I have freed Sten today and I didn't understand the "quest" a bit. Basically, I talked to Sten in a cage and then talked to the revered mother of Lothering without success in getting him released with Coercion II. So I went back to the cage, opened it and walked away with Sten. Just to be sure, I dropped by the revered mother and gave her a finger.

Did I miss someting? Was this supposed to be a quest?

Yes. You get a quest to free him. You can try talking to the Reverend Mother or you can lockpick. Voila.

Err, if you had Leliana with you the revered mother with trust her and give you the key to the cage. Leliana is in the tavern.

A very easy quest. I think.

And yes, it is a quest if you check your journal.

Sounds like a bug.

Well, I play a rogue so that explains opening of the cage. (For this reason, I didn't take Leilana, just dropped her in the camp.) I know it was in the Journal but ... I expected something more, perhaps tougher negotiation, doing a favour, night stealth action, anything.

"Release him."
"No."
"Release him and I will keep him for killing Darkspawn".
(evaluate: coercion)
"No."

I would expect such a dialogue when bartering a discount on a leather skull cap. Anyway, thank you all for ensuring me that I didn't miss anything interesting.

That's one of the options, picking the lock. It's not a bug, Maria.

Oh, heh, I was wondering how you could do it without resorting to threatening the revered mother, which is what I did. Morrigan seemed to like it though...

Yeah. I was unable to convince the revered mother to release him so I stuck Leliana in my party and came back to talk with the woman but still no dice. After agonizing over it for awhile and failing to reason how I was supposed to persuade this woman (I even tried killing all the bandits to prove I was a good person) I just had Leliana pick the lock and voila. I was surprised it was so easy.

With another character I discovered I was supposed to bring Leliana the first time I talked with the revered mother to get Sten released.

My Warrior was able to convince her, my Mage just threatened her and got the Key. Allistair was dumbstruck by it, Morrigan laughed.

He didn't say he picked the lock. He said he clicked on it and it opened.

I do have on observation to point out here: Donating the 30 silver to the Chantry at the start of the conversation will almost guarantee the coercion success. My warrior with coercion level 1 and a cunning of 14 managed to get Sten free when I gave the tithe, but my rogue with coercion level 2 and a cunning of 18 failed the check (incidentally, he didn't pay the tithe)! Co-incidence? I think not!

Yay! We're now taking to threatening Priests!

Just threaten the pretentious old crow and she'll give you the key. Being of a much lower IQ than my fellow primates I don't generally scrutinize certain precarious situations farther than, oh...say--"Lock no pick, old stupid woman have key, threaten stupid woman for key"--"Can haz cheeseburger????"

Your Rogue was just clearly not worthy of the respect that is due from a goodly Godly lady who serves the Maker in her unending diligence and humble servitude towards the meak and mild, or was it blessed are the cheesemakers...? Wish they'd given us the choice to kill the old bat. Maybe they did and I just missed it.

Ah, that might be it. Playing the Dwarf Commoner Origin, I didn't pay the tithe for the roleplaying reasons.
