I may get some hate for saying this but to be honest, I always wished that Sten was an option for a LI instead of just Alistair. Alistair never took much of anything seriously.

.....This is a love thread not a hate thread if you want to talk about how you wished Sten was a LI make it into a topic instead of bringing it in here.

Never took much of anything seriously?  Except his duty?  Love?  Sex?  What he feels in the right thing?  *shrugs*  To each their own, but I think he takes plenty of things seriously.  For me, Sten as  LI would be awful because there is no love there.  He's serious, yes, but his sort of serious makes for very poor relationships.

You know, I don't like Zevran as an li, so I just don't romance him. I don't go into his thread and make comments.....

That said, LadyD is right, not sure what you mean by Alistair not taking things seriously.  Of course compared to Sten, even Loghain is flighty.  LOL

Yeah, I was hoping that the turnaround was possible. I'm very early into it so I'm still raw from the Vaughan incident. The problem is that *I* know that Alistair and Vaughan are completely different sorts of people, but Lyra (my CEF) does not. All she sees is another human male of somewhat similar appearance who also thinks he's a wit. And her experience with humans in general so far would not lead her to think the best of them anyway. I am trying to play this as much as possible as though I am seeing it through her eyes, i.e., without the sense of perspective that comes from having played it before.

I've gone both ways with this, with 2 different CEF characters.  One romanced Alistair and found it (as my Dalish do) a healing thing to find a human man as kind, honorable, and Not-Vaughan as he is.  My other CEF just couldn't look at him that way.  They became friends and she went with Zevran.

The very first thing that Alistair does that impresses my elven chicks, aside from just being goofy/ nice Alistair, is that he trusts in their leadership.  How the hell great is that?  All the alpha males can complain about Alistair being a whiner and unmasculine all they want.  I think Alistair was written for the elven female.
Of course, I'm a little biased about that.  :wizard:

OK i am thinking that all of you are forgetting the first nice human you encounter who saves you from prison....DUNCAN!!!  Hello Grey Warden and then you meet Alistair....Another Grey warden.  My CEF found that very redeeming.  I tried to be hard towards Alistair but the more you talk the funnier it gets and there is no mistake about who he is and how he feels.  You have killed Vaughn and now moving on sice your family is "safe" (as far as you know)   So why not move on?

I'm not forgetting Duncan, or Cailan for that matter, who was also polite. But to me Duncan in his role of mentor/deus ex machina/controller of my fate doesn't really count as a personal interaction. Normal social questions just don't apply to him, you know? Kind of like how when you were a kid, you could never really picture your teachers having real lives or acting like "normal" people. And then Cailan is obviously way too excited about the upcoming battle to deal with personal matters beyond "We're going into battle! Aren't you excited?!?" I don't know. But you're right, Alistair is not the *first* human male the CE interacts with after the Origin story. For that matter, I met Loghain before Alistair too. Loghain remarked that my CE was pretty for a Warden and wondered if I would be fighting in the front lines along with the rest of them, which made my skin crawl (he must also have said this to my DC Warden, I guess, but I don't remember it). And then there's Jory and Daveth, both of whom I spoke with before meeting Alistair. It's just that as I'm trying to look at it from the CE's point of view --i.e., not knowing what kind of human Alistair is and having had a lifetime of negative experience with humans not to mention the recent horrific one-- Alistair is the first man I encounter who, solely based on his race, age, appearance, and class, could have been one of Vaughan's mates that day.

Anyway, your various responses have been very interesting. I still don't think that it's unreasonable to think that a CE in my Warden's position might find herself initially wary of, if not prejudiced against, a human like Alistair, until she gets to know him better. Things are becoming more cordial between them already, though I'm still not sure if a romance will be happening, at least not for a while anyway.

Oh come on, Mary Kirby explicitly said Sten sees the Warden like she's an Alicorn or something. There's romance tension between these two that's thick like cheese. Cheese

(the sound in the background is my hearbroken CE running off to cry. poor thing even went with him back to his homeland at the end)

Well, but you can say the same thing about Morrigan, who I'm told (I've not romanced her) is up for casual sex but quite resistant to actual love. And Zevran as we know will sleep with anything but does not naturally form deep or exclusive attachments. Sten would present a challenge, sure, but would it be that much greater? You can get him to think pretty highly of you in a platonic way; I was also somewhat disappointed that no option existed to add a romantic element to things. Especially if there's an opportunity for bite-down-on-this tent scenes.

Odd how that tension doesn't come across in game.  >.>  I like Sten, don't get me wrong.  But trying to picture a relationship with him?  No.

In a Warden-Commander ending, my PC goes off with Sten.  After losing Alistair, she really can't handle being in Ferelden anymore, and Sten seems like the type to give her the quiet support she would need.

I haven't followed the whole discussion, but I think it's perfectly fine to picture your Warden not reacting rationally, calmly, or in level-headed fashion to a terrible trauma and upheaval of her life.  On my one CEF, I imagined her having a Vaughn flashback when she first saw Alistair because of a vague physical resemblance (edit: and because she came prepared to find the king's camp full of Vaughns).

It's not a rational thing, in fact in my head it was sad/ funny that she was thinking "one wrong move and you get a dagger in the ear" while Alistair is happily prattling on as Alistair does.  It didn't take long before she realized he was more Soris than Vaughn, but becoming vulnerable enough to love/ be loved by a human is part of the dramatic process for an elf character.  And so maybe they never can cross that boundary, or they choose not to.

So many roleplay possibilities.

I think I just got turned off with all his jokes and sometimes... he just sounded way too "emotional" about what was going on instead of trying to set the example of what a Gray Warden should be.  Being as your character is the younger of the wardens, I had expected him to have a more, I don't know, "mentor" type attitude.

One thing I did like about Alistair was that he never had been with a women, not because he didn't have the option, but because he wanted to find the "right" one first.  That's an admirable trait to have.

As for Sten, I just thought some of his comments were really funny.  I should probably mention though that I play a city-elf who, because of the conflict there, is rather tainted against the world so she saw much of Alistairs emotional concerns to be a sign of weakness.  It may not be the best way to view the world but I was trying to hold true to the lore of her character.

In my WC endings, that's exactly what my PC does, as well.  You've got it exactly...Sten gives quiet respect and support, and is an absolute rock.

I thought it worked very much because the things don't ever get spoken. But it'll largely depend on the dialogue choices, too. Some of the bits where Sten tries to grasp if player's character is really a woman can be hysterical... in a very subdued way. If it makes any sense Posted Image

Take a look at this photo and tell me you don't think Sten looks so depressed that he can't have my PC as an optional LI.

You also have to realize that he is only six months ahead of the PC as far as being a Grey Warden.  So as far as setting an example or mentoring...he probably wouldn't know much.  He does share and explain that which he can to the best of his ability.  His habit of deflecting serious talk with humor can be annoying to a point, but when you boil it down, it's merely a survival tactic, (fight or flight).    Yes, he wears his emotions on his sleeve, but also keep in mind that he is just as if not more emotionally raw than the PC.

I dunno, to each their own, I guess.

and my offering for smut Thursday.
