I don't really get why this makes Alistair the bad guy, and not Morrigan.  They both hate each other, and they are both vocal about it.  One is no more innocent than the other.  And for a male warden who is in love with Morrigan ... you know he hates her.  If you don't want to hear why, don't ask.

Are we still talking about this?  I never said it made Alistair the bad guy, it just made my male PC want to punch him, as did his "good riddance" when she had saved one of their lives.  Testosterone will win out.  Does anyone really think telling another guy his girlfriend is a b*tch is going to work out well?  Like I said, Alistair can be clueless.  Personally I love the dynamic between Morrigan and Alistair.  The game wouldn't be the same without it.  It's like kids pulling pigtails in the back seat of the car.  Pretty harmless all in all.

I missed Thursday completely (damn gainful employment Image IPB), so here's a recoup for ToP.  My dwarf looks concerned about proportions.

I, for one, use the word 'b!tch' all the time. Not only that I use 'brown' or 'black' in front of the word, which when I worked in a workplace instead of from home, got me a few sideways looks before they knew to what I referred to:

My two young b!tches (I have six of varying sexes and ages)

Inclemency, they are gorgeous!  Do you show them?

Even if Alistair claims he's not good with dogs, I'll bet he'd like them!

Yah, they are not only shown 'for pretty' but have a ton of working titles, too, as they need to be worked constantly or they get too 'creative' coming up with stuff to amuse themselves.

They would run right over Alistair!

Omg, you know what they are, amazing, there are very few folks outside 'the breed' that know what they are! They sure are, I've had Groenendaels since the mid-1980s, just love them.

No, I know that's not what you were saying, but it seemed to be what KoP and a few others were.  I just wanted to pipe in and say that, using that one definition of the word that I posted, it really wasn't that surprising a name to call her, when he is asked to elaborate.

I didn't really want to get the whole debate going again, but people seemed to think that particular word was so horrible.  I just wanted to say that there was one definition of the word that really did describe how Morrigan was acting.  I think he was basically saying she was mean and spiteful.

@Inclemency: Those are beautiful dogs. I thought they were a shepard of some sort. I love those kind of dogs.

@Addai: hehe I'm sure the proportions are just fine ;)

I did the whole dusk robes in inventory thing but I wear the dusk robe set not the minor so I have the minor show up in my inventory to.

So Morrigan has all right on her side, and Alistair has none, huh? Sorry, we'll have to agree to disagree. I couldn't see it more differently.

No, I didn';t say she had all right on her side. I am saying how she was raised.

The way it comes off is that you're willing to make endless excuses for Morrigan, but will damn Alistair forever over the use of a single word. I personally don't find that position very persuasive.

The writers are north american. They mean this in a north american way. It's not serious here. Lady D has the right of it. Idiot is much more insulting.

*raises hand*

I'm in North America and I think "b!tch" is far more insulting than "idiot."

Same, and clearly my husband agrees, as in 18 yers if I ever ticked him off enough to use that word he literally takes a walk.

Additionally, I think Morrigan is the last person who would want her man posturing because Alistair, of all people, called her a name. I mean, feel free to protect your lady, but I can see her standing to the side rolling her eyes before mindblasting the both of you.

Just to clarify myself before I leave this.
I already said, if Morrigan was present and if alistair said that about her to her face, I would not have done anything. Doing so would be a rather pathetic attempt to get Morrigan's attention and I know she would roll her eyes at this.

It's not about protecting her. The way he says it, behind her back while knowing that I like her, comes off as a personal insult. And I only want the option to tell him never to say that to my face again because it annoys me and that he apologises. Is that too much to ask?

I interpretted that way differently. I don't think she showed much genuine sympathy there or if she understood what it means to lose a mother.
She was being polite yes, but did she show geniune sympathy at that point? I think she awkwardly said what she said to hide the fact that she really doesn't know what to say.

And that's it for this discussion. Didn't mean to bother anyone.
Cheers.

