and general toolset performance i suppose.
i'm getting a new computer. what's important for calculating light map speed?

RAM, RAM and more RAM and multiple cores. and make sure you got plenty of cache memory on the CPU.

so you'd say that going for a quad core would be useful in this case (i'm going for something in the 1400$ class).

that's the one i'm currently thinking of getting. it's got 8 gigs of ram and a dual core i5 processor.

well in my opinion the intel i5 processor and similar processor in that family to be way to expensive for the extra power you get. a cheaper quad core will save you money. there is no point in trying to get the ultimate machine, it's a waste of money. hardware get better and faster to quick, anyone with normal economy should go for the balance between cost and power. and upgrade every third year or so instead of having a machine that holds for five years and is only special in 6 months.

the toolset is a 32bit app so more than 4gig will do nothing
also i would go for a gtx 460. it's cheaper, similar performance and has got the benefit of nvidia's cuda, if you are using other apps which support that feature (3d modeling apps and so on).

Get a i5-750. i5-650 is just 2 cores with hyperthreading.
If you are building your own computer, you can get the parts for less than $800-$900 if you search for deals/coupons. I'll second Semper's suggestion of going with nVidia (CUDA + PhysX integration)

would getting a quad core instead of dual core speed up lightmapping significantly or is it negligable?

AMD Phenom II X6 1035T-processor - 8 cores
there's this processor. is it a good processor?

dunno if the toolset is optimized with hyperthreading - if so then that's for sure a no go for amd.
the same to the question about 2 or 4 cores. to get values someone has to run a render process at the same level with different cores. or browse the yafray forums^^
just buy i5-750 and a gtx 460, 4gig ram and you are ready for years. it's cheap, it's powerful and will blow everything away
