Don't you HATE that?  It generally happens to me in the middle of a boss fight that I've had to re-do 12 times already since I'm a stickler for not allowing any deaths in my playthroughs.  Ugh!

Edit for ToP....

Here's Alistair staring at my Wardens... umm... ears.  Yeah, ears.

Really? Wow, I'd be playing for ever if I didn't allow any deaths. . .

. . .although my total number of deaths is going down with each playthrough. My 2nd Warden wound up with a higher personal number of deaths but that was due to (a) sacrificing herself in suicidal Stealth missions to take out Emissaries and other key enemies that would otherwise have KOed her comrades, and (2) a higher survival rate for the party if my Warden died. In my first playthrough, if my Warden KOed, my party was pretty much toast and I would be reloading my last save. In my second playthrough, I could usually finish off a battle playing as someone else if my Warden died. In this playthrough, I just make sure to kill everything really fast before it has a chance to kill us. That's worked pretty well.

Edit for ToP....

Very cute picture!

Sorry if this has already been mentioned.  Since I'm on my really slow computer this week, I'm having a hard time keeping up with the threads.

 LOVE  the fact that the new version of Random Age now automatically loots all your kills except for the ones who have the special items on them.  It saves so much time!

I'm ready to try it again.  I understand your penchant for no deaths, since I used to have a 'thing' about no damage to my character.  Somehow I've gotten past that in this game, but I'm still a stickler for a perfect Redcliffe battle.  Omg, I forgot about that until now, I left it for last after doing all the treaties....lol, this is going to be fun with the RavAGE settings.

Oh noes. :crying:

Edit:  I don't want to see 'Wild Drakes' on the Deep Roads bridge again, they were nasty!

Hello, Alistair thread! It's Thursday here! ^_^

I was going to do drive-by smut, but my screenshot folder is sadly lacking right now. So I will offer some sexytimes fanart.

Image IPB

And I know what you're thinking, but believe it or not, it isn't Aimo's latest masterpiece. B)

Now that the weird part of my post is over (sorry, it's 2:30 in the morning :pinched:), I need info for a ficlet I'm working on. Are there any hints as to what Alistair's childhood was like at Redcliffe? I know he slept in the kennels at Denerim, but he must have sort of liked staying at the castle somewhat if he screamed at the arl when he was sent to the Chantry. (Or does that have more to do with his feelings toward the Chantry than living at the castle?)

TL;DR - What's the general feeling about Alistair's childhood pre-Chantry? I got the impression he was treated like one of the young servants, or a page.

I was always under the impression that he had a very confusing upbringing - the arl and he didn't talk much, and yet Eamon brought him gifts (the golem doll, though it could be argued that was an adult...I always thought it was childhood).

Yeah, he slept in the kennels in Denerim, but what noble brings a servant boy to Denerim with him anyways, unless Eamon brought his entire household, which seems unlikely since he had a separate set of staff in Denerim in game? So Alistair got to travel, but then was treated poorly.

I suspect he was treated half like a son and half like the so-called bastard son of a servant. Teagan does say, after all, that Eamon "raised" him, as if he had a personal hand in Alistair's upbringing.

So yeah, the short is very confusing - half like he was important and half like he wasn't and not sure if he should care or not about Eamon, being the only semi-father figure he knew. I think being sent to the Chantry was kind of like getting kicked out of the house....and kind of not, since he sorta belonged but always knew that he didn't really. Heartbreaking...

Yeah, this is the first game I've ever wanted to learn how to fight better as well as the only one I've ever played on any setting other than easy.  However, I do use one sort of cheat which is using the AIS Emporium mod so I can have unlimited pots.  I try to make do with the pots I have Morrigan make, but I always have a backup stack of potent health and mana pots just in case I run out of regular ones (and money to make more).  But, that's only so I don't have to run around with Wynne in my party the entire time since I like to rotate companions for the sake of variety.

And yeah... my elf wasn't too impressed with Alistair's roaming eyes at that stage, but she warmed up to him eventually... (like that's any big surprise, right?)

I had one of those show up in the Korcari Wilds once, boss level and everything.  I think I spent over an hour getting through that fight.

