It's less a drawn out story narrative (like the tale of Leliana's betrayal and escape), and more of a dark-fantasy pseudo-horror experience. Think of it as an expanded Alienage Orphanage quest, when you were going through the haunted building with all the dead spirits popping out here and there.

this is a good comparison
i could not think of anything to compare it to but this will do nicely:)

Such a quandary to love story-focused play and yet to find Leliana the most. annoying. NPC. ever.  Posted Image  Makes the DLC landscape look so bleak.  Here's hoping there is another companion DLC, and Maker let it not be a Wynne flashback to seducing young men in the Tower.

sorry peoples but that's my opinion of it

That's what it sounds like to me, too, that's why I really don't know if I want to buy it. I'd rather that their sales numbers are smaller for DLC without plot and actors.

I honestly had a bit more fun with DSC, if only for the chance to kill Wynne and Howe with an Ogre!

@errant_knight:

I second your thought. Too bad that I'm a sucker for this things and always end up buying them but it'd be a good thing if the sales numbers for this kind of DLC are lower than the story based ones.

Oh. Dang.
I mean, I'm happy for all the folks who romanced Morrigan, but I really wanted a main campaign mod. I don't get why they started out with two good oned like that, cheaped out on a third in a similar style, and simply refuse to go there again.

Well...if there's a Morrigan one on the way, at least they'll be an Alistair one coming along. I'll find that much easier to play. Morrigan isn't going to make choices I'm going to be comfortable making....

See, this is what they count on, and why they can keep making stuff that requires little effort and maximum profit.

It's going to be after Awakening, when she's still pregnant. The (male) Warden comes across her (was looking for her if The Warden), and the entire DLC turns out to be one fetch quest after another.

'Oh, do be a dear and slaughter that monster over there so I can have some pickled bear loins.'
'Love, I simply have the greatest craving for elfroot spread over the liver of an eagle.'
'Bastard who made me so weak and helpless and pregnant, get me the ear of a dragon before I devour yours instead.'

Morrigan is one cranky pregnant lady.

Same basic post but slightly edited I had in the non spoilers forum… So its likely going to ****** off some BioWare diehard loyalists or those who just cant accept that there are a few of us who expect better from BioWare.

Ok I gave in a bought it. A bad mistake since its not worth it unless you want some mindless hack ‘n slash fun. Even the puzzles are not really much to figure out and it gives you the answer for one of them.

First off, I’m getting sick of these reused locations. Why is it that Mass Effect 2 can get new locations like with Overlord (for a recent example) but yet with all the Dragon Age downloads we get recycled crap?

The Bad (so much of it):
-Deep Roads Grotto where this one starts is just Ortan Thaig with some slight cosmetic changes like where Ruck’s cave should be. Very weak use of “the smoke/fog” to try and conceal things.

-Amgarak is nothing more than a reused Kal’Hirol (from Awakenings) again with some slight cosmetic changes. The room with the first big black ball is with the blue crystals is where you found that human in the cage.

-Having this start off in the Deep Roads Grotto instead of oh I don’t know, in Orzamarr so we could work our way through the Deep Roads to get here was rather shallow. This alone would have added length to gameplay, some more dialog with Jerrik and of course some added combat with Darkspawn and other usual critters to get used to the bronto and Jerrik’s tactics. “Do I need to worry about this now while I have the chance or later when I’m waist deep in the crap?”

-Reskined enemies, you’ll spot the revenant clones fast enough with the same attacks even. The only new one you encounter is the “boss” one.

-Something that was mentioned in the other forum was the color puzzles and how it is a royal pain for those who are color blind.

-Having a high difficulty really means a lot of cheap shots when it come to fighting Golem groups which you run into a lot. Getting knocked down before I can get a spell off and see my group get killed before I can do anything is weak, very weak. I can only imagine how much of a royal pain this is when your not playing an mage with healing.

-Not much of a story at all really even with the interesting ending and potential future things that can be done here. It is beatable under 2 hours. I got more story and even dialog out of Darkspawn Chronicles than this.

-No conversations at all beyond the initial 2 or so. Can you even talk to the brother? Never tried since I got sick of hearing the stale dialog from Jerrik. Seriously is it a drarven thing or is it just me that the voice actor sounds like someone who is just bored to tears to say anything with beyond the monotone like setting he does say things in?

-Great way to start the mission as well with no traveling or a quick stopover to a store to get rid of anything in your inventory you might want to get rid of to make room for new stuff. You just start off right at the entrance to the first location. So be prepared and have at least half your backpack empty.

