Au contraire, renegade can be fun. The only 'canon' are the choices your character makes on a given play-through.

Ines Shepard. Colonist, ruthless Soldier.
Gets the job done. Was emotionally scarred by losing her parents at a young age to a Batarian slaver attack on Mindoir (and consequently hates Batarians) therefore led a 'no matter the cost' assault on Torfan against the Batarians. (This combination makes perfect sense to me)
I'm still playing this one through in ME1, so can't give a full report; however, I can make some ready predictions based on her decisions so far.

ME1:
*Recruited all squadmates as it's the expedient thing to do. Strength in numbers, plus it doesn't hurt to have a little bit of non-human cannon-fodder.
*Killed fist. Wanted her article in 'bad-ass weekly' so gave the OSD to Emily Wong.
*Anoleis and Gianna Parasini shot one another, essentially removing all potential obstacles to her mission on Noveria.
*Set off the neutron purge first and foremost as it was the most immediate threat, then killed the security detail when they attacked her.
*Rachni Queen fried. They proved their intentions a long time ago, so not going to give them a chance to do it all over again.
*Taught Garrus to bring the bad guy down no matter the cost.
*Shiala survived on Feros, the colonists did not. "I'm not going to stop and ask them to breathe deeply." The reason for being there was to stop Saren, not tippy-toe around the colonists.
*Gave Tali the Geth data from the perspective of potentially gaining an ally in the Quarians.
*Romancing Kaidan.
*Slaughtered all the Batarians on X57. All Batarians are twisted and cannot let a terrorist like that go regardless, the loss of a few engineers is acceptable.
*Slaughtered Darius and all his men. There can be no negotiation with terrorists.
*Gave Wrex his family armour after coming across it by chance.
*Killed the crime bosses and Helena Blake.
*Is not so narrow-minded as to support Terra Firma. Takes a bigger picture stance, does not support the political agenda of a particular group. Does what she thinks is the right thing to do.
*Have not been to Virmire yet, however, Kaidan will survive as the nuclear device potentially being disarmed is not an option. Kirrahe will be used to divert most of Saren's forces away from them so the mission can be completed with the best odds for success. The mission must succeed at all costs. Ashley is a necessary sacrifice - she will consider it a heroic sacrifice and would admire Ashley's attitude. *Wrex is seen as a potentially powerful ally. He will survive Virmire.
*The council will die as they have been nothing but an impediment, plus the destruction of Sovereign is the most important objective.
*Anderson will be made councillor as Udina clearly has his own agenda, whereas Anderson is military and military concerns will be vital in the coming days.

I do have a canon playthrough. My other playthroughs aren't just experiments per-se. I do have more of an investment / emotional connection to my first / canon playthrough though. It goes like this:



Paragon, Male, Standard Appearance, Soldier, Earth born, War Hero



In Me1 I was the boyscout. If there was a "nice" thing to do I pretty much did it. Rachni lived, Wrex lived, Ferros was spared, Shiala is alive, Saved my LI Ash on Vermire [but only because she was guarding the bomb ... afterall that's what had to be saved], I made the interviewer look foolish, Saved the council, Anderson is on the council now.



I was nice to Conrad ; let most other folks live [except for Fist because I took Wrex with me] ... oops





In ME2:

I recruited all squadmates.

I got the loyalty of everyone.

Everyone survived the suicide mission.

Got reinstated as a Spectre.

I kept the genophage cure just in case.

I pargoned my way through the interview

I reprogrammed the Heretics.

I helped Liara kill the Observer.

I had a romance with Tali [Unfaithful to Ash -- yes unfaithful with a bug eyed alien ... heh]

I told the Quarians not to go to war / I withheld evidence of Rael'Zorah's "crimes"

I destroyed the Collector base.



And then I did most of the minor Paragon decisions again.



IIRC I did give Mordin a lot of heck about the genophage. I did do a fair amount of renegade interrupts [burned the Krogan, Snapped the Eclipse Merc's neck, Pushed the Eclipse Merc out the window, etc.] I did tons of paragon interrupts too ... Tali hug & such.

Major Storyline Decisions-Generally the way I play my Shepard is him being "Lawful Good" in the first game and "Chaotic Good" in the second. My decision to let the council die was the turning point in me realizing that in a life and death situation I have to screw the rules to get the job done. So yeah, Paragon in the first, Paragade in the second.

:got jiggy with the consort (who wouldnt jump at the chance to do it with an asari lol)
