So I finally read An Unkind Fate and wow, that was some pretty heavy stuff. It kind of makes me want to play DA again because my impression of Alistair is so radically different from the way LadyD writes him. I can't help but wonder if there's a side of him I've missed somehow.
I wouldn't have expected him to be so strong and mature about the situation tbh, given the way I remember him reacting to adversity in DAO.
Still it was pretty powerful for something so short. Then again I don't think LadyD's ever written anything I didn't like... minus the DR short.
Oh noooo! The world will be sucked into a black hole if you do that.Giggles_Manically wrote...
Addai is Alistair in Shade Leather Armour, or Shadow Warden armour?
I mainly keep him as a tank, but may try to turn him into a dual wielder.

Oh I know about him taking the final blow. That's a bit different than facing execution at Loghain's orders though.sylvanaerie wrote...
Play a PC who romances him and then don't do the DR and take him to the roof with you. You will see a side to him you have missed.

I did that once, with my elf mage who romanced him and didnt make him king.sylvanaerie wrote...

No it isn't. If you hear what he is actually saying. Have you done it? Or just know of it?
I see where you're coming from. I think (in part because of game mechanics) we spend so much time in game comforting our allies, that it strikes me as odd to see it written the other way around. I'm so used to Alistair being totally dependant on my PC it's hard to imagine him actually being the "rock" so to speak. Especially in relation to anything involving Loghain.LadyDamodred wrote...
About him being to strong and mature, look at how he reacts when killing the archdemon if you turned down the DR, especially when he and PC are in love. There is absolutely no hesitation in him. The PC is more important than his own life. He will not let them die when he can do it for them, and he does it with a smile because he knows that the PC is going to live.
In the story, he's scared of dying. I challenge anyone to be anything other in that situation. But he's more afraid of Lya being hurt and suffering. That's why he gains a measure of peace at the end, because he knows she's safe.
Haven't done it. But the situations are very different. In one he is heroically sacrificing himself by his own will, to protect someone he loves and fulfil his duty. In the other, he is being killed, on orders from a man he despises for no greater purpose (in LadyD's story Lya is spared on Anora's orders, not because of Alistair's sacrifice).sylvanaerie wrote...

Haha I did that too, especially the first time I romanced Leliana because her dialogue completely flatlines after you bed her. I do like your take on him though. I wish there were more opportunities to see that side of him in gameLadyDamodred wrote...
Yeah, I rp a lot in my head, so that probably alters things a bit. But I try to make sure that all the rp is grounded in solid characterizations and makes sense.
Hmm, wouldn't his drunken ex-warden ending fit in that category?LadyDamodred wrote...

For some people, I can see that being an issue. Some people face death peacefully and with pride if it involves going out a hero. There are those for whom the disgrace and humiliation are harder to deal with than their deaths. Alistair doesn't strike me as either of those. On the rooftop, when not romanced or friendly, he will choose to do his duty and die, but it's not done with any joy. With a romanced PC, he says that going out if a hero is not the reason he's doing it.
He doesn't want to die, but his primary concern is the woman he loves. Once he knows she'll be safe (relatively), then he's somewhat content. He still doesn't want to die or let Loghain win, but his biggest fear has be alleviated.

Can't cut the poor boy a break, eh?LadyDamodred wrote...
Yes, in a way. I just did a rewrite of my first fic, Second Chance, that featured exile!Alistair and, oh boy, is he ever angry.
Fair enough. That is a different situation, though. In Unkind Fate, he really only has hours left to live and he's not going to waste them on being angry. In Second Chance, he's got to deal with living with betrayal and anger.

I imagine the US scene (if you were to continue the story of Unkind Fate) would be amaaaaazingly powerful. *wink, wink, nudge, nudge*
Kind of Shakespearean, no?LadyDamodred wrote...
You mean where if I were to continue the story and have Lya slay the archdemon? I don't know if it would be "amaaaaazingly powerful." In my head, it would just be very, very, very sad. It would be a relief, I'd think.

With Alistair dead and Loghain not going through the joining, the DR can't happen. So US is the only option!

Maybe Riordan is a little less crazy reckless and makes the final blow himself. Or maybe Morrigan lied and really wanted Alistair soooooooo bad she wouldn't let PC make the choice of alistair to sleep with him and Riordan will do the DR. Yea I am feeling particularly evil tonight
