I was always under the impression that he had a very confusing upbringing - the arl and he didn't talk much, and yet Eamon brought him gifts (the golem doll, though it could be argued that was an adult...I always thought it was childhood).
Yeah, he slept in the kennels in Denerim, but what noble brings a servant boy to Denerim with him anyways, unless Eamon brought his entire household, which seems unlikely since he had a separate set of staff in Denerim in game? So Alistair got to travel, but then was treated poorly.
I suspect he was treated half like a son and half like the so-called bastard son of a servant. Teagan does say, after all, that Eamon "raised" him, as if he had a personal hand in Alistair's upbringing.
So yeah, the short is very confusing - half like he was important and half like he wasn't and not sure if he should care or not about Eamon, being the only semi-father figure he knew. I think being sent to the Chantry was kind of like getting kicked out of the house....and kind of not, since he sorta belonged but always knew that he didn't really. Heartbreaking...
Eamon could've bought Alistair the golem doll as an adult? O.o I always thought that was when he was a kid, too. He says he was young in the dialogue.
Yeah, Eamon taking him with to Denerim (and that possibly being the trip where he bought him a gift, as well) is one of the main things that make me think he didn't have it
too bad in the beginning. I'm not saying he lived in the lap of luxury - far from it - but I don't think he had a particularly horrible childhood. We know that he was made to sleep in the kennels at some points, but I don't think that, in Ferelden, that's as terrible treatment as we see it today. It may not be excellent treatment, or that befitting a bastard prince, but I don't think it would have been seen as abuse.
Sooo... I'm thinking he was treated somewhat like a page, since I'm sure Eamon would have had him somewhat educated (foreseeing future usefulness, perhaps) and we know he took him with on at least one trip and got him at least one gift. Perhaps the sleeping in the stables was influenced by Isolde? Hmm... *goes off to brainstorm*
