The thing, it doesn't really matter. Once he does become addicted, he will be forced to want it.
I really don't think most Templars actually like being addicted. They know that it drives you to weirdness when you get older.
Now I do like that he does question and doesn't just accept what he was told (I wish he could have done that more with the Wardens though, but they became his family, so they are harder to question). But, I don't think it would have made much difference if he did become a Templar.
Now mage killing, I don't know. I think he would kill maleficar. But the harrowing thing, I don't think he'd like it. Whether hewould still follow orders or not, I don't know.

I think he would have. It's not like he really had anywhere else to go, after all. If he was planning on leaving or saw any way out of becoming a templar then he probably wouldn't have still been there when Duncan came by or been so grateful to Duncan for 'saving' him. Besides, we hear in-game a lot about templars and chantry sisters who were given over to the Chantry at a young age (the revered mother Wynne talks about who, when you try to say that at least she had a choice about being there, we're told that she had no choice about being a part of the Chantry) and it really seems like once you enter the Chantry's service one way or another, there's really no way out. Except GW conscription which the revered mother nearly arrested Duncan over. And if Alistair were free to go and could get out of taking his vows, Duncan wouldn't have had to resort to that.How do you think he would handle the prospect of taking his vows? Do you think he'd actually go through with it? Again, assuming Duncan never took him away, of course.

I really think he has a soft spot for mages, probably a bit of lingering reaction against what he might have been forced to become. One reason why I love giving him a nice place to direct that soft spot in the form of a pretty elf mage.
And maybe he's got some instinctive affection for mages because of mom!

I think Cullen had a strong belief in what a Templar was suppose to be and it got warped based on what happend to him. Alistair doesn't have the same conviction, he would have made an effort to be the best templar he could be but I don't see him craking like that.
But Cullen can love a mage. He says it was the one thing he wanted a lot.
I think he was a convinced Templar yes (Alistair is some ways is too, he hates blood magic, though is much more flexible), but he still doe somethign that I don't think Templars are supposed to do. Aka have strong feelings towards a mage.

Nope. Alistair says quite clearly what would have happened, he would have gone postal and slaughtered them all... In his smallclothes, a la "Full Metal Jacket"... [I think he was probably bullied, like the character in that movie...] Even Morrie was impressed with that...

For me it's simply this ... I am loyal in and out of game to my friends,family and loved ones. I could NEVER betray Alistair like that. For a few reasons.
What would the rest of my group think if I betrayed him then I could do it to one of them???

I believe that Lohgain wasn't in his right mind thru alot of this. That doesn't mean I should pat him on the back and say Welcome Friend!

I've always thought the ensorcelled templar you find in Broken Circle is meant to suggest what Alistair might have become. Trying to be a templar but just not being able to be a team player such that eventually the templars decide he's not worth it, Alistair meanwhile secretly wanting a family so badly that he can never quite substitute duty as the "well adjusted" templars do.

I have to disagree with you, but it's a matter of interpretation. To me, his tone and expression while debating what to do with the maleficar in the tower with Leliana indicate that he thinks she should be killed. His feelings about Jowan may be more mixed, but I don't see that with the maleficar. He also sees the Jowan situation as unusual.Addai67 wrote...

I also don't recall that he says that he personally killed the mage in the failed harrowing. He was observing and not a full templar.