-Way to many large things on the screen in clustered rooms. Having the bronto and golem fight 4 other golems along with you and 2 dwarves in a small room got real annoying when you cant see anything.

The Good (not surprising it’s a short list again):
-This thing will be a royal pain in the rear on Nightmare for sure if your using a non healer since this doesn’t provide you one in your group. So be sure to make sure you have a lot of healing potions in your import Warden.

-The boss and sub boss critters seem pretty interesting with potential for reappearing in DA2.

-The rewards (so far the I have only the sash thing I found in my inventory) you get for finishing this is finally something for a mage to use. Something a starting mage should be able to use I might add. From what I understand one item is practically a gold giveaway (the Reapers Cudgel ) and the other one (The High Regard of House Dace) sounds pretty good.

I’m sorry, but is this really the best we can expect out of BioWare for downloadable content? Personally I’m getting a bit annoyed with the near vapor ware content made just to make a quick buck out of the gaming community. Take a lesson from other developers that actually know how to do the download thing with content examples from Bethesda and Oblivion and Fallout 3, or the makers of Borderlands (Gearbox/2K Games). These 2 hour or less mission/quests are getting really old really fast. What about adding something that adds to the main game itself especially for Awakenings, something that takes longer than 2 hours to do and has some sort of impact in the game.

So go ahead and reply with:
“what do you expect for $5”
“don’t like it don’t buy it their downloads”
“cry me a river”
“you’re an elitist with your comments and viewpoints”
or whatever else the typical troll like replies I usually get for posting something that rubs their feathers the wrong way.

Oh in regards to the Morrigan possible download, you know it will be just like Leliana’s Song.
-It will have reused locations. Maybe we’ll go to Redcliffe next time?
-Probably a storyline that doesn’t match what happened in DAO if it takes place after it.
-If it take place after it, it wont mach your end game results for the dark ritual since she will be pregnant no matter what happens.
-Short again with playtime under 2 hours and you’ll play it a few times, get bored and move on.
-Morrigan fans will love it no matter how it is, just like the Leliana ones love Leliana’s Song almost unquestionably.

Personally I would rather have downloads like Wardens Peak or Return to Ostagar. Things like them that I can play with each new play through of the game and with my Warden and group because they are in the game. These stand alone diversions are getting old.

i crapped my pantaloons when i saw that room full of golems. and rightfully so. my sniper/rogue was the only one to make it out alive and i had to systematically take down each golem, on-by-one, drawing them out into the open area down the stairs.

Stealth saved my ass on more than one occasion, without a dedicated healer it was difficult, but not impossible. But overall i liked it -- worth $5.

I was sad to see my experience bar stop climbing :( level 35 max!?!? what kinda crap is that?!

I guess it does add to the dwarven story a bit, though the premise seems a little... weird. And illogical.

Wait are you telling me the flesh Golem made of casteless Dwarves with a demon stuck in it wasn't a good idea? That it was just as likely to go Berserk and kill everything as it was to follow orders and win the entire goddamn war by itself. Because if you are . . .

Heh.  The lyrium made them do it.

Actually, I participated in the illogical OOC'ness simply by importing a Warden who had no business being there.  I'm going to put it down to elf mage chancellor having a nightmare after reading a bad graphic novel she found on Alistair's nightstand.

I don't think it's as bad as that. You get a codex entry letter from Varel addressed to the Warden-Commander telling you that your presence has been requested dealing with this (I don't remember how in-detail it gets but presumably you you about the attempt to rebuild golems before you show up) and you agree to take a look. Finding a way to bring back golems? Kind of important particularly given either what happened with Branka or the fact that you didn't know it was possible and golems are really, really useful.

Yeah, the story leaves something to be desired but if you're the Warden-Commander then you're presence in the DLC doesn't.

My PC is chancellor of Ferelden and doesn't lack for things to do.  Something that doesn't directly affect the future of the country is probably not something she would risk her life over.  It's more plausible if you're a dwarf or a full-time Warden.

Golems of Amgarrak was...ok.  Nowhere near as good as Leliana's Song, but not as bad as Darkspawn Chronicles.

Good:
- Enjoyed the attempts at creepy atmosphere.
- Higher combat difficulty is always welcome (I play exclusively on nightmare).
- Continuing my Warden's adventures is always welcome.
- Multi-phase boss fight that's a bit of a puzzle.  I get the feeling Bioware is testing their encounter design for their Star Wars MMO.

