But before I leave... Meri! Is that your own personal screenshot??? That's an awesome pic!

No..it's not. I haven't played the game longer than 10 minutes so far. My install is corrupted and I need to fix those issues first before I can remotely think on playing. Dahlia is such a sweetheart to help me via Skype with this. Hope we can work that out. Sigh.

Prompt Fill:  First Meeting

Fighting the wind and rain, he makes his way towards the light coming through the windows of what he hopes is an Inn. As he approaches, the sign banging against the eave of the roof tells him it is, thank the Maker. Gathering his cloak about him, he opens the door and steps inside.

The room is warm, with a blazing fire in the hearth at the back. A few guests are scattered around the six tables occupying the common area, in ones or twos, clearly other travelers caught by the raging storm. A few look up at his entrance, but quickly lose interest in yet another rain drenched soul seeking refuge from the rain. The aroma of food, lamb stew and fresh bread by the smell of it, waifs out from what must be the kitchen. He lowers the hood of his cloak, conscious of the puddle of water forming at his feet in this otherwise pristine room.

A crash rings out and all eyes turn towards the sound.

“Alistair?” a voice from his dreams calls out. “Is that really you?”

He stares at the dark haired elven beauty standing in the doorway between the kitchen and the common room, unable to believe his eyes. “Bera?”

She kneels to pick up the broken pitcher she’d dropped and without another thought, he joins her, gathering up the fragments of pottery.

“Thank you,” she says, standing up cautiously, her apron full of the broken pieces. She turns and walks back into the kitchen.

Alistair follows. His head spinning. His feet seeming to have a mind of their own.

“What are you doing here?” he blurts out, as unable to control his tongue as his feet.

Bera shrugs. “Earning a living.”

“But why here?”

“It’s… complicated,” she said, untying her apron after having disposed of the broken pitcher.

He couldn’t help but laugh. Despite all the pain of the past, she could still make him laugh. It was as if nothing had changed.

No, that wasn’t true. Everything had changed. He’d been a fool to not trust her. A fool to think she’d do something so drastic without a good reason. In his blind rage he’d walked out on her, on the best thing that had ever happened to him. He’d lost her, to Zevran of all people, if the rumors were true.

“When is it not, complicated?”

“True,” she said, smiling. The smile that could brighten a room. “Let me see to these guests and then we’ll talk, if you’d like.”

“I’d like that very much,” he said. “But, before you go, let me just say one thing. I’m sorry.”

The smile stayed on her face but he could see the pain in her eyes. She nodded, wordlessly, and headed back into the common room.

--

“You knew, didn’t you?” he asked. The last of the guests had retired leaving Bera and Alistair alone sitting near the warmth of the fire, enjoying a cup of hot tea as they chatted.

“I suspected. There had to be a reason Grey Wardens were necessary and I didn’t think it could be simply to find the Archdemon. It’s not as if it could hide once it surfaced, you know?”

“Why didn’t you say anything?” he asked, trying to hide the pain in his voice.

She sighed. “Because I didn’t want you to worry about it. You do that, you know. Worry. Incessantly. And then, when Loghain surrendered, I saw a chance for hope. If I was right, he’d bolster our numbers, giving you and I a better chance to survive. But there, during the Landsmeet, I couldn’t just blurt out what, if true, was obviously a deep Grey Warden secret.”

He reached out and placed his hand atop hers, tentatively, as if terrified she would pull away. “I’m sorry.”

She didn’t. Instead she squeezed his hand in return. “Stop. That’s the third time you’ve apologized. There’s no need. We both made mistakes. I should have shared my suspicions with you instead of relying on you to blindly follow my lead. We can’t undo the past.”

“You’re right. I’m so—“ he stopped himself, frantically searching for a different subject. “So, um… I’d heard rumors about you and –“

“Zevran,” she said, another sad smile crossing her face. “He was good to me, Alistair. He was there when I most needed him.”

Her words stung. Zevran had been there to give her what he couldn’t. But, something in the way she said it… “Was?” he asked, cringing at the hope he heard in his own voice.

“It’s comp—“

“Complicated,” he finished for her. “I have all night. Tell me.”

She hesitated. Finally, nodding, as if answering a question, she rose from the table. “Come with me.”

