Erm, aside from maybe his appearance, it has been stated many times by Gaider and other devs that the whole older, gruff, worldly Alistair was dumped and completely rewritten. I don't really get how you can still think he is 32, when it has been stated that he is younger and that the character in the toolset description isn't really the one in the game. I am not saying you can't imagine him being in his 30s, but the toolset info is not relevant or correct in terms of the Alistair in the game. Granted, it *may* be possible they left his face the same or similar, but aside from that I don't really see how the toolset info is relevant to his current, final in game version.

Well, it doesn't really matter if you can see it or not. He looks older, he sounds older, and if I prefer to think of him that way, I will do so. To me, the game doesn't work as well if he's very young, story, looks, or voice, and I don't find either the romance, or his lact of confidence as powerful, if his lack of experience wigh both is perfectly normal for his age. I can either take the story as odd, or the timeline, and I prefer to go with the timeline as having problems.

Obviously, that's my take, and not the feeling of the majority, but does this have to be a 'boy, you're stupid if you think that' kind of thing? There are points on both sides, so do we really have to go there?

*bites tongue*

You are free to interpret it as you wish. If you think Alistair is 25, 30, 40, 100, 9,000, whatever. That is your choice. What I am saying is that just because you choose to interpret it one way, it doesn't eliminate the devs intent.

And a lack of confidence, etc might be normal for people in their early 20s now, but who's to say it was the same in Ferelden?

If I were calling you stupid, I'd just say that you're stupid in no uncertain terms. I just don't agree with saying he absolutely is older because you feel he should be older when the people who made the character say otherwise.

That, and there's just no way he was in the chantry, training as a templar for TWENTY years and didn't take his vows.

This. So much.

Well and the Word of God has also said that Alistair is meant to be 20 at the start of Origins and it would make the most sense, if you regard his heritage as well. (Fiona DUN DUN DUN) and the span of his templar training/ time in the chantry. I picture my Wardens to be 18-21 years at best, so it fits all very well. (my canon Lenya is 19 for that matter)

If you give him a few more years or keep the meant age is your choice. Though for me him being twenty works best. It explains a lot of his behavior, because while he's mature through his bad childhood, he is still boyish in other things.

OT but... Maria13, I finally found the time to read Dark Ritual (instead to horde it only in my faves) and I'm in love with your snarky, mature and witty King Alistair. <3 Currently at chapter 15, eager to read the rest now.  I'm a sucker for non-clichéd Elf/Alistair stories with a clever narration, so great FF, bravo.

Noone even came close to saying that.  Some of us just can't SEE it that way, and don't understand it (the cradle robbing thing for me). Personally, I'll never EVER play this game as "older" ANYTHING. I am 36 years old in real life, ith kids, husband and big fat responsibilities, so I refuse to be a middle aged warden in my fantasy world...lol

Just because we can't understand it, doesn't equal "anyone else is stupid". And believe me, if Yuki wanted to say it, she absolutely would flat out say it...lol:O

I like playing my characters in there mid 20's because I'm 32 and a single mom irl :o:O,But I don't want to play a character in there early 20's because I remember the whole insecurties and what not. So my hnf is prolly about 25 . where as my mage is 28.

I always assumed Ma and Pa Cousland were in there late 50's:O:O

And I never said that. I said that the story doesn't work as well for me, if he's young. And perhaps I read in eyerolling where there was none.

Just want to make note....32 is hardly considered middle aged.(please don't think like that!) 32 is very...young. I guess it depends on perspective and your own experiences.

We can do that?

So I can finally say that I think Alistair is a 5 year old who was magically trapped in the body of an adult because I interpretted it this way?:P
I am joking, joking.

I don't think facts are up for debate. You can still debate how old he should have been though, of course.

I was simply mentioning that that was the original plan, and although modified later, it seems there are remnants of that plan both in looks and VO.

That's fine. I am just saying you can think Alistair is however old because you feel it fits better but it doesn't make it the truth outside your personal interpretation. Not saying you believe this, just saying that outside one's RP (which doesn't have to make sense to or be agreeable for others because it's yours) there is an established age range for Alistair. I don't need anyone to change their RP or how they play the game because it has absolutely zero bearing on me or how I play my game.

