Bioware: DA2...oooh, shiny! *drops DA:O in the mud and runs off*

*sigh* Anyone else feeling like it's time to move on to another game?

Problem is, there aren't any other games that bring what DA:O brought to the table. I'm thinking it's up to the modders now, or it will be after the DLC.
The companions would have to be voiceless, though, unless Bioware took pity and gave us a DLC of random dialogue. ;) Can't see them doing that, though. They won't even pay for the actors in their own DLCs

I'm disappointed that our wardens were one-shot characters, but I get my continunity fix from Mass Effect instead. Same romantic interest in all three games, etc. It's very different from Dragon Age: Origins, but I'm pleased that I still see familiar faces and I am stoked to see how it all ends in ME3. I am very fond of my Commander Shepard as a result. I have been very frustrated that Dragon Age has not only given me heart-breaking stories, it's not really providing closure with the way we ended the game and our journey pretty much ends in two weeks. :(

I will still buy DA2, but I really hope they learned what they needed to learn from Dragon Age: Origins and move forward with a tighter focus. I would not be surprised if Hawke becomes the new character that connects DA2 to all the rest of their games. (Since that is their marketing goal and all.)

I'm a little annoyed that David Gaider considers that all non-Morrigan romances got closure in DAO. Yes, she leaves. But, if you play Awakening, Leliana and Zevran leave AND you're separated from Alistair. And then everyone just disappears without explanation. I really don't see how that's closure.

Which would mean never playing an elf or dwarf in future games?  I'm tired of Hawke already.

New post from DG:

It just feels like this is the conclusion the story of men who romanced Morrigan.

Consider this:

If you're looking on this only from the romance perspective, out of all the romances in Dragon Age Morrigan's is the only one you never get any personal closure on. Not even a little bit. I understand wanting more from Alistair, Zevran and Leliana but you do at least get something from them... whereas from Morrigan you get nothing (albeit for very good reasons).

So for those men who romanced Morrigan, you might want to cut them some slack.

That said, that's not the only reason to do this DLC-- I would think many people would be curious as to what the future holds regarding Morrigan. And, yes, it takes all the various ending states of Origins into account. And, yes, in case anyone's wondering I wrote the Morrigan part.

I'm extremely disappointed right now, and I think they were stupid to tell us we had 2 years of stuff to look forward to.  Sorry, but I am not buying the answer that DA2 is part of that!  But I'll still buy this one and DA2.  errant_knight is right.  I haven't found anything that compares, and yes it's the modders that are keeping Origins alive.  So I'll keep playing this until I'm bored with looking at this face.

I think that is truly why people are upset, the ending slides in Awakening.  I'm not askign for my Wardens story to be continued ad infinitum, but some clouse would be nice.  i.e.

"PC returned to Denerim and Alistair, where she took up her duties as queen beside Alistair/lived with her love/etc.../PC and Alistair settled at Vigil's Keep, rebuilding the Wardens/PC and Alistair went adventuring."
"PC and Zevran returned to Antiva and took over the Crows/PC and Zevran continued adventuring and lived free of the Crows/etc..."
"PC and Leliana went to Orlais, PC and Leliana stayed at court in Denerim/etc..."

You get my point.  Just something that wraps it up even the teensiest bit instead of "And they disappeared!"

That would make me write the franchise off entirely--except for DA:O. I'm close to it now.

Interesting bit from a David Gaider interview.

I remember Alistair actually is one on Origins I really enjoyed writing just because, most people don’t know this, but we had an entire version of Alistair where he was this grim, veteran warrior. Older and just a very serious type who was very distrustful of you and he wasn’t much fun.
Nobody was liking him because he was being so distrustful. We really wanted to set this up as a romance interest as well as a good buddy for a male player and it wasn’t working.
It was really touching on that Carth (A KOTOR character Gaider also wrote) vibe a little bit much but he really hit a bad note with the male players. So, it came down as one of those revisions where we just couldn’t fix him. There’s something fundamentally wrong here so I had to go back and go, ‘alright how about I just have a little bit more fun with him and maybe the player will too.’ And so I did.
Even though it was painful to make the decision to start all over, it really worked out well I thought. I think Alistair and the fact that he’s fun really came across. He was quite a popular character.

From here.  I'm really glad we got the Alistair we got and not the Loghainistair that was originally conceived!

I agree with Errant, no other game compares to DAO. This is extremely disappointing to me. I am a console gamer at heart, and actually have just ordered a few new PS3 games. I am going to playthrough with 1 more human noble female, then I'm moving on. EA has left a bad taste in my mouth even prior to DAO, and this just adds to it.

To clarify, "this" being the fact that not long ago we were promised 2 years of DLC, and now they change their tune. Also, I am happy with WHAT this new dlc is. Just not that it's the last.

Really? Gaider has pretty much consistently come to Alistair's defense and seems to like Al a lot. I don't think he doesn't know...

I think he likes the character well enough from everything I've seen, including that quote.  He just doesn't get to decide (solely) what is put in games.  In that same interview he is asked about the possibility of seeing Maric in a game.  So of course my puppy dog ears perk up.  His answer is basically that he'd love to do it, and feels like a lot of the characters aren't finished in his own mind, but he's not sure how it would work or be received.

It's infuriating, really  >:|

And again this is not helpful for me to develop a tiny bit of love for DA 2. Quite the opposite. Honestly, if it not were for my loooong FF, I probably would have moved on to another game long ago. Since Awakening (which wasn't the prime either), DA:O is on the downfall and the DLC were all carelessly patched together. I liked Leliana's song, but even that was just a recycle of old locations and such.

Well at least have I reason to play my HNM on then, to complete the Morrigan story with him. Le sigh.

He did say specifically that it was male players who weren't reacting well to the sour, mistrustful Alistair.  Too much challenge to their alpha male status as PC, I gather.  And now some of those same guys complain about Alistair being a weak whiner.  *chuckle*  I mean, just look at the rage about the one time that Alistair won't back down, and carry that through the game?  The rage, the rage, I can't imagine it.  Loghain is well received as a companion because he's a whipped dog at that point, the PC has his boot on his neck and he just folds and does a 180 on everything he's said up to that point.

Male players are obviously where the money is, so we have to live with it, fortunately for us it all worked out with Alistair.  Posted Image

Strangely enough I dont find any Bioware Male NPC whiny.

Carth- Because saying: I held my dead wife, and screamed for help with my son gone as well, all because my hero, and friend bombed my home as a traitor. - HOW IS THAT WHINY?

Kaidan- Guy is like calm and relaxed the whole game, and tells you I moved on from my training.

Alistair- While it can be interperted as whiny, I more see what he was doing was from his shock and trying to sort his life out. In the end he matures to a great deal, unless you spare Loghain.

Also as a male gamer I take offence to be painted with the "Cant take a challenge Alpha Male" brush. I actually like in games when people dont just go along with you. Mainly why I like Wrex, Shale, or Alistair.

The only reason I dont like the Redcliffe scene is that he says killing Connor is an option and perferable. Then if you do that he howls about it, I know why he does it, dosent change the fact that he goes on about it like its all the PCs fault.
