There does not seem to be a lot of data out there on the Ranger Summons, so I am trying to compile in one place some stats on the summons.  Let me know if I left out anything or if there is anything else you want to know.

First, on the PC summons do not steal XP.  I believe this is also true on the Consoles.  Second, on the PC you can summon one creature per Ranger.  On the console you can only summon one creature per party!  A big difference!

1.  Level of the Summons.
The level of your summons is entirely dependent on your characters level.  Without Master Ranger the summons level will be .75 * Your Level.  With Master Ranger the summomns level will be .90 * Your Level.  It is always rounded down.  So a level 20  Ranger will summon a Level 15 Wolf or a Level 18 Blight Wolf with Master Ranger.

2.  Stats of the Summons
There is no major difference between the Normal/Master level summons on stats.  So a level 14 Wolf will have almost identical stats to a level 14 Blight Wolf.

The level is the level of the summons, not the character!

Wolf/Blight Wolf

3.  Damage Calculation for your Summons
The damage for all of the Ranger Summons is calculated exactly the same.

Weapon: +3 It is always 3 regardless of the summon type
Level: +1 Point of Damage Per Level of the summons
Strength: (Strength - 10) * 1.25 * .625 Avg Attribute Mod

The actual value for the Attribute Mod is a random role between 50% and 75%.

4.  Buffs
Very few things buff your summons.  They do not benefit from any Flame, Frost or Telekinetic weapons.  They also do not benefit from Haste.  The icons will appear on the summons, but they will not get any bonus damage/speed.  They do benefit from Song of Courage, Rally/Motivate, Heroic Offense and Heroic Defense.

5.  Talents
Wolf

Howl
Cost: 15
Cooldown: 20
Gives a +5 attack to the Wolf and debuffs all enemies in a 5' radius by -5 Defense.  Lasts 10 seconds

Shred (Blight Wolf)
Cost: 40
Cooldown: 20
If the attack hits it converts to an auto critical.  If the target can bleed it will suffer the same damage again over 10 seconds.

Bear

Slam
Cost: 10
Cooldown: 20
If the attack hits it is converted to a critical.  THe target must make a Physical Resistance check or be knocked dow.

Rage
Cost: 5
Cooldown: 60
Buffs strength by 10 and debuffs defense by 15 on the Bear.  A questionable talent since the Bear already suffers from a horrible defense score.

Spider

Web
Cost: 10
Cooldown: 30
Paralyzes the target for 4 to 8 seconds.  Physical Resistance check.  Time for your Rogue to start backstabbing!

Poison Spit
Cost:
Cooldown:
Does (100 + Dex) * .5 Nature damage over 3 seconds.  Ranged attack.

What's their attack speed?

That is a tough one. The speeds are not always constant. Most seem to vary between two different values:

Wolf: 1.875. About in in three goes at 1.5

Bear: 2.1. About one in three goes at 1.8

Spider: 1.5. About one in three goes at 1.1

Overall the Spider seems to be the biggest damage dealer. The Bear looks strong with his huge health, but is horrible defense makes him very vulnerable. Rage on the Bear gives a little extra dmg, but with a huge -15 defense. So I would rate the summons as:

1. Spider - Paralysis Attack and Spit is Strong

2. Wolf - Fast Run Speed, Howl Debuff, Shred does good Dmg

3. Bear - A con tank with Low Armor. Slam is Good, Rage is horrible

Nice job on the data, BC
Let's see: Bad attack rates, bad defense, non-existent AC, and a bunch of Talents your party already has in abundance. Where do I sign up?

Spider is the suerior pet to use, alot dont use it cause they dont like its looks though.

It might be nice if there was a Mod that tweaked the Summons a bit to balence them out and cobined them with some of the Shapeshifter stuff. Like Bear and Spider with Shapeshifter and Wolf with Mabari. Also recently Amgorak made me think that it would be nice to have a racial pets mods that change teh pets to what a Human, Elf, Dwarf would have.

That's a great idea.
Whilst on the subject of summons (though slightly off-topic, sorry), is anyone aware of a mod that makes Dog a summon (without needing to spec ranger) instead of a full-blown party member? Preferably one that nerfs him so he has basically the same stats/abilities as the wolf summon (Game is easy enough as it is, don't wanna make myself TOO overpowered ;)).

@Random - Hah, when I was posting those numbers I *knew* you where going to say something. Yeah, they are not awesome. Still not bad for 50 Stamina. What do you expect.

And spider is the best Summon. Spit and Web are very good. Attack is decent, defense is decent. Not going to compare to a Min/Maxed character - but who cares? They die, they die.

True enough, it would be nice to see them with Overwhelm on the upgraded wolf , bear and spider though like the Shapeshifters have.

Wolf has overwhelm and dread howl etc., but they're not supposed to. When you summon it, quickly hit the tactics message that pops up and you can set the wolf to overwhelm your target or whatever.

Combat tactics mod (which is pretty much essential imo) fixes that oversight though :(

Although for a ranger, it could be worth playing without combat tactics and doing more micro-managing in order to get the extra wolf abilities.

^^ It is *hard* resisting that "Tactics have been added" message. It is so easy to go add: Enemy Nearest: Overwhelm. Makes pets super strong.

If you are on the PC and enable the Script Debug Log the Summons accumulative damage gets posted there. It might be worth looking at to see how well the Summon performed in a given Zone.

It is hard indeed, personally I keep combat tactics installed and thus the temptation is removed. Admittedly my only ranger so far has been Leliana in the DLC, and Wotsisbollocks with the bronto in the new Golems DLC, but still.
Combat tactics is just far too good to not have, even for the sake of ranger pets. The extra tactics make all the difference. Group heal fitting into 1 tactic slot instead of needing to take up 2 or 3 "jump to" tactics slots is gold. Also, being able to set scattershot in tactics is great, hated that scattershot wasn't available in the vanilla tactics.
But anyway, I digess. Sorry, went a little off-topic there.

Look at the stats above. I posted the armor rating. It is very low.
