Unfortunate timed screenshot. He's getting up from kneeling.

I think I just got turned off with all his jokes and sometimes... he just sounded way too "emotional" about what was going on instead of trying to set the example of what a Gray Warden should be.  Being as your character is the younger of the wardens, I had expected him to have a more, I don't know, "mentor" type attitude.

One thing I did like about Alistair was that he never had been with a women, not because he didn't have the option, but because he wanted to find the "right" one first.  That's an admirable trait to have.

As for Sten, I just thought some of his comments were really funny.  I should probably mention though that I play a city-elf who, because of the conflict there, is rather tainted against the world so she saw much of Alistairs emotional concerns to be a sign of weakness.  It may not be the best way to view the world but I was trying to hold true to the lore of her character.

We discussed that a lot in the last thread, about how Alistair is pretty sheltered and actually really young in a lot of ways.

tmp:  I just didn't get any sense of anything relationship-wise beyond friendship from Sten.

And back on topic:

As I said upthread in another CEF discussion, I always imagine that Alistair's trust in the PC's leadership is a disarming thing.  A human man actually respects your judgment in a serious matter of military importance... Posted Image

I guess I never get why people object so strongly to Alistair breaking up after Ostagar.  It's a terrible military defeat and for him very personal.  Look at all the Viet Nam or WWII war movies where people crack up over losing comrades.  All in all, Ali takes it pretty level-headed as far as I'm concerned.  But I also tend to picture my PCs being a mess in Ostagar, too (at least internally), so maybe that makes a difference.

For me, Sten as  LI would be awful because there is no love there.  He's serious, yes, but his sort of serious makes for very poor relationships.

Oh come on, Mary Kirby explicitly said Sten sees the Warden like she's an Alicorn or something. There's romance tension between these two that's thick like cheese. Cheese

(the sound in the background is my hearbroken CE running off to cry. poor thing even went with him back to his homeland at the end)

Odd how that tension doesn't come across in game.  >.>  I like Sten, don't get me wrong.  But trying to picture a relationship with him?  No.

In a Warden-Commander ending, my PC goes off with Sten.  After losing Alistair, she really can't handle being in Ferelden anymore, and Sten seems like the type to give her the quiet support she would need.

In my WC endings, that's exactly what my PC does, as well.  You've got it exactly...Sten gives quiet respect and support, and is an absolute rock.

Maybe because I play a lot of mages, but you'd have to bushwhack my PC over the head to get her on a boat to Par Vollen.

No thanks, Sten, see you on the flip side with your horned comrades.

Your character is only the "younger" of the wardens by about six months. Alistair doesn't have have the experience to mentor your warden, he's in the same boat you are. Plus, he has just gone through a very emotional and tramatic loss. You are told outright that there is alot about the wardens he doesn't yet know. However, if you don't behave in a manner that he see befitting a warden he absolutely does let you know.

Actually, most of my wardens view Sten as their mentor, but a romance possibility...idk, but to each his own.Posted Image

You know, you do make an excellent point there.  Considering how most humans treat elves, it does say a good bit towards his level of humility that he was willing to follow the leadership of a women, elf, and most junior Warden.

I haven't followed the whole discussion, but I think it's perfectly fine to picture your Warden not reacting rationally, calmly, or in level-headed fashion to a terrible trauma and upheaval of her life.  On my one CEF, I imagined her having a Vaughn flashback when she first saw Alistair because of a vague physical resemblance (edit: and because she came prepared to find the king's camp full of Vaughns).

It's not a rational thing, in fact in my head it was sad/ funny that she was thinking "one wrong move and you get a dagger in the ear" while Alistair is happily prattling on as Alistair does.

Yeah, exactly. I imagined my CE following Duncan with the attitude of "Okay, human, you seem cool and you're saving my life right now so I'll follow you, but I'm keeping an eye on you and your big human soldier friends, don't forget that. And don't forget that I decapitated the last man that messed with me or my family."

My CE Warden is turning out to be somewhat high-strung and violent. My DC Warden was violent but in a much more deliberate, level-headed way. She and Sten got along well.

Edit: although Alistair is doing less prattling this go-round than he did last time, too. His conversations with my DC were light and bantery from the start, which was exactly what my DC needed after escaping her life in Dust Town. This Alistair is much angrier and much of his sarcasm has a bitter edge to it. But that suits my CE Warden better, anyway.

I'm wondering though, a CE doesn't get the option to marry Alistair at the end does she? My PC and Zevran didn't get along too well so he, um, had an accident.

Not if you make him king.  If he's hardened, you can choose to stay with him as mistress, however.

Before the Ostagar battle, I thought Alistair had a very good "mentor" type attitude.  He was calm, patient, but very firm.  He was a good leader ... probably because he finally had a "family" and his confidence was being restored.  Of course, then the only person who showed him any respect and care was brutally killed, along with his half-brother and the rest of his new family.  So big surprise!  He sounded emotional!

I think the AI that controls Alistair is one of the best I've seen in a game.  It's amazing how many different "Alistairs" can come out of that thing.  I've played through the game numerous times, and the only times I've ever seen an Alistair that acted like a crybaby wimp and a whiner were the times when my warden was a real a** to him during the period when he was at his most vulnerable.  All the other times, he was  supportive, funny and very, very sexy.  I think you pretty much get the Alistair that your warden deserves.

I actually feel the same about Zevran, to a lesser degree.  I really didn't care for that character the first few times I played.  But then I finally decided to go after his romance achievement.  I gave him a face I liked much better, and my warden got to know him.  He still doesn't suit my personal taste, but there's a LOT underneath that he won't reveal without a higher approval.  I actually think he might be the most loyal of all the companions.

Ok, so for dwarf commoners. I think I will make a meeting with sis, after Bhelen is crowned and nothing for Harrowmont? I'm not sure. What does everyone think?

edit: I'm due to update the RatT scene on Saturday, and I'd like to get a private beta of IRS (formerly CRS) up as well.

If Harrowmont is crowned Rica disowns you and says you aren't her sister/brother anymore (though she forgives you by the end of the game) so that seems reasonable.