It's definitely not over the line to want Alistair to apologize (or at least have the chance to say something to him about it). I don't know how fruitful it would be (like when you can be all "I love him, you know!" to Morrigan and she rolls her eyes all "well, it's your funeral"), but it is a harsh thing to say.

I read it as sympathy because I'm taking into consideration the Morrigan Wall. Just the fact that she recognizes the import of that loss enough to know to pull back, the fact that she knows she *should* pull back and does, means she's not as backwards in the area of human attachment as some people make her out to be.

The original specific point I was referring to was questioning why Morrigan said that the only reason the PC is with Alistair is for bed time. Because she doesn't understand why else. And the fact that she pulls back does not indicate that she understands. At that point, I don't think she understands the whole situation, so decides to pull back precisely because of that. I don't think she fel that she "should* do anything. But that's another discussion all together. The way I remember it, yes Morrigan makes fun of Alistair to your face. But she doesn' resort to insults as low as this (and I think you have the right to tell her not to say that again).

I am not saying Morrigan is nice to Alistair, yes she is pouring salt on wounds and yes she thinks he is pathetic.
But I don't really care what they think of each other. What I care about is Alistair feeling entitled to insult her in what I percieve to be a very vulgar and indecent fashion to my face and think he is bonding with me by doing that.

And I said I'd be leaving lol
It's not really important and this discussion made it seem like it is. It's not like I got angry or anything, I just felt insulted and slightly pissed that I couldn't say anything.
Am I saying that Morrigan is the paragon of etiquette? No. And there are reasons for that.

And with that, I am really leaving. The discussion dragged too long.
And I believe Friday is smut time...or something. :D

KoP, I wish you would have read my post.  I really do not think that's what Alistair is doing.  I posted one of the definitions of the word, and I believe that is what he meant.  He is basically saying she is being really mean and spiteful to him.  There's nothing vulgar about that definition.  It's true.  She IS being spiteful.  And he only says that to your warden, after you give him the opening to elaborate on his feelings.

So next time, I'll be sure not to ask his opinion again. Noted.

EDIT: oh and I am nto the only one who thinks it's a vulgar word
Linguist Deborah Tannen, author of Talking from 9 to 5, says, "b*** is the most contemptible thing you can say about a woman. Save perhaps the four-letter C word."

I would much prefer Alistair say a word like that to her face. If he has something bad to say, say it to her face. Morrigan won't do anything, Leliana openly calls Morrigan a ****, and Morrigan backs down. I think Morrigan would like to see Alistair to stand up for himself.

The original definition is STILL "female dog" and that, is unfortunately not changed by the additions of new definitions, which came about due to it's frequent use as an insult. That definition is fine and dandy, but those who find it vulgar will continue to do so, as long as it's derived from the technical term for female dog.

He could have used WITCH, it is closer to spiteful and mean as a definition, and far less insulting. But tis the writers decision.

Gah!!!  You are really so determined to believe he was being vulgar.  KoP, I think you are ignoring the parts of my (and other) posts that burst your theory that Alistair is the villain here.

@Inclemency ... those are really gorgeous dogs. I love german shepards too though where I'm at is not large enough to have a big dog. We have a cat instead! A crazy cat but I love her anyway. We used to have a purebred british black lab that was hunter trained. Sweetest dog ever.

To get back on topic .... when does Alistair say he's not good with dogs? I must have missed that line somewhere.

Ok, since I respect you, I won't leave now as that will be as if I am dismissing you.
Where did I say Alistair was a villain? I might feel strong comtempt for the word, but that doesn't mean those who say it are villains.

Like Jess said. Regardless of what Alistair means by it (and there are better words to say that without resorting to that specific word and adding utter and complete with it), I wanted to have the option to demonstrate that I was offended.

Because I am weird like that. When I came to Canada the first time, someone called me SoB in a complimentary fashion and I told him to apologise regardless. Because I get offended.
