I've been gaming for years.  I worked as a gamemaster for one of the early text-based mprpgs in the 90's and more than half of my co-workers were female.  Many of them have moved on and have been working for games like WoW and EQII.  Most of my current gaming friends are female.  Yes, I still think we are a minority ... but a reasonably sized one.

I WISH my husband played games!  He indulges me in my game addictions, but he's not interested at all.

Heh, I think my husband finds it a mixed blessing that I've started playing PC games.  He has to give up his machine a lot, and put up with my mods and Fraps stuff.  But he also knows now he can lay down cash on a video card and I won't bat an eyelash.  LOL  Plus we can talk about it, whereas before I would mostly roll my eyes at his City of Heroes and whatnot.

I did start out in MUSH, in the 90s as well, and did encounter female players there more often than not.  Most of those women probably play video games, too.  I was reluctant because I have a short attention span unless something really hooks me, at which point I'm obsessive.  So my attempts to play other games have been mostly fail.  Still trying to get into The Witcher atm, trying hard but...

Anyway, I'm really glad you chicas play, too.  Posted Image  Really glad...

I'm a secret gamer and have been since the early 90s.  Started with Diablo, Baldur's Gate and Dungeon Keepers 1 and 2, then went to to No-One Lives Forever 2 the Spellforce games (a particular weakness), KOTOR (cried at the end), Vampire the Masquerade (my second favourite game) and finally this little treasure.

Addai you should really persist with the Witcher it is excellent, in the end I really "got" Geralt.  Perhaps you should read some of the books, they are quite extrordinary...

I do think I should probably read The Witcher books. Everyone says how good the story is, but I have not been able to take the game seriously yet.  Kill a monster, bed a wench doesn't do much for me.

I know exactly what you mean... If a game has my attention it's hard for me to stop playing and/or to find an other that could compare to this game.

I wouldn't call myself a real gamer, I consider myself as a roleplayer. I've been playing rpg since 15 years now and got introduced to pc games by my husband. The fist game was NWN, then nothing (except Sims - but I'm not sure if this counts ;) ) for a real long time until NWN2 and WoW. Now I'm lost to DA Posted Image

Secret gamer - I like it!  NONE of my friends play so I bet they wish I was a bit more secret about it, they just look at me like I'm crazy if I mention them.

Just started the Witcher myself, to try and console myself after the DAO let down :( it seems entertaining enough but Geralt's not very inspiring... yet.  Maybe I'll pick up the books too.. tbh I hadn't realised it was book inspired .

That's a goodlooking list, DahliaLynn! I remember playing a lot of those too. I've been playing games since I was a kid in the 80s. Started out on the NES, and was hooked from the very beginning. I always like the storytelling in video games more than the "roleplaying" in them. I don't even know if I ever felt like I was roleplaying in a game until Elder Scrolls: Morrowind. I did participate in chatroom-based AOL roleplaying in the late 90s, but that wasn't really a game. Are MUDs really games?

Heh, someone else said they'd never been a fangirl before.  For me that's not strictly true, I had my Hardy Boys posters and teenage crushes on the Rat Pack/ Young Guns crowd.  Kiefer Sutherland... I am loath to admit it.   But I got "serious" after that and am not a celebrity watcher by any means.  So it's the first time I knowingly admit to being a fangirl.  Posted Image

Heh, when the marital unit finally got me playing toon games with FO3 and Oblivion, I thought I'd have something to relate to with my male relatives who play games.  Not.  It's a whole 'nother world over there in Maddenland.

Wow, would have been really great to know another gamer growing up!!! I just looked up MUD since I obvbsiouly have little exp in that. I had little to do with roleplaying in my teens since I couldn't really connect with the imaginary sword yielding crowds that would gather after Star Wars conventions. It seems MUDS could be considered a "virtual" game of sorts, but more socially based. In the end, it's probably all about our immersion into an alternate world. I loved good storytelling, but enjoyed more of the challenging aspects of earlier games (the only ones that were available at the time.). IMO, the more they add story to challenging eye/hand coordination games, the better the game. Needless to say, romance is the absolute icing on the emotional cake.

That's an impressive list of games!  I'm so envious.  This is my first Windows game.  I've been a Mac-user ever since it first came out, so I haven't had many single-player games available to me.  I've played Civilication, Heroes of M&M (many versions), Sims 1, 2 & 3  and online - Gemstone III (on GEnie), LOTRO,  and WoW (for many years).

