At first I detested Bhelen. (wait)
Then the more into history I read the more I started to pick up on how like some of the greats acted.
Bhelen would make a really cool Emperor.

Or at least he should be able to after Dain Aeducan helped him (mine):
Has the Anvil
Has the aid of Fereldan troops
Has apostates through Dagna
Using his reforms.

So yeah that ending is all great for the dwarves. Too bad Dain put Zevran and Leliana over each of his shoulders hopped onto his magical mabari, and kicked it into Ludicorus Speed. 

Last anyone in Fereldan saw of him was a plaid trail going over the Frostbacks.

I agree that, out of the two candidates, Bhelen gets far better results for the dwarves, and Harrowmount is basically an incompetent ruler.  This is one of those things that makes me want to strangle Bioware for putting my character in this position!  Because I think Bhelen is a despicable man and Harrowmount is a kind man with good intentions.  

Harrowmount never would have been putting himself up for the crown if it wasn't for the promise he made to Endrin.  He is doing what he thinks is honorable in trying to keep Bhelen off the throne.  He's a kindly weak, old man who makes a terrible king!  And for those reasons, I usually try to ignore Bhelen's sliminess and give him the crown.  But damn Bioware makes that mean that Harrowmount gets executed!  I hate that!!!  

I just couldn't have my Aeducan side with Bhelen.  She grew up knowing Harrowmount and she trusted him.  Also he was the only one who gave her a kind word when she was exiled, even though he was too weak and helpless to do anything about it.  Plus she knew Bhelen.  

Damn you, Bioware!

And to bring the subject of my post back to Alistair ... His line that he says when we give the crown to Harrowmount is one of two times in the game where I just don't believe Steve Valentine's line reading.  The other was outside the Tower of Ishal.

tupp, my Aeducan still put Bhelen on the throne. He figured it belonged to his family, and respected Bhelen for taking advantage of a situation. (Mine killed Trian) He felt that even though Harrowmont was a good and decent man, he was always a follower and not a leader. Orzammar needed a leader.

The world could not handle a Gaider/KoP spawn running around.

It's metagaming on my part.  Even though I knew that Bhelen was corrupt, I still might have had my Aeducan give him the throne if I (the player) didn't know that he would kill kindly old Harrowmount.  But he was like an uncle to Penelope.  I just couldn't have her watch him get dragged away to be executed.  Most of my other wardens give the throne to Bhelen, but I always feel like I need a bath after doing it, it makes me feel so dirty.

And why did Endrin have an advisor (was Harrowmount also his second?) who was so ... feeble?  I think that's the right word. And it was really sad that he would ask him to promise to keep Bhelen from the throne.  Did he not know Harrowmount at all?  There's no way the guy could have prevented Bhelen from doing anything.  He should've been given a nice, peaceful position that wouldn't require any kind of power or assertiveness.  Like teaching young children about history.
