Wow JJs post was so bad Im trying to reply from a moving car and no I'm not driving. Someone who has exhibited mostly troll like behavior since showing up here isn't really in a position to tell someone lime LadyJ what is or isn't okay here. If you can't think of anything intelligent and civil to say please stay out of the discussion.

Not to try to generate sympathy or change anyone's mind, but I believe if there is one character who suffered the most as a child, it would be Loghain.

I do believe and can't even come close to imagining it, that the most horrifying thing one can do to a child is to force him to watch his mother get raped and killed while he is helpless and powerless to do anything about it.

A big reason why I admire Loghain is that he was not really broken by this and he never used it or told us about it, not even hinted at it, to earn sympathy. Others would have been shattered utterly by this.

So your arguments re Loghain are also sentimental.

No he just internalized it and allowed it to make sick, bitter, self-centered and unreliable and fuel his irrational hatred of all things orlesian... Or which he perceives to be orlesian which is not exactly the same.

Maria,

After witnessing that, amongst many other horrors during the occupation, I'd not call it irrational. Was it irrational of the Gauls to loathe the Romans? Sure, we could tell him to get some therapy or some such enlightened idea. I do not know what being forced to watch THAT would do to me. So I won't judge him.

Congratulations Alistair, you are officially a Douchebag.

That was uncalled for, if you have nothing to contribute, stay quiet.

It's okay, this thread derails all the time. Someone who can read can look in here and jump pages and can figure that out.

Yes,  it derails. But if you'd have read further, you'd know we don't resort to using foul, disrespectful, or otherwise ignorant names towards each other, or the character who inspired this thread. It was the same in the first Alistair thread which surpassed 2000 pages. The point is not what people can read, it is your behaviour...calling the character names in his own thread it trollish and unneccessary. So either contribute intelligently to the discussion, or go play with your toys elsewhere.

This. In my humble opinion our discussion is going very well and I'd love to keep it that way. Maybe she intended it as a joke. A joke in poor taste, I grant you.

Sorry. Do you have that situation where you frequent multiple forums? Some things are okay on some forums, and some things are okay on other forums? That situation sucks. You get banned from alot of forums with that situation. Don't accuse me of looking for sympathy because I'm not.

What Loghain and Ferelden suffered at the hands of the Orlesians is all the more reason for him not to toss away the things which make Ferelden better than Orlais - the rights of it's citizens.

LOL really? THIS is your defense? I have been on various forums for about 10 years now, and they pretty much all follow one single rule. Be respectful, and you won't get banned.  And the only people that do the banning around here? are Bioware employees and moderators, usually for name callling, and disrespect I believe:P

Whose rights? The elves? I don't know. The only glimpse we have of the Alienage is of a Lord treating them like....er...I'll not repeat his words. And the guards don't care one bit unless you slay said Lord. But then you'll be imprisoned/condemned. Not a word about rights of the elves being violated. Despite the capital offences of rape & murder. And the abduction with the intent to rape them all. :(

Well, considering the forums I've been frequenting for awhile are basically internet mosh pits, I'd say it's a decent defense.

In life or death, ideals like this matter little and are thrown out the window.

Reminds me of the chapter discussing the plague Athens suffered in Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian war. How conventions and norms broke apart and had no more meaning in that situation.

And let's face it, the elves barely had any rights in practise to be begin with.

Actually this is a pretty good moral argument.  What kind of Ferelden is Loghain fighting for if he turns a blind eye to slavery, rape and kidnapping? By so doing he is no better than the orleisians he so despises...

If we are going to start blaming people for turning a blind eye, I suggest we start blaming Maric (who ruled for a few decades) and Cailan.

To me, Loghain's (and Anora's as well, in her own way) major problem is that he believes that only he knows what's best for Ferelden.  Thus he can justify to himself abandoning the king, selling elves into slavery, allowing Howe to do some very sleazy things, blame the Wardens for everything, etc.  He did it because he had to to save Ferelden - it's a very noble idea gone very wrong because of his paranoia and inability to trust anyone else with the job.

Anora seems to have inherited this from her father, minus the Orlesian paranoia, of course.  That's the major reason why most of my Wardens pick Alistair for king - he doesn't believe the world revolves around him and is willing to ask for help in ruling.  That might argue that Anora and Alistair are an excellent pair to lead the country - certainly Ferelden prospers for it, but I just really can't stand Anora and feel bad making Alistair marry her.  :P
