The Alistair Gush Thread: *Squee*

And so I present "Splitting Hairs".
Snip. Snip.
“Hey! Be careful there!” Alistair protested, causing Lana to pause and look at him curiously, scissors poised half open. Exasperation was clear both in sapphire eyes and in the young woman’s stance where she stood behind the warrior seated on a small boulder. There wasn’t even any hair on his bare shoulders where he sat clad only in his pants and boots.
“Alistair, all I did was just take a few snips.”
“Ye-es, and you still need to be careful.” He kept his face straight and his voice as serious as possible, but his warm brown eyes told a different story as they danced with amusement. And he was very careful to make sure she couldn’t see his face.
She stared hard at the back of his head, “You were the one complaining about your hair getting shaggy. So if you don’t want me to do this, why take me up on the offer to trim it?”
“It is getting shaggy. And the last time I tried to do it myself, weeelll, let’s just say it wasn’t pretty.”
Lana crossed her arms, being mindful of the scissors, “You’re having me on, aren’t you?”
“Would I do that?”
She let silence speak for her.
He turned around and gave her his most charming smile, “Besides, you’re the only one I trust to have something sharp around my head.”
Lana made an exasperated sound, “Wynne and Leliana aren’t that bad. Leliana is probably the better choice with hair than I am anyway since she’s had some practice.”
It was Alistair’s turn to make a disgusted sound, “Yes, the hair of pampered Orlesian noblewomen. Elderly ones too.”
“Oh, it wasn’t just elderly ones from what I understand”, came the dry response.
“So? They’re still female and I’m most assuredly not.”
She grinned at his indignant tone, “No, you’re definitely very…male.” And felt her cheeks start to flush slightly despite herself. Oddly enough, while Alistair may have been the sheltered Chantry boy, he’d adapted to the intimate turn their relationship had taken far better than she had. Seeing his smirk, she hastily asked, “Why not ask Zevr? I’m sure he’d probably be more helpful.”
He growled, “I’m not having Zev around me without my full armor.”
“Alistair…” She sighed, “Look, I know you don’t entirely trust him, but really, full armor?”
“Oh, I’m not worried him stabbing me. It’s well…” It was his turn to turn red as he made a complicated twisting gesture with his hands from embarrassment. “He said since I was so nervous about being around Isabela, that he offered to, erm… Be there. If I needed any advice.”
She stared at him for a moment, and shook her head with amusement, though the pink in her cheeks deepened a bit, “Zev knows better. He was just teasing you.”
“Uh huh, somehow I don’t think you threatening to kill him would impress him.”
Lana dimpled as an evil grin blossomed and her eyes twinkled with mischief, “Oh no, something much worse.”
“You aren’t really the type to torture people, my love. And somehow I think Zev would enjoy it if you did.”
“Well, trust me it’s not the type he would enjoy. I threatened him that I’d bribe Leliana into taking him with her the next time she went shoe shopping.”
Alistair looked at her blankly.
“Trust me, you haven’t gone shopping with her. Until you do, you won’t understand the experience.”
“I’ll take your word for it”, he said faintly.
She grinned as she brandished the scissors, “Since you so neatly sidetracked us. Did you want me to finish this up? Or do you want to let it grow out? Personally, I think you might look cute with slightly longer hair.”
“Cute”, he growled and turned around. “I’d say do your worst, but I’d hate to see how bad that would be. So do your best, m’dear.”
Still grinning she resumed her careful snipping, and very casually said, “And there’s been a request from Wynne and Morrigan.”
“…I’m not so sure I want to hear this. But go on.”
“They’re asking that you stop raiding our elfroot supplies.”
He was quiet and very carefully did not squirm.
“Do I want to know?”
Alistair grumbled a bit, “Okay, fine. I use an elfroot wash with my hair sometimes. I don’t use that much.”
“Uh huh.”
“I don’t suppose you have anything better in mind?”
“Actually, I might.”
“You know, that was rhetorical, right?”
Her lips turned up into another grin, this one slightly wicked, “I know, but I do have an alternative. You just need to make sure you don’t get any in your eyes or mouth, and don’t have any open cuts in your hands.”
Alistair’s silence was telling before he said, “Before I agree, you’re going to tell me what’s in it.”
“It’s not that bad.”
“Riiiight.”
“It’s a mixture of lifestone and deathroot. More lifestone than deathroot. With equal parts water to dilute it.”
“And you use that on your hair?” His horrified reaction was more amusing than offensive to her.
“Yes, and since I’ve used it at least once since we’ve gotten involved, you aren’t in any danger of getting poisoned as long as your careful. And, you’re all done”, she said as she put the scissors to the side and began to brush off the light coating of snipped hair off his shoulders.
He twisted around to pull her down into his lap and purred, “Then let me make it up to you.”
She batted her eyes at him, “And what did you have in mind?”
While Alistair’s response wasn’t verbal, he more than answered that question.

Sarah - I liked how Aunn tried to get Alistair to think over his hate about Loghain.
Unfortunately, Marlana is just as irrational about Howe, so she'd never have that kind of conversation with Alistair.