Eyerolling? I guess that is my default tone. I never claimed to be good with words.

My PCs you mean?
I think the toolset has pre-determined age ranges for each origin, if I remember correctly.

I rp them as early 20s.
Though I have one mage character that I want to rp as 40-50ish and not sure how I can do that with the kid Jowan claiming I am his friend....

I had to spare loghain for the first time today. I did it for role playing reasons, and I took the throne. I almost didn't go through with it because I would lose Alistair. He is my favorite squad member in DA:O.

Well I was not referring to you specifically. ^_^
I guess vestiges of the original plan must have stuck through.

My mage I am playing now has been very mean to Jowan.... I practically told him shove off .. I wish he wasn't part of the mage "leave the castle" questline

For me it was, by the time I was 32 I had been married for 13 years, had a 13 year old and an 11 year old:) Now it's been 17 years, I have a 17 year old and a 15 year old. I'm definitely middle aged in my mind considering most of our friends our age have very young children and marriages...lol

D'aaww. <3

I know how you feel. Quite frankly said out of those simple reasons (and because I romance Alistair to 98% in my games) Loghain dies every time. I don't want to miss my Alistair, plain and simple.

I can't say that I hate Loghain, exactly, I just don't want him to be in the same camp like me/my character. Lol. Playing it the one time for the achievement and got to know Loghains line was enough for me. Good my Warden hated his guts and fed him to the archdemon with a smile in her face, but it was still bleh. :pinched:

, I don't see why Rica can't be in her 30's (time's running out for her to catch a noble's eye, remember),

Time was running out because Beraht was getting impatient as all the other noble-hunters were finding patrons and she hadn't. It wasn't because she was getting too old. Given that Mardy couldn't find a patron after she has DNM's baby because they thought she 'wasted her fertility' on a casteless baby, if Rica were unable to get pregnant in over a decade then they'd have written her off as well. Given the fertility problems dwarves have and the desperation for noble-hunters to find a noble and have a son, she's going to start fairly young.

You could always go the route that whenever new kids arrive at the Tower they always look to the Warden as a mentor figure because he'd been there so long and Jowan was a bit clingier than most and never moved past that.

Although I am curious why he wouldn't have taken his Harrowing until he was late middle-aged. Wynne's dialogue about her age and yours would be fun, though.

Isn't there a part where Jowan mentions the PC is younger than him? I can't remember that well since I hate the mage origin so much I block most of it from my mind.

Not really, he just says he's been at the tower longer than you.

That too. Sigh. I don't know how I can explain this.
Maybe his harrowing is responsable for him looking so old? Or some magical experiment? I have no idea.

Most likely I will ignore the entire segment and pretend I did the Harrowing long ago (and what was shown is a flashback) and this kid Jowan wants some tips.

That is a really neat idea, I like it!

Considering I've also come up with some contrived explanations for some of my characters (some of them REALLY contrived), I say go for it.

I thought for a moment (after Loghain baffled me with his "don't let anyone tell you you don't belong" comment at Ostagar) that Eilis might spare him this time. Since she's romancing Zevran. But then I remembered she'll have to rescue her father from the slavers thanks to him >.<

Though, I suppose...I could believe it was HOWE'S idea, and Loghain was so wrapped up in his paranoia and guilt and grief by then that he really didn't know what he was agreeing to, and Howe was taking advantage of his clouded mental state.

Ohhh I could also romance Alistair til we find out he's going to be king...how do you end it and get the "still in love"  flag set? And does "still in love" get removed if you trigger another companion's "love" level?

(considers making Eilis the most complicated Warden she's ever played)

Still wouldn't explain why I am in the apprentice quarters :?

Makes me wonder why the game has old skin tones in the first place.

This is how I interpret the situation as well, with Howe being the true responsible for the slavery issue. However, my CE is too appalled about the whole issue and doesn't really think it through, so she kilsl Loghain.