Bad:
- Obviously reused areas.  This just looks cheap and amateurish.  Blocking off the entrance to Ruck's cave with a pile of boulders and calling it a new area doesn't exactly scream "professional" to me.
- Insane power creep with new items.  The stuff you get for the 3 achievements (amulet, belt, mace) are 5000% better than the stuff you find in Origins.  I enjoyed DA a lot more when most of your power comes from your character, not your gear.
- Story was not too great.  If they could expand on this in the future that would be nice, but as a standalone adventure this was mostly hack-and-slash.
- While using your Warden again was nice, I'm getting sick of these temporary companions.  They're just meatshields here and I don't care about them at all.  The major draw of Bioware's games has always been your companions and your interactions with them.  I could understand a lot of your old party moving on (Sten, Morrigan, Wynne, etc.), but where's Leliana?  Where's Zevran?  Perhaps a mix of old and new characters may be good.  But if introducing new characters, they should stick around for more than a single dungeon.
- Same import issues as Awakening (no WK gear, helmet bug still present).  They probably lifted the crappy import script straight from Awakening.

Somewhere in the middle:
- The fights with the rooms full of golems can vary wildly in difficulty depending on your character.  It was a cakewalk if your main character is a SnS tank, but I've heard a lot of complains from players who use squishier types.  I don't know if this is a good or bad thing.

I also notice the challenge scaling seems to be way off, or perhaps I'm missing something.  The first time I played it, it was with a Lvl 24 character imported from Origins (not Awakening).  Most of the dungeon was challenging but not too hard, until the Harvester fight.  On nightmare, my SnS warrior got torn apart by the dual-wielding skeletons...they did way too much damage way too fast, and my character's defense was just not high enough.  The 2nd time I played it, I imported the same character, now at Lvl 34 imported from Awakening.  The gear was largely the same, except now we have all these customized runes.  Now my character's dodge% and defense are a lot higher, and the Harvester fight at nightmare turned into a cakewalk.

I just finished it on Hard with my Mage Warden and I have to say I really liked it, very nice DLC!

The battles were challenging, just as specified. The atmosphere was creepy and the story had me hooked from the beginning (i.e. "What the hell happened there?!").
Some small things were very nice, like the letter from Varel in the Codex, the deep stalkers running away and such.

Perhaps the only minor point would be the re-use of the Kal'Hirol area.

I can see some originality in the difficulty but aside that so far meh.

I only play on Nightmare difficulty since almost all fights are way too easy but the end boss of this DLC offered some kind of challenge especially for my mage. Thus it was worth the 5 bucks i spent. Having said that they prob made this dlc in a week or so. There were nothing new mob wise and it was filled with copy paste levels. Also the blue/purple haze on my screen only annoyed me rather than get me all excited. Despite all that as i said at the start the final challenge was worth it

EDIT: Warrior on nightmare wasnt as good. i guess bioware was influenced by the moaning of many after the original campaign where warriors were lacklustre to put it lightly thus they buffed the warriors way too much. Post awakening you can just beast through anything as a warrior and you dont even need a shield to tank anything. I think this made DAO the first game in which as the game progresses the mages decline and warriors rise

well if you were playing with your warrior in your avatar you would have been able to massacre/onslaught couple down before they start to hurl the entire place at you. but yes i do agree other than difficulty there was nothing interesting

Are you telling me that the Warden "mysteriously vanished" so he/she can hang aroung a bronto and go kill some golems just for the lulz?

I give it props for atmosphere and the overall design of making the entire map a puzzle, but some elements were just confusing. I suppose I simply missed the notes or something... but what was the deal with the final boss? I know it was a construct, but what, why? And the ending number...

I don't even know what the point of the Harvester was supposed to be. I mean, one dwarf sacrificed to become a golem could be considered worth it given just how powerful they can be but...many dwarves slashed up into a Frankenstein-esque creature? And getting rid of the stone and steel that makes golems so formidable and replacing it with flesh? Not only would the golem be less durable but it's simply not practical to sacrifice that many dwarves in the creation of the flesh-golem. I know he was trying to save money but damn was that a stupid idea, even discounting the use of a Fade spirit to power it.

They move faster so that might be why they made them? Wasn't it suppose to be an "experiment"? Well obviously, it got out of hand. But yeah, having no armor makes them weaker. Is it just me or do they remind you of the Geth Hopper? I wonder if they will show up in DA2 or future DLC because leaving behind all those Harvesters doesn't seem like a good idea. lol

The darkspawn threat in Amaranthine is clear and present danger, basically an extension of the Blight.  Even my reluctant Warden princess consort was happy to go meet an actual threat to her nation.  But she would be another who would be dubious about rushing off to Orzammar to find a lost Deep Roads expedition.  Especially one that is trying to resurrect Caridin's research- which she went to a lot of trouble to bury.