@Cat: Have you accidentally activated Zevran's romance? Alistair only denies to kiss you, when that is the case and Zevran in the party. He is understandably pissed about you smoothing Alistair then.
Meri, I may have. I've never kissed him or done anything else (it's all Ali for me), but I may have accidentally done something. I still see the "come to my tent" option when I talk to him, but I've never used it. I think, though, that it's just disappointment that he can't watch, as I get a Zev disapproves -3 everytime Ali won't kiss. So I've taken to sending him home when I need a smooch. Sten's reaction was the best: "Disgusting", and Alistair's response so funny I laughed for 10 minutes.
Just heard from a friend that Munich airport is having trouble. She's stuck waiting for a flight to Geneva and might not get out. Your turn.
@Inclemency - you have the best fraps finger! Awesome shot!!
@reika - funny funny read. Alistair is priceless!

And yeah, it's sometimes easy to trigger one of the romances without meaning to. Some of the more innocuous lines have more meaning than you expect. I learned that with Leliana.
Of course, with Leli, I had one playthrough where she basically stopped talking to me. No approval loss, and never got any approval gain. May have just been glitched.

“You killed Conner!” Alistair screamed, his face full of rage. “How could you?”
Randi’s back bristled as she stood her ground, staring up at the tall Templar. “No. I killed a Demon, remember?”
“Who was inside a boy! The son of Arl Eamon for Andraste’s sake!”
“Yes, a boy who was an apostate, and a summoner of demons!” she replied, getting angrier by the minute.
“But… Oh never mind, you’re just splitting hairs here. The fact of the matter is we could have found another way, but you didn’t even try!” he retorted, rubbing his hands over his face in tired exasperation.
Silence greeted him. He removed his hands from his eyes to see Randi staring at him, perplexed.
“What does hair care have to do with this?” she asked, in complete seriousness.
“Huh?” he asked in return, totally lost, a feeling not new to him since meeting Randi.
“You said we were ‘splitting hairs’, as if we were parting our hair, or in the case of a man, their beards, in preparation for braiding,” confusion still evident on her face. “What’s that got to do with killing demons?”
“Andraste’s knickers! It’s an idiom. An expression… it wasn’t literal!” he replied, exasperated.
“An idiom? A human thing then, yes?” she asked, her brow furrowed as she tried to understand. “What does it mean?”
“It means we’re arguing about small points that don’t relate to the subject at hand. You know, like you say ‘toh-mah-toh’, I say ‘toh-may-toh’, that kind of thing.”
“What’s a ‘toh-mah-toh’?”
“It’s ‘toh-may-toh’, and it’s a fruit, though many people call it a vegetable.”
“You just told me I should say it was ‘toh-mah-toh’, so stop correcting me! I’m doing just what you told me to do,” she said, glaring at him. “And why do humans call it a vegetable if it’s a fruit?”
Alistair sighed. “Because they eat it like a vegetable, on sandwiches and stuff.”
“Why do they eat a fruit like a vegetable?” she asked, confused. “You humans are so strange!”
“I have no idea! I didn’t come up with the usage for ‘toh-may-tohs’.”
“Who did?” she asked, curious once again.
Alistair threw up his hands. “Look! I don’t know and I don’t care. Let’s just drop it, okay? Go! Leave me alone! You’re making my head hurt!”
“Okay,” she said before turning to leave.
As she walked back to her tent she couldn’t help but smile. Count on men, regardless of race, to fall for the old misdirection trick to get them sidetracked from their train of thought. At least she didn’t have to worry about having him yell at her for killing that stupid boy anymore.

@Dahlia - That's very good news about Alistair's wedding robes!
Yay, prompt fills! I love that this one has inspired so much great dialogue.
@Sarah - Very, very interesting using Loghain and justice vs vengeance as the theme of splitting hairs. And Alistair saying, “Why ever would it come down to killing Loghain or ending the Blight?” was eerie.
@Reika - That was fun! I loved the hair concoctions!
@Storm - Great Alistair - Ogre picture!
@ Tigress - LOL!

We found flights through Rome. She'll arrive Wednesday night (I hope). My friend was delayed a couple of hours in Munich, but she made it to Geneva without too many problems. Thanks for asking. We tried to send her via Germany, but we couldn't get her on a flight to Cyprus. Sorry about the not- white Christmas.
First anything with Alistair. *sigh*

Alistair having a Di moment. He's at -29 here, and I swear in this shot I think his left eye has a twitch from trying to comprehend his fellow warden.

@Reika: Alistair should take comfort in his hair being too short for Leliana to do much with. I'd be a little scared at the thought of shoe shopping with Leliana as well. How does Zevran know the horror? Has he been or did Marlana describe it in great detail to him?
@Tigress: Oh, I absolutely love that! The only thing that made them getting hopelessly and hilariously sidetracked better was the fact that she was totally doing it on purpose.
@Everybody who commented: Thanks and I'm glad you guys liked it. I'm not sure why so many of my prompts seem to include Loghain since I'm sure not even Alistair thinks about him that much. One of these days, I'll get a different idea I'm sure and then the more anti-Loghain people will stop having to tactfully ignore it.
