So as always, the mage fits that bill. And so did the monk from bg2.
fast movement, deals a ton of damage with hand to hand, smite was always fun knocking people back like rag dolls and sending them flying back like they were struck by some demi god. Killing enemies did not give a flashy decapitation animation, but it often showed enemies get hit so hard that they burst into chunks of god knows what.
I want that feeling again. I can never truly enjoy a warrior or rogue because of that thing in the back of my mind telling me that so much of their power comes from some blade or whatever else.
A monk class, complete with similar back story for the next installment would be a welcome addition.

I can live without it here, though, since I can't imagine anyone going up against a dragon bare-handed!

Unarmed in DA definitely gets my vote, and my money if it comes down to being DLC.

Yes monks use weapons on earth, this is a game, not real life though. Monks can be imbued with added powers just as mages are, except more slanted towards the physical. To compensate, they would not do as well with weapons like a warrior would.
Nice trade off, and you get to use fists and kicks that deal blows close to what weapons do. Sounds good to me. It would not be enticing to everyone. Many people enjoy picking up metal sticks and swinging it at bad guys.

D&D got around this by postulating that magical "chi" powers gave the monk class more armour than normal clothing.
In our world, there was little-to-no unarmed fighting tradition in the Eurpoean Middle Ages (the age of swords bows and armour). Most of our planet's unarmed tradition comes from the East where there were considerations like scarcity of metal, social and legal restrictions against using armour and weapons, and religious teachings that placed a high importance on physical health and fitness. I don't see any of those factors in the fictional world that Bioware have created.

P.S. I know I am over-generalising here.
P.P.S. Would an Arcane Warrior who uses spells like Rock Armour come close to the archetype you want?

Given how common metal armour seems to be, I suspect there is no lore basis for an unarmed combatant. Someone with fists and clothing is going to get creamed by someone in metal armour using a sword.

Not really as the arcane warrior still needs weapons to do real damage, like other lesser creatures (warriors-rogues) [I am really elitist]

I allways prefer monks in any given RPG game. If there isnt such a class, i usually settle with whatever comes the closest to it. In Dragon Age, Arcane Warrior is probably the closest thing to it.
In my recent Dragon Age game i made an Arcane Warrior elf , dual wielding whilst wearing robes. Mixed with supportive/Passive Spells and with high deffense score and insane passive damage output. It is a bit stale however, but it works just fine.
And that made me start thinking. Could that be made via the toolset?
Sadly, im not keen on the Dragon Age Toolset and i was wondering if the following could be done?
The concept:
class: Monk
Base class: Mage
Specialization: Arcane Warrior
Weapons: Staffs. (Implement melee staffs with the animation from the other two-handed weapons)
Stats: Magic (Attack Score), Dex (Deffense Score) & Mana Regeneration. (As the Arcane Warrior)
Abilities: Stuns, Haste, Minor Heal or Buffing Abilities, Picklocks, Stealth, Melee Damaging Abilities
Party Role: Stunner, Damage Dealer, Debuffer.
Lore: As far as I can recall there were a story about the first assassins was monks under the chantry. So background story to the class could be made and work in my openion.
Bare in mind this is just a start-out idea. Perhaps the people here itching to play a monk class. could narrow down something as an implemented class?
Allso - unless theres a really skilled toolset wizard out there - i doubt it would be easy to any sort of unarmed combat work, therefor i went the staff wielding route, in hopes it would be easier to make.

I prefer Silent Sister Monks. I was disappointed you fight one in the game and she comes wielding heavy platemail and a 2h sword. Despite being called a SS Monk... Great oversight there.
monks are no nessarly a group that fights in robes unarmed, this is more or less a dnd concept like clerics.
in reality monks were a group devoting there lives to a religon transfering holy texts and such and lived alone or with a group of other so called monksm were the idea they were martiel artists/spies cam from I have no idea.
in DAO it has more of a realistic tone, I unarmed martiel artist whould have no chance against a guy wearing full plate armor, training or not, since the concept of divine magic does not exist in dao lore (i.e andraste could have just been a mage that was over time worshipped as a prophet)
tangent aside could the developers/writers take liberty and make a specialization class like "spirit hands" or something (in the same way that they did with spirit warriors) yes, but as for a monk class nah, remember who is going to when a guy with fisti cuffs or someone decked out in plat armor with a 10 inch sword (this is just a random number lets avoid semantics here)

I'm sure there will be a monk class in Dragon age before long. It'll likely be in the next DLC.
I doubt you'll ever see it.
Bioware doesnt seem likely to add any fundamentally new "classes". Only new specializations. A monk would require a new base class, new animations, and an entirely new skillset. Bioware doesnt seem that motivated to produce fundamentally new content, when they can just make toolset adventures with the exsiting stuff and sell it for 40 bucks.

Again, people are going on about the hand to hand thing it would seem. Wouldnt it be easier to implement the usage of a staff as a melee weapon? which have been seen in lots of similar games.
Personally, I highly doubt that they will ever make the class/specialization but, couldnt such an idea get created through the Toolset?

and rogues fit ALLOT better than a mage, their skills are actual combat skills, mage skills are casting, generaly ranged but of cource there are battle mages and such, it just wouldnt look right to see a monk casting an arcane bolt, you might keep in mind that monks DONT USE MAGIC, atleast classicly they dont
Priests are the spiritual magical force, and in this game they are well embodied in the mages

It's a mod that uses one handed weapons and gives you a ball of energy in your off hand, it also adds new talents to use unarmed offhand strikes. I made a monkish character with it. Kept him in robes, picked up a bunch of the buff spells, namely haste and miasma, and some from the heal line, used paralyze as my main CC. HIghly recommend it, one of my favorite mods, it's hard for me to create a party without a "monk" in it now.

Not going to get too into it, but this is completely untrue -- the part about little to no unarmed fighting traditions in Medieval Europe. There are whole books devoted to it.
Anyway, Bioware stated literally years before the game was released that there would not be a Monk class. I believe they said it just doesn't fit with the setting. I'm pretty sure some fans are working on a mod that adds some new classes though, and Monk is one of them.