I finally bought one of the newer Macs that runs both Mac OS & Windows ... so here I am!

I wish I had been around for Baldur's Gate.  I might try KOTOR sometime.  or maybe Witcher.  I bought Mass Effect, but so far, it hasn't inspired me to play past the beginning.

Yes.  That's exactly my position.  My male friends think I'm weird, my female friends think I'm weirder and my husband knows I'm weird...

I did like Geralt, he's a bit like Sten, very dry, of the two swords he carries the silver: "that one is for monsters" and the steel: "that one is for monsters too" (he means human monsters...).

The annoying thing is I'm British and some of the best game designers and creators are British (pace Bioware...) and yet games in this country are still thought of as childish or violent... Oh well.  At least my nephews understand me...:o

I'm not sure if Gemstone III or Dragonrealms could really be considered MUDs.  They definitely were roleplaying games that were very heavy on story and character development, along with a lot of monster bashing.

Edited to stay on topic.

I realize when I wade through the DA2 forum that I have little grasp on what people understand by genre names.  The MU games I played were definitely story- and character-based.  You created a character and set up roleplay scenes, with players alternating writing a paragraph or two "pose" that advanced the scene.  No looting or killing unless by mutual agreement for story purposes.

My husband is more of an old school D&D player.  His dad was an engineer on a military base, so suburban lifestyle + lots of eggheads= game nerds galore.  His buddies from that era are all WoW and City of Heroes type gamers and we also like to play board games on occasion, usually with me as the only woman at the table.

Topical cuddle!

Lots of males I know are more into shooters and stuff that you don't really have to think much about, and less role playing.

I think most teen girls end up being fans of one Star or another. I had so many, Loved Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica, Buck rogers (erm lol??) Bj from Bj and the bear, and my most favorite was Han solo and his bro Indiana Jones. That lasted a while. But regarding video games...I never ever experienced or even thought in my wildest dreams that a Game character would touch me so. I guess that comes with advancement in graphics tech, and quality acting/ storytelling combined.
Alistair! perfect in all his imperfections. (if any!)

LOL  My nephews are gamers but more the action variety, so they still can't relate.  What are some of the British game designers?

One of the things I didn't know before I met my husband is how big Germany is in the gaming world, especially board games.  I lived in Germany- how did I not know this???  Anyway, if I despair of the Hollywoodization of North American game makers, I like to think the Europeans could still save us.

I have to admit that I have only a small amount of experience with MUDs.  I can't even remember the names of the couple that I tried, but they seemed to be more of the "create a character, kill things, make levels" type of games.  But I'm sure my knowledge of that genre is limited.  So yeah, I shouldn't have made the statement above.

I say that Dragonrealms was story driven, because we'd come up with these elaborate, long quests that players would take part in with very little to no combat, and players often earned exp just from roleplaying.  My main goal in that game was to tell stories that grabbed players emotionally.  I wish I could have accomplished a fraction of what Bioware has done in DA.  I think Gaider & Co. are Master Storytellers.  I don't think I've ever played a game before that got into my dreams as much as this one has.

Anyway, I've gotten off the subject of Alistair, and also the subject of female gamers!  And I seem to have run out of screenshots!

20 years of gaming and still counting :D All started with the old gameboy brick and Super Mario Land, then over to the still marvelous Super Nintendo and J-RPG's like Secret of Mana, Terranigma or Action Adventure like Zelda- a Link to the past. Next was an OMG Nintendo 64 xD...and so on. Since my computer is 5 yrs old crap, I game on the Xbox 360 which I have since three years now and a vast collection of 65 games of all sorts. Yah I'm that crazy, lol.

Though I must say that I have rarely played anything else since DA-release. Bioware-fangirl since Jade Empire btw, loved ME to the death for a long while ,until DA came and totally stole my heart, that is. (which BW has broken now btw, but hey >.>

That's about my gaming history so far. As for DA, my friend who never ever played a single game in her life loves to game it. Guess this says all.

I have been gaming since well I was 10 and my dad bought Age of Empires 1, in its shiny plastic wrap home.

Since then I really dont want to know how much gaming has taken from my life, especially Bioware games.
