and arrange to meet them back there and see if we can succeed in ousting the forces.  After which we have a big arse castle to store things, strategize and sleep in should we so choose. Elea deals with her Ghosts, Loghain assumes she's dead, Alistair gets his Memorial, and when they get down to business everyone is refreshed, and ready to kick arse and take names.

Because I am feeling a bit random today, I thought I'd share this with the Alistair thread. It's proof that all that NBA'ing I make Alistair do is for a good cause:

Image IPB

Anders:
Uh, I didn't...wait. Why is there a portrait of a half, no mostly, naked man on the wall?
Brand: Oh, that's just Alistair. Recruitment poster, no big deal.
Anders: As in King Alistair? And why would you have recruitment posters up in the Warden headquarters? This place isn't exactly a hot spot. Chances are, if you're here you're recruited.
Brand: Morale.
Anders: Morale?
Brand: And fair warning. So...wanna Join?
Anders: ... all right!

I know most of the companion quests are pretty short but if you can go traipsing through the deep roads for Shale, the warden can go home and take out the trash.

If you recruit Shale pre-Orzammar and she asks you to go back to the Cadash Thaig while you're still there, it's not as far out of the way as returning to Highever Castle.

And Highever is off the northern road heading from The Tower or Orz towards Warden's keep, as was mentioned above. And Wynne makes you traipse through the forest to do hers

I wanted my HNF to go back to Highever. I wanted her to find her parent's bodies and give them a proper send off.

I wanted her to lay waste to any of Howe's troops that were there.

The Castle Cousland mod was fun but if I hope someday some talented person creates something similar to what I described and without those robot voices.
