I just installed Dragon's Age Origins for the first time, and am having a problem.  The installation went fine, and when I click on the icon on my screen, the opening screen appears. However when I click on "play" my monitor goes black, and I get a Windows error saying "Dragons Age has encountered a problem and needs to close".

A few people here have tried to help, but nothing has worked. My only option seems to contact EA technical support. I've looked all over their web page and can't locate a phone number. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could provide me with it. Thanks.

What graphics card are you running, what operating system are you running? If you can supply some technical information, that would help a lot.

I haven't seen a method to call EA for support either, it seems like they only accept emails. Since this doesn't seem to be a publisher issue (money transaction, DLC, DRM...etc.) I'm not sure how much they can help. BioWare, the developers of the game, might know more. Likewise, they don't seem to have telephone support.

On the plus side, within the last INSIDE pages of the game manuals, there is a section called "Technical Support Contact Info" that has a US telephone number, as well as a mailing address.

I've had the easiest and most effective help from EA by using the online chat. It's a pain in the ass to find, but if you can find it, use it. I've never tried the phone option and the email is too easy to miscommunicate. At least on the online chat too you can cut, paste, and provide screenshots. Go for that option.

I can never understand why so many people wear blinders / or don't use corrective lenses when they come here; the pinned thread is right there on top, clearly titled with its contents, and includes the LINKS that take you straight to where you need to go.  Now, admittedly, once you arrive on EA's Help Site, the navigation seems slightly awkward, but so very few of you will open your eyes!  (The correct stickie was in the seventh position from the top when I wrote, and has been bumped up to third now.)

As Gorath explained, the links you are looking for are detailled in the first post of the first thread in this forum.

As was also explained, the link chat is hard to find. Perhaps someone could provide a link if they have been there before?

Gratefully,

There is no direct link. You should go to Dragon Age Customer Support site, connect to your account, then choose Email Us to send a request/question.

Did that. They referred me here. They said they do technical support not "in game" support.

The game is now useless to me. Many here have had the same problem and there is yet no fix.

I appreciate your help nonetheless!

It's about the seventh one down (at least the one whose topic line clearly indicates its contents, and therefore should not have been skipped past), actually.

Official game support is supplied by Electronic Arts here

To get help with technical issues for the PC please visit Official Support and check their existing questions & answers or request help.

This forum is for fans of Dragon Age: Origins to assist each other with technical questions. We have an excellent and helpful community, but remember OIfficial game support is here.

I've bumped it up to the third position.

That doesn't make logical sense.  That tech's supervisor will need to offer a much better explanation of why regular game-playing END-USERS  such as us, in here, are the proper authorities for ANYTHING.

But what is your issue with Dragon Age?

It's the Velanna/Wending Wood bug. Velanna intially appeared twice in a row, repeating all the same dialogue, but will not appear from me at all when and where she should at the camp. Everything else that can be completed is done.

I tried the console command work around, to add her to my party, with no luck. All saves I have are after Velanna first appeared. I could go back again and redo the whole game, but it may just happen again.

I have read all of the posts regarding this bug and there is no patch, no work around. I was hoping Bioware had something for me, but I can't even get someone to respond to the issue.

Thanks,

PP

@JackM,

you are not grasping the problem. Bug reports are requests for help. Bioware directs all such requests to help.dragonage.com. All bug reports submitted on that site are redirected here. You see where this is going...

My issue is the same as everyone else's. The game is broken and we are trying to get support. There are bugs that we would like to see fixed, but Bioware and EA are playing hot potato with all support requests. All EA does at help.dragonage.com is pass the buck back to www.bioware.com. The problem is that there is no clear avenue for submitting bug reports. It is also possible that you (and EA) seem to think that bug reports and support requests are not the same thing. Given any lack of coherent communication with Bioware on these forums, we are forced (by the guidelines of the forums themselves) to submit all support requests to EA (help.dragonage.com) and these requests get sent back to bioware. It sounds like I've said this three times in this message, but that is exactly the feeling one gets when attempting to follow Bioware's own guidelines for seeking support for their game.

Do you get it now?

I perfectly understand. But, as stated in this forum description "This forum is for fans and owners of Dragon Age: Origins to assist each other with technical questions. ". So, we may try to help other users with issues.

First, what version of Catalyst drivers are you using?
Have you updated your version of DirectX with the latest version available here? Do not forget to select the language appropriate to your system.
Have you tried to uninstall your current version of PhysX and install the version supplied with DA:O?
Try also to disable DA:O intro movies (open game launcher, click Configure, select Video option and enable Disable Intro Movies option)
Finally, try to open Dragon Age launcher, select Confgure, change the Video settings (lower resolution, graphics detail, texture detail, set aa off, disable Frame-Buffer Effects) and try to launch the game.

I wouldn't rely too heavily on EA technical support. I've contacted them five times already about various issues and the only time they actually helped was once. The other time their 'fix' worked fragged all my unofficial DLC and achievements.