He followed her up the stairs, curious. She lead him down the hall to a door, opening it slowly, a finger pressed to her lips as the entered, admonishing him to be quiet.

From the light shining through the doorway, he saw a small sleeping form on the narrow bed under the window. A mass of dark hair poked up from underneath the covers. He stood motionless as Bera sat on the edge of the bed, cooing softly to boy. The child stirred, but did not awake. As she leaned down to give him a kiss, brushing his hair out of his face, Alistair noticed the boy’s rounded ears.

Another finger to lips as she ushered him out of the room, closing the door behind them. Silently, she led Alistair back down the stairs. Once again in the common room, he turned to face her.

“Is that –“

“Yes. He’s yours. Ours.”

He sank into a chair, his knees giving way. “How?”

Bera laughed. “Well if I have to tell you…”

“That’s not what I meant and you know it!” he said, blushing through his shock. Then his face turned serious. “Did you know this, too, back at the Landsmeet?”

She shook her head. “No, I didn’t realize I was pregnant until after the Archdemon was slain. I think it must have happened during our sojourn at the Gnawed Noble Tavern.”

He blushed again, remembering that night of passion. The first time they’d actually had a bed to play in.

“His name is Alilan,” she said. “After his father.”

“And this – he – is why you’re here and not in Fereldan?”

“Yes,” she said, sitting down beside him. “I was afraid of what Anora would do if she found out. So, I left as soon as I knew I was pregnant.”

He hesitated to ask this next question, but he had to know. “And Zevran?”

“He went back to Antiva. He did it for Ali, to protect him. He’d started hearing rumors about a group of Taliesin’s friends searching for him, to settle the score and he didn’t want to risk Ali’s life. So, he left. I haven’t seen him since Ali was a baby,” she said, her eyes glistening with unshed tears.

Alistair reached out and took her hand in his. Bera looked up at him with a questioning gaze.

“What about you?” she asked, sounding as hesitant as he had been moments earlier.

It was his turn to laugh. “I left Starkhaven, determined to turn over a new leaf.”

“New leaf?”

“It’s comp—“

“Mama?” Alilan asked, coming down the stairs.

“In here, Da’len,” she called, softly.

Alilan padded over to his mother, crawling into her lap. He stared at Alistair, unblinking, as only a child can stare. “Who’s he?” he asked, pointing at Alistair.

Bera looked at Alistair. He smiled slowly and nodded.

“This is your father, Alilan.”

Whipped this up pretty quick since things are a bit hectic here this morning.

~*~

Introduction

Alistair hurried through the halls of the royal palace. He hadn’t been here all that long, and the thought that this was going to be his home from now off still sat a little uncomfortably, but at least he wasn’t getting lost anymore. It helped that right now he knew exactly where he was going, and that his urgency and expression kept the dozens of people who wanted a piece of his time these days from attempting to stop him.

When Eamon had brought him the news, he’d forbidden the older man—and anyone else—to tell Lya. This was going to mean everything to her and he wanted to be the one to tell her. He’d been able to give her so little that he didn’t want to miss this opportunity.

Luckily, she wasn’t hard to find. She was in one of the large halls they’d been using, organizing the clean up of Denerim and meeting with those in charge of the crews responsible for disposing of the bodies. The two of them had done their fair of helping out, the only two who could touch darkspawn corpses without any fear. As it was, they both fretted over allowing others to destroy the corpses, but they couldn’t do it all on their own and the men seemed willing to take the risk.

Right now she was arranging to tear down several buildings that were beyond saving so the timbers could be used for pyres. He smiled when he saw her, he couldn’t help it. Even as frazzled as she looked, with mussed hair and a rumpled shirt, she was still beautiful.

“Excuse me, gentlemen,” he said. “I need to borrow your future queen. Carry on with what you are doing, I expect she’ll be occupied for the rest of the day.”

The men nodded and saluted as Alistair took Lya’s arm and drew her away.

“Alistair, what are you doing?” she asked. “I know we’ve been too tired and busy lately to spend much time together, but there are things we really need to get done.” The slight grin and teasing gleam in her eyes let him know she wasn’t being harsh.

“Oh, believe me, I know.” There really hadn’t been any time for just the two of them lately, and what time they did have together, was all too often spent deciding logistics or getting a few hours of much needed sleep.