I've only ever played on Normal (though have been tempted to switch temporarily to Easy in a couple of spots). I find that the Fade has been a good exercise in learning to fight better. When you're on your own like that, you kind of have to learn how to handle yourself. :police: I'm playing a Mage this time which means I can technically heal people, except I've never played a healer in any game ever, DA:O or otherwise, so it's taken me a while to remember to pay attention to the other characters' health or anything other than just killing whatever was in front of me. Although as I said, many times the best defense is a good offense, and you don't need to worry about using healing or defensive spells or a lot of poultices or anything if you just kill everything really, really fast. My Mage is better at that than I had expected her to be and she's recently picked up an extra weapon that helps her kill things faster than ever.

Was there a specific point in your elf's journey that she caved to Alistair's wiles, or was it kind of an attrition? I've had Wardens enter relationships with him both ways: the sudden "Awww. . ." and the gradual breaking down of her defenses. The latter one was an elf.

^ Ouchie. And on top of that, your Warden appears to have just taken an arrow through the neck.

What are those things on the right that either look like they're bent double, or have no torsos?

Eamon could've bought Alistair the golem doll as an adult? O.o I always thought that was when he was a kid, too. He says he was young in the dialogue.

Yeah, Eamon taking him with to Denerim (and that possibly being the trip where he bought him a gift, as well) is one of the main things that make me think he didn't have it too bad in the beginning. I'm not saying he lived in the lap of luxury - far from it - but I don't think he had a particularly horrible childhood. We know that he was made to sleep in the kennels at some points, but I don't think that, in Ferelden, that's as terrible treatment as we see it today. It may not be excellent treatment, or that befitting a bastard prince, but I don't think it would have been seen as abuse.

Sooo... I'm thinking he was treated somewhat like a page, since I'm sure Eamon would have had him somewhat educated (foreseeing future usefulness, perhaps) and we know he took him with on at least one trip and got him at least one gift. Perhaps the sleeping in the stables was influenced by Isolde? Hmm... *goes off to brainstorm*

I think it's more of Eamon not really knowing what to do with Alistair.  He's got the king's bastard as a ward, but no one's supposed to know he's the king's bastard.  So give the kid some attention and maybe an early education....but make him sleep in the stables cause he's supposed to be no one important.  Keep him close when going to Denerim....but make him sleep in the kennels because it would have been inappropriate for him to be in the keep proper, etc. etc.

It seems like they went to Denerim often - Alistair says Eamon spent the winters there, implying that it was a fairly regular thing.

I don't really think Isolde was involved in much more than Alistair being made to feel (even more) not at home and his eventually sending to the Chantry.  I think most of it was just Eamon's awkwardness, which probably made Isolde even more suspicious, else why would he treat a servant boy with any sort of attention?

I've said several times that Eamon seems to be a character with the best intentions who repeatedly fails miserably at accomplishing anything actually good.

Morrigan was the only one to survive the standing, along with her undead companion (of course).  Lol, this is Alistair right before he fell.  Nothing like a little earthquake on top of at least two Inferno spells.  There was a whole herd of darkspawn mages there, of every sort, from emissaries to necromancers.  Lol, nasty, but so much fun.

Oh yeah, I think Alistair was grateful for it too - in that sort of period it something horrifically awful, and probably par for the course for his supposed lot in life.  Stables, haylofts, kitchen floors, etc.

I think the confusing part is in how Eamon treated him - he lives like a servant but then gets toys from the arl himself?  And why would a common servant boy get to go to the "big city", even if he does have to sleep in the kennels?  Given that Ferelden is such a dog-revering culture I suspect the kennels was a good sight nicer than the stables, but it's the fact that he traveled with the arl to the city like he belonged to the family that would be odd.

Alistair had to do some work to get that one's attention.  She admired the way he stood up for her to Goldanna.

My elves always fall for him, and whether they're attracted from the first meeting or after much wooing, the thing that always impresses them is that when they first meet, Alistair doesn't comment on her being an elf.  He is the very first shem they meet that doesn't seem to care about their race and regardless of how opposed they may be to this whole GW thing, that leaves a lasting mark on their hearts.

My humans are generally all over him from the getgo.  One or two have played hard to get, but even with them it's just play.

My dwarves fall hard for his charm.  They're the one's who always swoon the most when he tells them they're beautiful because they usually feel anything but attractive in a world of tall, slender humans.
