Ok, I'll bite:
When you played through ME2 how often did you use heavy weapons?
Basically never, other than trying them out once or twice. The only time I really recall using them is in the last boss battle. Had they been absent from the game entirely, I probably wouldn't have even noticed - it would actually have been better, even, since I wouldn't have to stare at the damn thing all day, and it wouldn't be interrupting my weapon switching all the time.
When were heavy weapons most useful? What did you use them for?
Only on the end boss when killing him quickly was a good idea. Otherwise, they were basically just decoration. I think I played around with them a bit, but they weren't really any more effective than standard tactics - faster, yes, but not better. The one conceivable place where they would be useful is in a situation where speed is of the essence, or where the player is out-of-depth. The first happens only a few times, and the second really depends on squad choice.
What was your favorite heavy weapon?
They were all fairly useless. The only one worth anything was probably the collector beam, since it actually had a semblance of ammo capacity. Function is God, so I'd have to go with that one.
What would have made heavy weapons more useful.
Ammo. There is no guarantee of HW ammo, and you are essentially shooting away money when you use the things; it is incredibly wasteful to use HWs at all unless you can't proceed without them. There is literally no reason other than petty spite or incompetence that you wouldn't be able to restock heavy ammo on the ship.
If you could change one thing about heavy weapons in ME3 what would that be?
Honestly, they aren't needed; they added basically nothing to the game - not even to the shooter aspect that seems to be what the game was built to do. They were too powerful to actually allow them enough ammo to be useful, and there was no guarantee of ammo so using them would be wasting a limited resource. Obviously you can't simply be rid of them in ME3, but they need to be reworked to make them useful as more than a novelty.
