Week Five Prompt: First Meeting
-------------------------------------------------
Alistair paced around the garden of the palace praying silently to the Maker to help him get through this meeting.
He was going to meet Elissa Cousland today to see if she could be a possible match for marriage.
The late Rendon Howe had overtaken Castle Highever and massacred her family but she survived and endured months of torture before managing to escape her cell. An elven family who worked for her family and had survived Howe’s coup took her in. For months afterwards, she lived in the woods not far from Highever. Raelnor, leader of the of the Blackstone Irregulars found her and along with the help of a dozen of his men as well a dozen citizens from Highever, helped her reclaim Castle Highever. Alistair had learned that Rendon Howe left his youngest son in charge at Highever and that Elissa killed him.
Elissa’s brother had also survived Ostagar. After Kallian’s death, he had locked himself in his chambers to grieve and avoid the celebrations. Leliana and Wynne met Fergus by accident and when he identified himself they immediately brought him to Eamon.
Elissa had come to Denerim and fought in the battle and made her way to the castle to make sure Highever was back in Cousland hands.
Eamon was talking to Fergus, Leliana, and Wynne when the guards brought her to the main hall and Leliana said Elissa cried out when seeing Fergus.
Leliana and Wynne said seeing Fergus reunite with his sister brought both of them to tears. Fergus collapsed to his knees when Elissa told him of their family’s massacre and what she endured. Leliana had said that they clung to each other as if afraid to let go.
Eamon had told Fergus that Highever would be returned to them and she went back with Fergus to help him rebuild. It had been nearly two years now and while Alistair had met Fergus several times, he had not met Elissa. The only things he knew about her was that she was supposedly pretty, very smart and that she was huge supporter of elven rights. She was dedicated to rebuilding the Highever Alienage back to its original high standards her father created for it.
Shianni had met Elissa once and liked her. As bann of the Alienage in Denerim, Shianni traveled to Highever. The Alienage in Highever was renowned for being one of the best and she wanted to see it for herself. Alistair knew if Shianni liked her that there had to be something special about her.
And today he was going to meet Elissa for the first time. After enduring noblewomen being shoved at him, Alistair had to admit it was refreshing to meet someone who asked nothing of him.
Alistair watched as Wynne walked down the path with a pretty young woman with curly auburn hair.
Oh Maker! If that was Elissa than she is pretty.
Alistair suddenly felt like he was betraying Kallian for even thinking Elissa was pretty.
“Your Majesty, may I present Lady Elissa Cousland.” Wynne smiled.
“Your Majesty.” Elissa curtsied and bowed then looked up at him. “Hello your majesty. It’s a pleasure and honor to finally meet you.”
Elissa was not just pretty, she was beautiful and he hated himself for even thinking it.
She had the most beautiful emerald green eyes he had ever seen.
“Please. Call me Alistair.”
“Alright. Alistair.”
“I’ll leave you two alone.” Wynne smiled and walked back to castle entrance before Alistair could grab her.
They sat on the bench and just looked at each other for the longest times before Elissa broke the silence.
“Is this as awkward for you as it is for me?”
“Yes.” Alistair laughed nervously
“Fergus told me you would be nervous.”
“I’m afraid the only things I heard about you was that you were dedicated to elven rights and that you were pretty.”
“I hope you don’t mind but Shianni told me about Kallian. I just want to say I am so sorry for your loss. I do…understand how it feels.”
“Yes I guess you would understand. And no, I don’t mind and thank you.” Alistair managed a wistful smile.
This meeting was going better than he thought. Elissa was one of a few people who did not judge him for loving an elven woman.
“Along with my family, I lost somebody special to me.”
“Tell me about him.”
“His name was Dairren. He was killed the night Howe’s men overtook the castle.”
“I’m sorry for your loss.”
And Alistair listened when Elissa told him about Dairren and he shared a few things about Kallian. Their meeting turned into a lunch where they both even managed to joke around and laugh a few times.
He actually liked her and the guilt he was feeling was slowly dissipating when he realized that one of the reasons he liked her was that she was not Kallian.
After lunch, he arranged for them to have supper in a few days. Elissa was most unpretentious noblewoman he had ever come across and actually enjoyed her company.
“It was a pleasure to meet you Elissa.” Alistair gently took her and kissed it. “I shall look forward to our supper together.”
“Thank you Alistair, I’m looking forward to it to.” Elissa smiled and blushed slightly as she headed to the door.
“You know Alistair, Shianni said you were kind of a goofball but I didn’t see that all.”
“Give it time Lady Elissa.” Alistair laughed. “You will.”
“Something else to look forward to then.” Madeline gave him a wink and roguish grin before going out the door to the carriage that was waiting for her.
Did she just flirt with him?
Alistair smiled as rode back to the palace trying to remember the last time he felt this happy.