“As much as I’d love to just drag you off for an afternoon somewhere where no one can bother us, this isn’t about me. This is for you. I have a surprise for you.”

Her brow furrowed in puzzlement as he led her toward the guest quarters. He’d made sure that there was no mistake, and Eamon had sworn that the man who appeared at the palace claiming to be who he said he was really was who he said he was.

He knocked perfunctorily on the door and then opened it, stepping to the side so that Lya could have an unimpeded view of the tall, dark-haired man waiting inside.

For a moment, she was absolutely still, not even breathing as her eyes and mouth went wide in shock. Then the man, whose own face bore the ravages of grief, smiled and held out his arms.

“Fergus!” Lya shrieked and then she was moving, running to throw herself into his arms, her own arms and legs wrapping around her brother as if she’d never let him go again.

She said nothing more, her sobbing being too much for her to speak through. She clung to her brother as he clung to her, his face buried in her shoulder, shaking with his own sobs.

Alistair, who remained in the hall, turned to a waiting servant. “Anything they need,” he said, “get it. And see that they’re not disturbed.”

“Yes, ser,” she said, curtseying. Alistair closed the door gently, leaving the siblings to share their mixed joy and grief in private. Running a hand over his suspiciously damp eyes, he walked back to the meeting room and the tasks that awaited him there.

Lya found him a few hours later, her eyes still red-rimmed, but her expression ecstatic. She threw herself at him and he caught her easily. “Thank you,” she whispered.

“I didn’t do anything,” said Alistair. “He found his way here on his own after he heard about you.”

“I know, he told me. But I’m glad you’re the one who told me. Maker, Alistair, my brother is alive. He’s alive!” She laughed happily. “We’re not alone anymore!”

Dashing at the new tears running down her cheeks, she tugged on his arm. “Come on. He wants to meet you. I want you to meet him! He says you didn’t before, that you went and got me as soon as you found out.”

She pulled him down the hall, practically running and he had to jog to keep up with her. Once back at the room, she pushed him inside. “Fergus, this is Alistair. Alistair, this is Fergus.”

For a moment, the two men just looked at each other. This close, Alistair could see the resemblance between Lya and her brother. Both had the same jaw lines and chin, the same foreheads. Their eyes were different, Fergus’s a bright blue next to Lya’s green, and his hair had a touch of red in it compared to her sable color, but there was no denying that these two were blood.

There was a hard look in Fergus’s eyes as the man blatantly and unashamedly appraised him. Alistair found himself straightening under that gaze, wanting to meet whatever expectations Fergus had of him. There were very few people whose opinion he cared about—Lya’s only remaining family was one of them.

“I’ve heard a lot about you these last few weeks,” Fergus finally said.

“Good things, I hope,” Alistair joked and then mentally kicked himself. Not the impression he should be giving the first time he met the brother of the woman he was marrying.

But Fergus grinned and held out a hand. Alistair clasped it, feeling a profound sense of relief that he’d passed whatever test Fergus was judging him on. He expected Fergus to let go of his hand once they’d shook, but instead Lya’s brother pulled him into a rough hug.

“Thank you for keeping her safe,” Fergus said quietly.

“I didn’t. Uh, I mean…” Alistair stammered, slightly embarrassed. “I had help, and I’d say she protected me equally as much.”

“She’d argue that with you. But if that’s the case, then thank you for making her happy.”

Fergus held out an arm and Lya joined them, burrowing in between them so that she was hugging both of them. The two men grinned at each other over her head.

“Welcome to the family, brother,” murmured Fergus.

Re:Prompt fills

That's a lovely reunion between Fergus and Lya, Lady D.

What an unexpected reunion overseas, Tigress! And now they're just two people with nothing hanging over them--except the taint.

Funny pic, Inclemency! Poor frog Alistair--not even a handsome frog!

Thanks. Game is running smoothly now, though but the DLC aren't. it says it is downloaded in the list, but that my DLC is unauthorized. I have redeemed the code online already. Now I have to search the forum for a workaround.

Seriously I'm already fed up of it...even before starting playing. *grumbles*

I hit that issue as well, the best thing to do is to reinstall it.

It worked for me.
