Yeah, I was hoping that the turnaround was possible. I'm very early into it so I'm still raw from the Vaughan incident. The problem is that *I* know that Alistair and Vaughan are completely different sorts of people, but Lyra (my CEF) does not. All she sees is another human male of somewhat similar appearance who also thinks he's a wit. And her experience with humans in general so far would not lead her to think the best of them anyway. I am trying to play this as much as possible as though I am seeing it through her eyes, i.e., without the sense of perspective that comes from having played it before.
I've gone both ways with this, with 2 different CEF characters. One romanced Alistair and found it (as my Dalish do) a healing thing to find a human man as kind, honorable, and Not-Vaughan as he is. My other CEF just couldn't look at him that way. They became friends and she went with Zevran.
The very first thing that Alistair does that impresses my elven chicks, aside from just being goofy/ nice Alistair, is that he trusts in their leadership. How the hell great is that? All the alpha males can complain about Alistair being a whiner and unmasculine all they want. I think Alistair was written for the elven female.
Of course, I'm a little biased about that.
OK i am thinking that all of you are forgetting the first nice human you encounter who saves you from prison....DUNCAN!!! Hello Grey Warden and then you meet Alistair....Another Grey warden. My CEF found that very redeeming. I tried to be hard towards Alistair but the more you talk the funnier it gets and there is no mistake about who he is and how he feels. You have killed Vaughn and now moving on sice your family is "safe" (as far as you know) So why not move on?
I'm not forgetting Duncan, or Cailan for that matter, who was also polite. But to me Duncan in his role of mentor/deus ex machina/controller of my fate doesn't really count as a personal interaction. Normal social questions just don't apply to him, you know? Kind of like how when you were a kid, you could never really picture your teachers having real lives or acting like "normal" people. And then Cailan is obviously way too excited about the upcoming battle to deal with personal matters beyond "We're going into battle! Aren't you excited?!?" I don't know. But you're right, Alistair is not the
*first* human male the CE interacts with after the Origin story. For that matter, I met Loghain before Alistair too. Loghain remarked that my CE was pretty for a Warden and wondered if I would be fighting in the front lines along with the rest of them, which made my skin crawl (he must also have said this to my DC Warden, I guess, but I don't remember it). And then there's Jory and Daveth, both of whom I spoke with before meeting Alistair. It's just that as I'm trying to look at it from the CE's point of view --i.e., not knowing what kind of human Alistair is and having had a lifetime of negative experience with humans not to mention the recent horrific one-- Alistair is the first man I encounter who, solely based on his race, age, appearance, and class, could have been one of Vaughan's mates that day.
Anyway, your various responses have been very interesting. I still don't think that it's unreasonable to think that a CE in my Warden's position might find herself initially wary of, if not prejudiced against, a human like Alistair, until she gets to know him better. Things are becoming more cordial between them already, though I'm still not sure if a romance will be happening, at least not for a while anyway.
