Oh I know he says it in many other ways...such as..telling Eamon he wants to kill Anora

I love his romance to bits. And personally I'm a little of both:)

I still laugh when I remeber hearing my sister get dumped by Alistair.

Me and my dad were watching one of the Bourne films, in the living room, and the computer she was on, was right behind the couch pretty much.

Why didn't she pick "rule beside  him"?

I don't know about Giggles's sister but for my first playthrough, I saw that option and decided not to choose it, thinking I'd rather wait and have him come propose after I'd made him king.  Considering my first PT was a DE, I'm really glad I was spared the embarrassment of being rejected publicly.  :crying:

The latter. I am just talking about the writing and misinterpreting where I thought the story was supposed to go. It was just making a bigger deal than necessary about the subject of love so I just assumed that was supposed to be the payoff. The Witch Hunt DLC made a big deal about uncovering secrets and turns out there weren't really any (other than the romance angle). It's the same thing. The Alistair story seemed to make a big deal about staying together no matter what. The Zevran story seemed to make a big deal about defining the relationship. See what I'm saying? It's not about the actual words, but the expectations that seem to arise along the way. That's all. I don't care that he doesn't say it, FYI.

Alistair says it like 4 times.

"You're a true friend and I...I love you" (Outside Goldanna's)
"Have I told you that I love you? I did? Well it won't kill you to hear it again" (after the tent)
"See? THIS is why I love you" (One smart comment and I'll feed them to the darkspawn, post tent)
"And I love you. Always." (at the gates)

One of these he has to be unhardened, two are funny/ offhand, and one is in response to the PC saying it and is at the end of the game.  So it's still pretty limited.  I'm ok with the three words being scarce.

I've gotten all four in single playthroughs with him. Zev shows it, and proposes, which Alistair doesn't. So I guess it evens out. But omg hat a tease Gaider is.

"You know I love you"
"I...I know that"

OMG SO CLOSE!!!

I know!!  But see, the payoff is in that tension, and in the painfully obvious fact that he wants to say it and just can't.  Once again I marvel at how much can be communicated with facial animation and a talented voice actor.

@Jess, even though Alistair is still my main squeeze in DAO, I love my Mrs. Arainai too.  I love that she can be called Mrs. Arainai, and that they are off having adventures and maybe an adorable elven baby.  I even love that their lives could end tragically, if only that Zevran has to help her die before the taint takes her.

Oh yeah that tension is something else. And they put the expressions across his face so perfectly.  It's like he wants so badly to say the words, but knows she may die. Almost as if he's thinking if he doesn't verbalize it, it won't hurt as much if he loses her. As much as it would be awesome to have him say it back, I think it would ruin that moment. I just wish there was a wedding mod for Zev. There was one in the works but I haven't heard anything about it for quite a while.

I wish almost that I hadn't installed ZevASAP. I kinda miss the days when it was just my PC and Alistair all that time and then BAM here comes the monkey wrench. And he arrives late, so you're just hitting the climax of the game, and suddenly there's romantic drama!

I can't even pick a favorite romance. They're tied for first in my book. But I have to alternate between the two. Alistair's for the squishy, heart on his sleeve all out adoration from the word go, and Zev for the Onion effect.

Heh, I'm ready for new romances in DA2. I'd have totally dumped both Alistair and Zevran for Nathaniel. <3

I have a Cousland that would have for sure. She's at Vigil's Keep talking to Loghain at the moment.

Gah, that's the worst part about the gates dialog being bugged.. Zevran really is so loving there.

then again, my favorite line;

Warden: Don't say your goodbyes just yet.
Zevran: Of course not. Wherever you go, I will gladly follow.

*squee*

Of course, Morrigan had a bad bug there as well, and her best line didn't show.

Edit; Hmmm, sorry, I turned into the wrong thread.  I think I want to be three doors down :)

Image IPB  Yes, it's weird that I'm in Loghain squee mode, but what can I say.

I love Nathaniel, too.  I suppose I can be hooked by another Gaider romance, despite all my skepticism over DA2.  The man has some sort of shady blood magic ritual he must do before he writes a romantic story line.  Freaking mind control.

In the vanilla game, if you leave her at the gates she says, "Go.  Slay your archdemon, my love."  But it's how she says it, she sounds close to tears, with her voice breaking at "my love."

Edit: That is, she doesn't say it, but she should.

@Gilsa, I think the rationale is that the words "I love you" can be very cheap, especially for someone like Zevran who has used words, seduction, etc. to manipulate. Not even Alistair says "I love you" except in certain limited dialogue circumstances. IMO Gaider avoids this as cliche'd. That would be my guess, anyway.

Another place Alistair will say it is if you ask him about your future before the landsmeet.  "I love you.  You know that, right?  But if I'm to be King..."

Lol, this is why I like playing new characters when there are new romances. There's inevitably gonna be an awesome character I'm gonna want to throw my PC at, but I'll have already romanced someone in the previous game. Then I feel bad about making my toon a player ._. I imagine it makes for tasty drama later but I feel like a total jerkass.

Well, Zevran WILL call a warden "my love" if he leaves after he falls in love. But who wants to see THAT?

I'm stupidly excited about hitting the reset button in DA2. New character (ooh, new hairstyles, maybe?), new romances, new drama! Since DG said that each romance (except for Morrigan until the DLC) all have their own closure, it feels like the book is closed on DAO and we're moving forward to a new book. You know, like those romance books where one is about two specific people, but the next book is about someone that knows those two specific people and the romance is now about her and someone else instead or the romance is about the child of the original couple who is now finding love with someone else. You know the kind of books I'm talking about? You only see the original couple mentioned if they showed up for dinner or a ball in the background. =p

Not me! After Taliesen I do make HIM admit he wants a reason to stay. Watching him struggling to ask if she wants him to stay while trying to wrap his head around the fact that he has a choice is sweet. Especially since way back in the early stages he had even asked if there was "someone he might stay for" after your quest is over. Which he asked quite easily in fact.

I really liked the change in the romanced Zevran you see after the landsmeet.

Its impressive to see just how many times he has these moments that he is trying to say what he wants but just cant.

While I like Steve V's delivery on Alistair, Zevran I like a bit more really in the VO department at the end.

That being said Steve V's delivery when he refuses to let the warden die is pretty amazing.

I hate to do it, but I think my Tabris will hear that. I wonder if the TMP scene kicks in with a f!warden that has broken up with Alistair but he has the "still in love" flag set. I believe that occurs if you break up with him using "but you're going to be king" line in camp.

Well my other little sister romanced Zevran, and plans on playing again to romance Alistair over christmas break.

But as for that sister, Dragon Age is dead for her.

I'm very pragmatic and unromantic (I just asked my husband and he confirmed that) and for some odd reason Alistair's romance is just right for me. I find some of the romance dialogue is a bit cringe-worthy but the overall approach is fine for me. He's a bit insecure but still open about his feelings, yet he doesn't make big promises about the future (with good reason). Things can and will go terribly wrong ... and I'm a sucker for bittersweet or tragic endings.

Zevran is a bit too much for me. The former killer with a past of abuse and understandable relationship issues who finds in you his one true love and wants to spend the rest of his live only with you is too fairy-tale-ish for my tastes.

@Gilsa
I'm glad, too, that DA2 will have a different main character. Yay, new romance options! :D
And if I started Awakening on a fresh or unromanced character I'd go for Nathaniel.
